Chapter 10: Misunderstanding

At the hospital.

Mary tagged along with Victoria for a full check-up and was relieved to find out it was just a minor bone fracture.

However, given Victoria's age, the doctor still recommended she stay in the hospital for observation.

Victoria, however, was super stubborn, clutching Mary's hand with a look of reluctance.

"I don't wanna stay here. It's too noisy with all the hustle and bustle. I'd rather go home. You're my granddaughter-in-law, you can take care of me."

Mary felt a bit helpless. "Ma'am, I'm just passing by, I'm really not your granddaughter-in-law. Your family will be here soon."

Victoria pouted. "You are my granddaughter-in-law! I recognize you!"

Mary decided to tease her. "That's because I have a common face, everyone thinks I look familiar."

"No, I've really seen you. You're in a photo with my grandson!"

Seeing that Mary didn't believe her, Victoria got more and more agitated.

Mary was worried she might get too excited and hurt herself again, so she quickly gave in and comforted her. "Yes, I'm your granddaughter-in-law. Just relax."

She helped her sit on the hospital bed. "Come on, sit down first. Are you thirsty? I'll get you some water."

Victoria finally calmed down. "I want apple juice."

Mary casually poured a glass of water and handed it to her. "The doctor said you need to drink plain water."

Luckily, Victoria was only stubborn about Mary being her granddaughter-in-law and didn't insist on the apple juice.

She took the glass of water, put it down, and then held Mary's hand.

"Why haven't you come to see me for so long?" she continued, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. "You don't know how much I miss you, how much I want to see you."

She sniffled pitifully as she spoke.

Mary felt her heart melt at Victoria's words.

Just as she was about to speak, the door to the ward opened from the outside.

Mary turned around and found herself face to face with Matthew, who had rushed in.

"What are you doing here?"

They spoke at the same time.

The next second, Matthew's brows furrowed even more, and his gaze became much sharper.

Victoria, on the other hand, didn't notice the tension between the two.

She pretended to be willful and huffed.

"Matthew, you rascal, you finally came! Look who this is. You usually hide her from me..."

Matthew knew that Victoria was having one of her episodes again.

He helplessly pinched the bridge of his nose and walked to the bedside, changing the subject. "Grandma, why did you run off by yourself again?"

Victoria didn't answer his question but took his hand.

She spoke earnestly, "Matthew, you need to treat your wife well, you understand? Look at you, since you came in, you haven't even greeted my good granddaughter-in-law properly. As a man of the Montagu family, you must cherish your wife, understand?"

Matthew realized that having a normal conversation with Victoria was impossible at the moment.

He took a deep breath and smiled at Victoria. "Grandma, you rest for a bit. I have something to say to your..."

He glanced at Mary and continued, "Granddaughter-in-law."

Victoria was naturally pleased to see them getting along and nodded eagerly. "That's wonderful!"

Matthew grabbed Mary's wrist and forcefully pulled her to the corner of the stairs.

Mary winced in pain and frowned as she shook off his hand.

The next second, she heard Matthew's voice, tight with anger.

"Mary, to avoid divorce, you even resort to this, using an elderly woman with dementia. Don't you think you're being too sinister?"
