Chapter 75 Discovery and Evidence

Chapter 75 Discovery and Evidence

The door opens. Her early life bedroom. Frozen in time.

Some diminished wallpaper. Same damaged window latch. Same stain on the carpet in which she had bled.

Gerald sits on the bed. Her mattress. Where nightmares happened.

He is elderly. Thinner. Hair grayer. Face more coated.

But his eyes. Still bloodless. Still calculating. Still merciless.

"You got here," he says. "I questioned if you would."

She stays close to the door. Hand close to the panic button.

"Say what you want to mention," She responds. "Then turn yourself in."

He laughs. Sharp. Sour. acquainted.

"So righteous now," he says. "You were always strong."

"No," she admits. "You made sure of that."

Davis's voice in her earpiece: "Hold him, speak to me. We are recording everything."

\---

"Your mother," Gerald says, voice hardening. "Elisa. She seduced me. Trapped me with pregnancy. Made my existence hell."

"She was never pregnant with your child," Zephyra says. "I am not your biological daughter."

His expression sparkles. Then reforms.

"Doesn't matter," he dismisses. "She made me trust you had been. Trapped me into marriage."

"You chose to marry her," Zephyra counters.

"I was to be manipulated," he insists. "By her, by Verona, by everyone.

The fable is complete. He believes his own lies.

"You abused a baby," Zephyra says flatly.

"I disciplined you," he corrects. "Your mom changed into someone too vulnerable. Too smooth. Someone had to train you in power."

He stands. Walks to the window.

"She became weak," he repeats. "Useless. Constantly protective of you instead of obeying me, always choosing you over everything."

Zephyra sees her the opportunity.

"Did you kill her?" she asks. Direct. Clean. "Did you kill my mother?"

Silence. Heavy. Thick. Damning.

Gerald turns. Search her face.

"Verona organized it," he finally says. "The twist of fate. The timing. The vicinity."

"But you wanted it," Zephyra presses.

"Sure," an easy admission. No hesitation. "She was threatening to leave. To take you. To expose everything. She chose wrong. So I made her gone."

The confession is clear. Recorded. Plain.

In her earpiece, Davis whispers, "We've got it. Signal when ready."

"Why?" she asks. "Since you hated us, why not allow us to go?"

"Due to the fact you had been mine," Gerald says. "Both of you. My assets. My property: "No one leaves me."

\---

A bizarre calm washes over Zephyra. Years of questioning.

Now she knows.

"You're a monster," she says quietly. "You destroyed my mom. Tortured me. Ruined lives because you couldn't accept that human beings aren't possessions."

"I'm practical," he counters.

"And now everyone is aware of it." She continues. "This is being recorded, Gerald. Police are listening. You just confessed to conspiracy to commit murder."

His face adjustments. Consciousness dawning.

The calculated calm shatters.

"What?" He reaches for his pocket. Pulls out a signal jammer. Sees it is off.

"You tricked me," he says. Rage replacing calculation.

"You trapped yourself," she corrects. "With your own arrogance."

His face contorts. Everything unraveling.

"You believe you have won?" he snarls. "You think this is over?"

He stands suddenly. Too fast. Extra agile than anticipated.

"If I'm going down," he says, moving closer to her. "You are coming with me."

Zephyra reaches for the panic button. But he is faster.

He lunges. Grabs her arm.

She attempts to run; However, he yanks her again. Hard. Violent.

"Let me go!" she screams.

The door explodes inward. Police. FBI. Armed.

"FREEZE! HANDS IN WHICH WE CAN SEE THEM! "

However, Gerald would not freeze. From his jacket, he produces a knife.

Small. Sharp. Pressed against to her throat before everyone can react.

"Go back!" he screams. "All of you! Back down, or I cut her!"

Zephyra feels the blade. Cold. Sharp. Drawing blood.

"Gerald, let her go," Davis says flippantly. Gun raised. "This simply ends one way."

"Worse?" Gerald laughs. Unhinged. "You have taken everything."

Through the doorway, Zephyra sees Kairo. Being held back by the officers.

"LET HER GO!" he screams. "PLEASE!"

"Kairo," Gerald says. "Your valuable spouse, wants to see her bleed?"

The knife presses tougher. Warmth trickles down her neck.

"I will do it," Gerald says. "Right now. In front of all of you."

"Think about this," Davis says. "You let her go, you stay. Maybe you face trial."

"There's no chance," Gerald says. "I just confessed to murder. I am finished."

Gerald's grip tightens. Knife digging deeper.

"Because she's all I have left," he says. "The last thing I can manipulate."

Zephyra's vision blurs. Blood loss. Fear. Adrenaline.

She sees Kairo. Tears streaming. Sees Davis calculating angles. Sees agent positioned.

All watching and waiting for the moment.

"Dad," she says quietly. Using that word deliberately. "You win. You eventually broke me. Is that enough?"

He pauses. Confusion crossed his face.

"What?"

"You wanted me broken," she says. "Destroyed. And you did it. Right now, I am terrified. Helpless. Exactly the way you wanted me."

His grip loosens. Simply barely. "You're lying."

"I am not," she says. "You are more potent. You are prevailing. You've got the knife. The manipulation. The whole thing you wanted."

She feels his hesitation. His need to trust.

"Allow me to go," she whispers. "And you will always know you broke me one last time. That I begged."

The knife wavers. His grip weakens.

"You're saying I won?" he asks.

"You won," she says. "You always win.”

The knife lowers. Just an inch. Simply enough.

"NOW!" Davis shouts.

Everything explodes. Agents rush ahead. Gerald's arm is grabbed. The knife flies away.

Zephyra is pulled to safety. Strong hands. A couple of officers.

Gerald screams, fighting. Thrashing. However, he is crushed.

"YOU LIED!" he shouts.

Zephyra does not look again. Simply runs.

Into the hallway. Into Kairo's palms.

"I've got you," he says. "You are safe."

Behind them, Gerald is subdued. Handcuffed. Reads his rights.

"Gerald Lione, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, assault with a deadly weapon..."

His screams fade a
s they take him away.

Paramedics rush to Zephyra. Treating her neck wound. Shallow. Non-lethal.

And as she stands in Kairo's hands whilst Gerald is loaded into a police van finally, defeated, one truth crystallizes—she survived by becoming exactly what Gerald could never understand: stronger than his cruelty, braver than his threats, and free in ways he'll never comprehend.
