Chapter 219 Don't Overthink
The winter sea was a dull grey, nothing much to look at.
The wind was light, the waves barely rising and falling, slapping against the beach half-heartedly, looking completely lazy.
Staring at it for too long made you feel lazy, too.
Rebecca took one glance and was ready to leave.
As she turned around, something caught the corner of her eye in the distance.
A tall, slender young woman stood in the sand, her camel-colored coat blending almost perfectly with the surroundings. You might miss her entirely unless you looked closely.
At that moment, the figure took one step, then another, about to step into the water.
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
If it were summer, maybe she just wanted to wade in the water.
But on such a cold day, who would wade in the water for no reason?
Was she going to jump into the sea?
The thought had barely formed when the woman took another step forward.
Rebecca's heart skipped a beat, and she turned and ran toward her.
"Hey, hey..."
As soon as she opened her mouth, it filled with wind and sand.
Before Rebecca could finish spitting out the sand, the woman stepped forward again. Her boots were already in the water—one small wave would be enough to soak her pants.
Having reached her, Rebecca grabbed the woman around the waist and dragged her backward.
The woman, snapping back to reality, seemed startled and struggled with punches and kicks. The two fell backward onto the beach.
Rebecca panted, "Whatever it is, there has to be a way to fix it. There’s always a solution. Please—don’t do anything you’ll regret..."
The woman froze.
She looked at the messy footprints by the water's edge.
Then, at Rebecca's panicked face in front of her.
Realizing belatedly that she'd been mistaken for trying to jump into the sea, the woman laughed, "Miss, thank you!"
Rebecca was stunned.
The woman stood up and brushed the sand off herself, extending her hand to Rebecca. "Hello, I'm Esme!"
"Hello, I'm Rebecca!"
Rebecca took Esme Watson’s hand and stood up, her face flushed with embarrassment. ‘Did I misunderstand? I’m sorry—I tried calling out to you, but you didn’t answer."
"Nothing to be sorry about. I should be thanking you!"
Esme smiled.
She had been spacing out, but looking at the footprints, if Rebecca hadn't come and pulled her back, she really would have walked into the sea.
Anyone would think she was trying to jump in.
Even if she wasn't jumping in, on such a cold day, getting her shoes, socks, and pants wet at Azure Water Bay, where it's hard to get a taxi, catching a cold and getting sick would be almost inevitable.
"As long as you're okay..."
Rebecca smiled, looking around. "Do you want to keep spacing out? If so, can I go over there?"
Esme shook her head. "Let's sit together for a bit."
Hearing Rebecca say she'd come to an exhibition and been kicked out, Esme looked incredulous. "What did you do?"
"Would you believe me if I said I didn't do anything?"
Rebecca spread her hands helplessly. "He said the piece was being displayed for the first time since it was designed, that absolutely no one outside his studio had seen it, but I’m certain I’ve seen something like it before."
Esme froze.
Rebecca was still muttering, "On some design website or forum, just a sketch."
Esme picked up where Rebecca left off, "So, that jewelry set is called Lovesickness?"
Looking at Esme's gloomy expression, Rebecca's heart stirred.
