Chapter 12: The Mistress of The Montagu Mansion
Matthew's response was bound to let her down.
"No need, we're getting a divorce soon."
Linda's brow furrowed. "What? I thought you really liked her."
Before she could say more, Victoria, who had overheard everything, exploded.
Her usually smiling face turned furious in an instant.
"Matthew, you little rascal! Get in here!" she yelled.
Worried about her health, Mary quickly patted her back to calm her down.
Matthew and Linda walked in.
"Mom," Linda greeted.
"Grandma," Matthew echoed.
"Matthew! Isn't Mary good enough for you? Why do you want a divorce? Are you trying to drive me crazy?"
Matthew shook his head. "Grandma, this is between Mary and me..."
But before he could finish, Victoria started crying.
"Why is my life so hard! My wonderful, beautiful, and kind granddaughter-in-law, and Matthew wants to divorce her. I won't have my wonderful granddaughter-in-law anymore..."
The change was too sudden.
No one expected Victoria, who had always been so elegant and composed, to start acting up after getting dementia!
Mary had never seen such a scene before and was so shocked that her hand froze mid-air.
"Mom, calm down. Matthew was just joking. He won't divorce Mary, right?" Linda quickly tried to ease the situation, nudging Matthew with her elbow.
Matthew glanced at Mary and sighed, "Right, Grandma, we won't divorce. Mary and I will stay with you for the rest of our lives."
"That's more like it!" Victoria smiled through her tears, happily pulling Mary and Matthew's hands together.
"Then bring Mary back to The Montagu Mansion for a meal, let her get familiar with the place. From now on, she will be the lady of The Montagu Mansion."
Matthew frowned at her words.
Bringing her back to The Montagu Mansion? No way.
He had originally intended to just placate Victoria for the time being.
Seeing his silence, Victoria feared he was about to back out, and tears began to well up in her eyes again.
Matthew quickly agreed, "Okay, we'll go."
Victoria immediately got excited and wanted to get up right then.
"Alright, let's go home tonight and have dinner!"
Matthew and Linda quickly stopped her, and Mary also persuaded, "Grandma, it's too late today. Look, it's already dark, and we've missed dinner. How about this, I'll go for dinner whenever you get discharged, okay?"
Hearing this, Victoria smiled happily, "It's settled then. I'll get discharged tomorrow! I can't stand staying in this hospital!"
Having persuaded Victoria, the three of them had no reason to object and said in unison, "Alright, we'll do as you say."
After finally calming Victoria down, it was already late.
Mary and Matthew left the hospital one after the other.
Matthew said, "You don't have to take Grandma's words seriously. Just say you have something to do and can't go. After all, we're getting a divorce, there's no need to get involved any further."
The coldness in his voice felt like a stab to Mary's heart.
She smiled self-deprecatingly, "I can't bring myself to deceive Grandma."
Matthew suddenly grabbed her wrist, "Mary, you really want to use Grandma to stay by my side."
Mary shook off his hand, "Say whatever you want."
With that, her taxi arrived. She opened the door and got in. Just as she was about to close the door, the next moment, the door was firmly held open.
Matthew's handsome face was very grim.
"If you really want to go, fine. But if you embarrass yourself at The Montagu Mansion, don't blame me."
Mary pried his hand off, ignoring his words.
Matthew then said, "Dress up tomorrow, I'll pick you up in the evening."
