Chapter 59 Unexpected News

Chapter 59 Unexpected News

“Can she face her enemy’s interrogation without losing either the case or the child she's fought so tough to shield?

But first, the anatomy test. The deposition can wait one extra day.

They drove to the Doctor's workplace in silence.

Each of them is frightened. Both excited.

Kairo holds her hand. Tight. Anchoring.

"Whatever happens ," he says. "We face it together."

"Together." She echoes. But fear lingers.

"Zephyra Lione-Draven?" The nurse calls.

Zephyra lies on the table. Lifts her blouse. Exposes her growing belly.

The technician applies gel. Cold. Shocking.

"Let's have a look at what we've got here." She says. Professional. Focused.

The wand presses to Zephyra's stomach. Display screen flickers to life.

Grainy photos. Motion. Existence.

However, the technician is quiet. Too quiet.

Moving the wand carefully. Analyzing something. Frowning slightly.

Zephyra's anxiety spikes. Heart pounding.

"Is something wrong?" Her voice shakes.

The technician looks up. Expression unreadable.

"Nothing wrong," she says slowly. "Just... let me get the doctor."

She leaves. Fast.

Zephyra grabs Kairo's hand. Crushing it.

"What does that suggest?" She whispers.

"Stay calm," he says. "Do not panic ."

The wait feels countless.

Then the doctor enters. Reviews the display screen. Studies carefully.

"Well," she says ultimately, turning to face them. "This explains a few things."

"What explains what?" Zephyra can barely breathe.

The doctor turns the screen toward them. A huge smile on her face.

"Congratulations. You are having twins."

Silence. Complete. Absolute.

"What?" Zephyra's voice is faint.

"Twins." The doctor points on the display. "Two wholesome babies. See right here? Two heartbeats. Two perfect babies."

Zephyra stares. Not able to process.

There. On the screen. Two forms. Tiny humans. Two lives.

"Twins." Kairo's voice breaks. Then he laughs. Almost hysterically. "We are having twins."
Joy wars with terror. Double everything. Double responsibility. Double love.

"Early ultrasounds can omit multiples sometimes," The health practitioner explains. "But they're both right here. Each of them healthy. Both growing perfectly."

Zephyra starts crying. Crushed. Satisfied. Terrified.

"Do you need to know the sexes?" The doctor asks gently.

Zephyra looks at Kairo. He's crying too. Nodding.

"Sure," she manages. "Please."

The doctor studies the display. Adjusts angles. Focuses.

"This one is a boy." She factors to the first toddler.

A son. Their son.

"And this one is a female." She moves to the second one.

A daughter. Their daughter.

"One of each," the medical doctor smiles. "Fraternal twins. Boy and girl."

Zephyra can not communicate. Cannot breathe. Can only cry.

Kairo is sobbing. Kissing her hand. Her face. Her belly.

"Twins," he keeps announcing. "We're having twins."

In the vehicle later on, they take a seat inside the parking lot. Neither capable of driving yet.

Simply sitting. Looking at ultrasound snap shots. Processing.

"A boy and a girl," Zephyra whispers. "Our son and daughter."

"We are going to need a bigger nursery," Kairo says. Nonetheless shell-taken aback.

She laughs. Through tears.

He stops her with a kiss. Lengthy. Deep. Loving.

"We're going to figure it out," he promises. "Together."

"I am terrified," she admits.

"Me too," he laughs. "However, I am also excited. And glad. And so in love with you. With them. With our circle of relatives."

Pulling into the estate driveway, Zephyra notices another car.

Dalia's Mercedes.

They stroll inside. Living room voices. multiple human beings.

Not just Dalia. Percy is there. Elara too.

Dalia stands without delay. Sees their faces. Knows something happened.

"Tell me," she says lightly. "Boy or girl?"

Zephyra looks at Kairo. Both grinning.

"Both," they are saying simultaneously.

Confusion crosses Dalia's face. "Both?"

"We are having twins," Zephyra says. Voice breaking with pleasure. "One boy. One girl."

Silence. Absolute surprised silence.

Then chaos erupts.

Dalia screams. Rushes forward. Hugs them both. Crying. guffawing.

Percy jumps up. Shaking Kairo's hand. Speechless.

Elara wraps Zephyra in her palms. Sobbing with joy.

"Twins!" Dalia keeps announcing. " Grandbabies!"

They show the ultrasound photos. Everyone is crying. They are all celebrating.

However, Percy's telephone rings. He steps away. Answers.

His expression changes. Joy fading. Concern replacing it.

"That was the lawyer," he says quietly. "The judge ruled. Zephyra's deposition is scheduled. Day after tomorrow. No exceptions."

The celebration dims. Reality crashing back.

"Day after the next day?" Kairo's voice hardens. "She just found out she's carrying twins—"

"The judge doesn't care," Percy says. "Marcus's legal professionals pushed hard. Orders are final."

Zephyra touches her stomach. Two infants. Two lives. Depending on her.

"I'll do it," she says quietly. Firmly. "I do not have a choice."

"Zee—" Kairo starts.

"I'll do it," she repeats. "For the program. For Sara. For every lady who needs to understand, fighting back is possible.

She looks down at her stomach.

"And for them," she whispers. "So they are born into a world in which abusers don't win."

Dalia takes her hand. Squeezes. Proud. Worried.

"We will all be there," she says. "Assisting you."

Fear settles in. Deep. continual.

Two days until deposition. Two days to prepare.

That night, lying in bed, Kairo's palms rest on her stomach.

"Communicate to them," she whispers. "Our son and daughter."

He leans near. Speaks softly to her belly.

"Hi toddlers. Your dad right here. I just discovered there's two of you. We are scared. And excited. And so in love already."

He kisses her stomach gently.

"Your mother is the bravest individual I know, and she is about to do something very tough. To guard you. To protect others. So develop strong. Stay safe. And know you are already so cherished."

Zephyra cries. Silently. grateful. Terrified.

Babies. One deposition. The whole lot is at stake.

And as she falls asleep with Kairo's protective hands cradlin
g their twins, one question haunts her dreams—when she walks into that deposition room in forty-eight hours, will the stress of defending herself cost her the two precious lives she's just discovered?
