Chapter 45 Protective Instincts
Sara trembles in the chair.
Zephyra sees herself years ago. Trapped under Gerald's control. Helpless. Afraid.
The memory cuts like glass.
"Stay here." She tells Sara gently. "I'm calling my husband."
Kairo answers on the first ring.
"Zee? It's late. Everything okay?"
"No." Her voice is tight. "I need you at the studio. Now. It's urgent."
He hears the tone.
"On my way."
He arrives within twenty minutes. Finds Sara huddled on the couch. Zephyra beside her.
"This is Sara." Zephyra introduces. "She needs our help."
Kairo sits across from them. Listening mode activated.
Sara tells her story again. Haltingly. Painfully.
Marcus Lang. Rising designer. Powerful connections.
He hired her as an assistant. Promised mentorship. Opportunity.
Instead, he isolated her. Controlled her. Hurt her.
"If I quit, he'll blacklist me." Sara's voice breaks. "He has friends everywhere. Judges. Publications. Industry leaders."
"What kind of hurt?" Kairo's jaw clenches.
Sara pulls up her sleeves. Bruises. Dark. Recent.
"He threw fabric scissors at me." She whispers. "When I made a mistake. Said I was lucky it missed."
Zephyra's hands ball into fists. Rage burning.
"He threatens you?" Kairo asks carefully.
"Constantly." Sara nods. "Says no one will believe me. That I'm disposable. That he made me and he can destroy me."
The pattern is sickeningly familiar.
Isolation. Threats. Manipulation. Control.
Classic abuse playbook.
"We're calling our lawyer." Kairo stands. "Right now."
"Wait." Zephyra catches his arm. "We need to be careful."
"Careful?" His eyes flash. "She's being abused."
"And if we move too fast, he'll retaliate." Zephyra's voice is firm. "Destroy evidence. Intimidate witnesses. Bury everything."
They stare at each other. Different approaches. Same goal.
"We need to protect her first." Zephyra continues. "Then build the case. Methodically. Carefully."
Kairo's jaw works. He wants action. Immediate justice.
But he sees her point.
"Okay." He sits back down. "What do you suggest?"
"Document everything." Zephyra turns to Sara. "Do you have evidence? Emails? Texts? Voice messages?"
"Some." Sara pulls out her phone. Hands shaking. "I started recording recently. Just in case."
She plays a voice message. Marcus's voice. Cold. Threatening.
"If you breathe a word to anyone, I'll make sure you never work in fashion again. You're nothing without me. Remember that."
The audio makes Zephyra's skin crawl.
"Are there other victims?" Kairo asks.
"I think so." Sara nods. "He had assistants before me. They all quit suddenly. Never spoke about why."
"We found them." Zephyra decides. "Get their stories. Build a pattern."
They work through the night. Making calls. Gathering information.
Their lawyer arrives. Reviews everything. Takes notes.
""This makes sense." He says. "If we can locate other victims, we have a case."
"How long?" Kairo asks.
"Two weeks minimum." The attorney is honest. "Perhaps longer. tlThese stuff take time."
Sara appears terrified. "I have to go to work the following day. He'll detect something's wrong."
"No." Zephyra says firmly. "You're not going back."
"But—"
"You are staying with us." Zephyra's tone came off as no argument. "In this estate. Secure. Covered. Till that is over."
Sara's eyes fill with tears. "I cannot ask you to—"
"You are not asking." Kairo adds. "We are providing. You want safety. We've got enough space. It's achieved."
Sara breaks down. Sobbing with relief and gratitude.
Zephyra holds her. Like a sister. Like family.
The subsequent two weeks are brutal.
Zephyra works tirelessly. Tracking down Marcus's former assistants.
Three agree to speak. Their testimonies are chillingly comparable.
Harassment. Intimidation. Threats. Violence.
All too afraid to file. Too concerned about reputations.
Till now.
Zephyra documents the whole thing. Statistics interviews. Gathers proof.
She barely sleeps. Driven by determination.
Sara remains at the estate. Starting to heal. Beginning to hope.
One night, Zephyra works beyond midnight. Exhausted. overwhelmed.
Kairo saw her crying at her table.
"Howdy." He kneels beside her. "Speak to me."
"What if we can not stop him?" Her voice breaks. "What if she gets hurt more? What if we make it worse?"
"We won't." He pulls her near. "We are doing this right. Cautiously
"We won't." He pulls her close. "We're doing this right. Carefully. Safely."
"But what if—"
"Zee." He cups her face. "You understand what she's going through. That empathy is your power. That's why you can help her when others couldn't."
She cries against his shoulder. Years of her own trauma surfacing.
"Gerald did this to me." She whispers. "For so long. I felt trapped. Helpless. Broken."
"I know." He holds her tighter. "But you're not broken. You're here. Fighting. Protecting. That's strength."
She pulls back. Looks at him.
"I won't let Marcus do to her what Gerald did to me." Her voice hardens. "I won't."
"Then we stop him." Kairo says simply. "Together."
They return to work. Fueled by purpose.
Two weeks in, their case is solid.
Four victims. Documented evidence. Clear pattern of abuse.
Ready to file.
Then Zephyra's phone buzzes. Unknown number.
Text message. Short. Threatening.
"Back off or I destroy her career. And yours. I have connections you can't imagine."
Her blood runs cold.
Another message. Photo attached.
Sara leaving the estate. Timestamp from this morning.
He's been watching them.
Zephyra's hands shake. She shows Kairo.
His face goes dark. Dangerous.
"He's threatening us." His voice is deadly quiet.
Another message. This time to both their phones.
"I know what you're planning. Stop now. Or everyone suffers. Sara. Zephyra. Your precious company. I can destroy it all. Try me."
Zephyra stares at the screen. Fear and fury battling.
"He's trying to scare us." She says.
"It's working." Kairo admits. "He clearly has power. Resources. Willingness to hurt people."
"So what do we do?" She looks at him. "Back down? Let him win?"
Kairo's eyes meet hers. Steel in them.
"We're not backing down." His voice is absolute. "He wants war? We'll give him war."
"He could destroy us." She warns. "Our reputation. The company. Everything."
"Then we rebuild." Kairo takes her hand. "But we don't abandon Sara. We don't let predators win. Not again. Not ever."
She thinks of Gerald. Of Marcus Chen. Of every powerful man who thought he was untouchable.
"No." She agrees. Jaw set. "We're going to war."
They call their lawyer. Security team. PR specialists.
Prepare for battle. Whatever comes.
Sara enters the room. Sees their faces.
"What happened?" She asks quietly.
Zephyra shows her the messages. Sara goes pale.
"He knows." She whispers. "He's going to destroy all of us."
"Let him try." Zephyra's voice is steel. "We're not backing down."
"But you could lose everything." Sara's eyes fill with tears. "Your business. Your reputation. I'm not worth—"
"Stop." Kairo cuts her off. "You are worth it. Every person he hurts is worth it. This isn't about business. It's about what's right."
Sara cries. But this time, not from fear. From hope.
They spend the night strategizing. Planning.
Marcus has power. Connections. Resources.
But they have something stronger.
Truth. Evidence. And absolute determination.
The war begins tomorrow.
If Marcus Lang truly has connections powerful enough to dest
roy them, does taking him down mean risking everything they've built including the World Creator's League opportunity, and what happens when fighting for justice means choosing between protecting one victim and protecting their entire empire?
