Chapter 68 New Parents Under Siege
Three days at the secret hospital. Peaceful. Healing. Bonding without threats.
No flowers arrive. No calls. No Gerald. Just family and twins.
Adrian nurses well. Growing stronger. Isabella still struggles but improving.
Zephyra heals physically. Emotionally still raw from the violation.
But discharge day arrives. Time to go home.
Home. Where the address is public record. Where Gerald can find them.
"Security has transformed the estate," Kairo assures her. "New protocols. More guards. Fortress level protection."
She nods. Wants to believe. Has to believe.
They pack carefully. Twins in carriers. Gifts from well-wishers. Including teddy bear from first hospital.
Large. Soft. Brown. Innocent looking.
Adrian's already attached to it. Calm when near it.
They bring it home.
\---
The gates open. Estate appears. Beautiful. Secure. Surrounded by guards.
But at the entrance. Waiting.
Massive flower arrangement. Professional. Expensive. Elaborate.
Security already checked it. No threats. No devices. Just flowers.
The card makes Zephyra's blood run cold.
"Welcome home, daughter. Welcome home, grandchildren. Family reunited at last. -Father"
She vomits in the car. Immediately. Violently.
"How does he know we're home today?" she gasps between heaves.
"Discharge is standard three days after twin birth," Kairo says grimly. "He calculated. Sent flowers timed to arrive today."
"Get them out," Zephyra says. "Now. I can't see them."
Security removes the arrangement. Takes it away. Burns it.
But the message is clear. Gerald is watching. Waiting. Knowing.
\---
Inside. The nursery is ready. Perfect. Safe.
Two cribs. Soft blankets. Monitoring equipment. Security cameras in every corner.
They settle the twins. Both sleeping peacefully after the car ride.
Zephyra tries to relax. Can't. Every sound makes her jump.
Kairo stays close. Protective. Watchful.
"We're safe here," he keeps saying. "Look at the security. He can't get in."
She wants to believe him. Tries to.
\---
Evening falls. First night home. Should be magical.
Instead. Exhausting. Terrifying. Overwhelming.
Adrian wakes crying. Hungry. Loud.
Zephyra feeds him. Exhausted. Hypervigilant.
Isabella wakes. Also hungry. Always hungry.
Kairo takes her. Bottle ready. Learning. Trying.
Two babies. Two parents. Constant needs.
But also beautiful. Their family. Their home. Their life.
Then. Her phone rings. Business line. She needs it for her company.
Unknown number. She answers carefully.
Heavy breathing. Then Gerald's voice. Soft. Gentle. Manipulative.
"Zephyra, sweetheart. I just want to talk. To apologize. To make amends."
She hangs up immediately. Hands shaking.
It rings again. Different number. She doesn't answer.
Voicemail comes. She listens. Against better judgment. Needing to know.
"I've changed, Zephyra. Prison transformed me. I found God. Found redemption. I just want to meet my grandchildren. Just once. Please."
Delete. But the words linger. Poisonous. Insidious.
More calls throughout the evening. More numbers. More voicemails.
All the same. Gentle. Apologetic. Claiming transformation.
"Let me make things right. Let me be the grandfather they deserve. I've changed. I promise."
\---
Kairo calls police. Reports everything.
"We can't arrest him for phone calls," the officer says. Frustrated. Sympathetic. "Different numbers. No direct threats. Technically he's just... talking."
"What about the cameras in the hospital?" Kairo demands.
"Morrison's testimony helps, but we need to serve Gerald the restraining order first. We're searching for him but he's not at any known addresses."
Legal limbo. Trapped. Helpless while Gerald circles from shadows.
\---
Three AM. Both twins wake. Hungry. Demanding.
Zephyra nurses Adrian. Exhausted. Numb.
Kairo bottles Isabella. Clumsy but trying. Learning.
Zephyra starts crying. Quietly. Trying not to wake the babies more.
"I wanted this to be happy time," she whispers. "First days with our children. Should be joy. Not fear."
Kairo holds her carefully. One arm around her. Isabella in the other.
"They have happy parents," he says gently. "Vigilant, yes. But look."
He gestures to the twins. Fed. Safe. Sleeping peacefully.
"They're loved. Protected. That's what matters. They don't know the fear. They only know us. Our love."
She wants to believe him. Tries to focus on their faces. Perfect. Innocent.
"We're doing this," she says. Voice steadying slightly.
"We're surviving this," Kairo corrects. "And soon, we'll be thriving."
\---
Four AM. Finally both babies sleep. Blessed silence.
Zephyra and Kairo collapse into bed. Still dressed. Too exhausted to care.
Then. Static from the nursery monitor.
Kairo's eyes open immediately. Alert.
White noise. Interference. Could be normal.
But then. A voice. Through the static. Singing.
Male voice. Familiar. Horrifying.
"Hush little baby, don't say a word..."
Gerald's voice. Clear. Close. Inside their home.
Kairo bolts upright. Races to the nursery.
Zephyra follows. Heart pounding. Terrified.
He bursts through the door. Twins sleeping. Room empty.
But the voice continues from somewhere. Near the cribs.
"Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird..."
He scans frantically. Where? Where is it?
The voice emanates from near Adrian's crib. The teddy bear. Large. Soft. Innocent.
The one from the first hospital. Brought home with them.
"And if that mockingbird won't sing..."
He grabs it. Rips it open. Stuffing explodes everywhere.
Inside. A recording device. Small. Professional. Broadcasting.
Gerald has been listening. To everything. Every cry. Every word. Every moment.
Since they brought it home from the compromised hospital.
The lullaby continues playing. Pre-recorded. Message devastatingly clear.
"I'm here. I'm watching. I'm waiting. You brought me into your home."
Kairo crushes the device. Blessed silence finally falls.
But the damage is done.
\---
Security arrives within minutes. Emergency sweep of the entire nursery.
They find no other devices. Just the teddy bear.
"He planted it at the first hospital," the security chief says. "Knew you'd bring it home. Trojan horse."
They remove everything from the first hospital. Every gift. Every item. All potentially compromised.
The nursery stripped. Safe but empty.
Zephyra sits in the rocking chair. Holding both sleeping twins. Crying silently.
"He's everywhere," she whispers. "We brought him into their room. Into our home. I brought him to our babies."
Kairo kneels before her. Broken. Furious. Helpless.
"We didn't know," he says. "We couldn't have known."
"But he's been listening for three days," she says. Voice cracking. "Hearing everything. Every vulnerable moment. Every feeding. Every time we talked about being safe."
As dawn breaks over the estate while security continues searching and Zephyra holds her twins
in the violated nursery, one question screams—if Gerald could plant surveillance in a teddy bear they brought home themselves, what else has he hidden in plain sight, and will they find the next threat before it's too late?
