Chapter 5 The Invitation
He pointed at the cheque that was inside the document.
“That’s your money. Since you’ve already signed the divorce paper… you can have it.”
At that moment, Megan then look back at the check. She didn’t even bother to look at the amount again. Her fingers held it like it was trash, not something worth $100,000. She stretched out her arm and dropped it flat on Vincent’s chest. The paper crumpled slightly, but she didn’t care.
Her voice came out low and steady, but the anger in her eyes was loud and clear.
“I don’t need your money, Vincent,” she said.
Megan words made the entire room went silent again.
“Keep it. If you’re feeling so generous, then take it and use it to take care of your new wife,” she said coldly, nodding her head slightly in the direction of the bride.
She stepped back, not giving Vincent the chance to reply.
“I don’t need your money, because you will be needing it more then I do soon,” she repeated, firmer this time.
Without wasting anymore time Megan then turned around and just walked away calmly.
Her steps were slow but sure, and she didn’t look back even once.
The quietness in the hall remained. No one said a word.
But inside Vincent, a fire had started.
He stood frozen for a second, staring at the check in his hand like it was poison.
Immediately his jaw tightened. His fingers closed into a fist around the paper.
He was extremely angry. He never imagined that Megan would turn down the money.
Not Megan. Not the woman who once slept on a prison because of him. Not the woman he thought he had already broken.
He thought Megan would be so desperate… so broken by everything he had done to her… that even after the shame, the disrespect, the betrayal she would still take the money, and maybe even say thank you.
But the way she moved, the way she rejected it with no fear, no hesitation that cockiness, that calm boldness... Vincent had never seen this kind of version of Megan before.
He watched the door swing closed behind her and blinked, still in shock.
‘Could it be that prison actually changed her or something?’
He asked himself silently. But he didn’t want to admit it.
However, no matter what it was, he was just angry.
He hated that she rejected his money.
He hated the way she walked out strong, cold, and proud like she didn’t lose anything.
He hated that she had the last word.
But, no. He thought she would accept it. He thought he had her figured out, but he was wrong.
When Megan actually came out from the mansion, she was extremely angry.
Her steps were faster now. Her eyes burned, and her hands clenched at her sides. Her head was full of thoughts that stabbed like knives.
She couldn’t believe that fool. She had wasted five years. Five precious years. All because of that fool.
She bit her bottom lip so hard it almost bled.
But no. It would never end like this. She would never allow Vincent to go scot\-free.
She would make sure that Vincent remembers her. Not with love. Not with regret. But with fear.
For everything he said today, for everything he did, she was going to make his life more miserable than he could ever imagine.
At that moment, she brought out her phone and inserted her old sim card.
Immediately the SIM card received a network connection, Megan’s phone lit up in her hand.
Then, without warning buzz, buzz, buzz bank alerts started coming in, one after the other, like a rainstorm.
\[One hundred million dollars.\]
\[Five hundred million dollars.\]
\[Six hundred million dollars.\]
\[One billion dollars.\]
Her eyes were calm. The screen was glowing nonstop as her phone continued to vibrate, the numbers getting crazier with each new alert.
However Megan stood there, just busy staring at the numerous alerts that were entering all at once. Her hand trembled slightly. The amount of money showing on her screen wasn’t small it was enough to make anyone faint. But she didn’t faint. She just kept staring. Her lips slowly parted as her eyes followed each zero on the screen like it was spelling out her new beginning.
She didn’t even blink either.
Then, at that moment, right in the middle of all the buzzing and bank messages, a new message popped up.
It didn’t come from the bank. It looked different.
It came with a red urgent symbol.
And it carried weight, Seeing the urgency of the message, Megan decided to click on it. She swiped the alerts aside for a second, not caring how much was still flowing in. Something about that message disturbed her more than the money.
And then she saw the name.
Oliver.
Megan’s brows lifted.
