Chapter 73 Chapter 73
They all perked up at me in unison. The guy who had been assigned to watch me got up, suddenly agile enough to move.
"What are you on about, pretty thing?" The third guy asked.
"Hey! Hey! You're not allowed to speak to her. And you to them. She's the boss's problem." The young guard bellowed.
"The same way you are the boss's problem, isn't it?" His mouth dropped open in surprise. Yeah, we know all about that, too, I smirked.
"Look, I've been here. I've heard a lot of things while you bunch was gone. Alexander is not planning on paying the agreed cut. In fact, he plans on using you for the job and taking you out afterwards."
The men exchanged glances with each other. "And why should we believe anything you say?" Stelkinsky asked.
I turned to look at the young guard, so dumb they were, and the foolish thing pulled out his weapon, which happened to be taken from him by Stellinsky's seasoned hands, right before he knocked him out.
"Go on," Stellinsky said, turning the gun on me. I raised both hands and backed away from the bars, not wanting to be shot.
"I heard Alexander and one of his men discussing. He plans to cause a rift between you three."
The three men who were disconnected exchanged looks of amusement. "And how does he plan on doing that?" The third guy asked.
"He said, he wants to pay none of you, or just one of you, and let the others fight over it. Now, that in my opinion only means one thing, either he knows there is one of you greedy enough to want to leave the other two stranded, or one of you has already agreed to be the one who gets paid."
The three men exchanged threatening looks at each other. The atmosphere became tense, and I had managed to sow the right amount of distaste in their mouth to cause them to turn against Alexander.
"Hey, guys, come on, she is just a Chiquita, why should we believe her? She works for Damien Paulo. We were hired by the opposite of Damien Paulo, and now she is trying to get smart." The third guy broke out laughing.
For a moment, I feared the others would buy his statement, and I would be exposed, but almost as soon as he opened his mouth, Stellinsky pulled out his gun and pointed it at him.
"Yo!" The third guy yelled out, while the second one reached for his own. "What are you fucking thinking, man? Put the gun down!"
"Put the gun down, Stellinsky." The second in command yelled.
"You put down the gun and shut the hell up! What are you, working with the traitor now?" Stellinsky questioned his second.
"What? Man, just cause I betrayed you once doesn't mean I'd be foolish enough to do it again! I love my life, man!" The third guy was caught in a muddle between the two men who held their guns, and he, who didn't even have a gun to begin with.
"I didn't carry a gun. Who plans to backstab a person and intentionally wishes to die?" He asked, hands raised, sweat perspiring over his face.
I looked from the three men to the unconscious guard on the floor. All I needed was to reach his key, and I would be able to free myself.
"Well, you have the ability to do foolish things, I'm going to split with the first pay. I think I'm done here." I heard the third guy say suddenly and a gun was cocked. Stellinsky definitely wasn't playing.
"Listen, how about we all calm down and think this through like mature people. I mean, there has to be something wrong with this story." The second in command turned a hard stare on me.
I gulped and moved back from where I had been hoping to reach the guard and take his key.
"Now, I don't have a problem with the leadership here, and neither has Billon here. He is a bit sneaky and greedy-eyed, but he has proven his respect and desire to remain with us."
"I say we split with the first cut. This isn't our deal after all. I always knew Alexander was a shady businessman,n and I knew that he would try to play us."
Stellinsky considered the suggestion for a minute before sheathing his gun back in with a nod. He tossed the third guy one of his weapons.
"Suit up, just in case those bastards have a say." They all turned out to file out of the room, but Stellinsky pucked up the young guard's body and leaned it against the cell bars, eying me closely as if reading my mind and knowing what I intended to do.
As soon as they were out, I reached down and searched his pockets for the key. First the right and then the left. I found it in a small pocket concealed at the back of his pants.
Fixing it into the keyhole, I happily got out, pulled him into the cell, and locked the doors. He needed the sleep more than I did anyway.
I made it out of the cell room and crept my way through the underground chambers, which echoed with the sounds of everything happening right above it.
I came to an exit ladder, but it led to the dining area of the house, so I continued walking just a bit further, searching for the tunnel I knew led outside the safe house. As soon as I was near it, I heard footsteps from far behind, making its way into the cell room.
"Shit! She's gone!" Somebody yelled. I rushed toward the exit ladder and climbed up, pushing the metal seal aside. I came out at a grassy clearing at the back of the safe house, a couple of miles outside.
Relief flooded me, and my body shook from the adrenaline rush. I couldn't believe my plan had actually worked.
I turned to make a run for it when I heard the sound of a gun cocking behind me. "Don't take another step."
