Chapter 77: The Final Countdown

The five days before the nationals final passed in a very tense but deliberate rhythm.

Zephyra woke up each morning with the weight of Elias’s warning pressing down on her chest, but she refused to let fear of so many things that might happen paralyze her. Instead, she channeled it into something else. Her mornings were for shifting practice in the backyard with Kaelric. She pushed herself further with each passing day. Now, she is able to hold a complete partial shifts for over an hour while moving through increasingly complex sequences. Her wolf felt fully integrated now, responsive and protective, rising smoothly when called upon and retreating when released.

Kaelric trained alongside her when he could, his own preparation intensifying. He studied footage of past dirty plays, and tried to come up with defensive responses with his most trusted teammates, and worked on maintaining calm focus even under pressure. Oberon had sent yet another surprisingly supportive message, warning him about Cassian’s ruthlessness without trying to dictate strategy.

Seraphina on the other hand, became a quiet force of logistics. She coordinated with Elias for additional discreet security around the stadium and the house, while maintaining her new job at the community center. The three of them ate dinner together every night, conversations a careful balance between normalcy and preparation.

On the third day, Zephyra and Kaelric drove to the overlook after training. The sky was clear, the air crisp with the promise of autumn. They sat on the hood of the car, her back against his chest, his arms wrapped around her waist.

“I keep imagining the final,” she said quietly. “Not just the game. I think about what they they want to do. What if they hurt you?" Her cracked up , one could hear the fear she had in her. " This isn't just a challenge, it's going to be violent.”

Kaelric’s hold tightened. “They can challenge all they want. As long as we are together, we will pull through. We have proved it time and again, this time it wouldn't be any different. " I know They’re just trying to grasp for the remaining ounce of power they have led because they’re losing power.”

Zephyra turned in his arms to face him. “I know. But I’m still scared for you.”

He cupped her face, gray eyes steady and fierce. “Then be scared with me babe. Don't be scared for me. We’ve survived worse than a rigged final. We survived each other at our worst.” He says leaning in slowly to kiss her on the lip. It's slow at first, then it grew deeper and , more urgent. The mate bond flared brightly between them, silver light visible even in daylight. When they finally pulled apart, breathing hard, Kaelric rested his forehead against hers.

“Whatever happens on that field,” he murmured, “I’m coming home to you. Every time.”

That night, their intimacy was intense and tender. They moved together with the knowledge that time was no longer infinite. Every touch, every kiss, every shared breath carried deeper meaning. The mate bond blazed around them, silver threads wrapping their bodies as they reaffirmed their choice again and again. Afterward, they lay tangled in the sheets, talking until the early hours of the morning. They talked about the future they wanted after nationals, about her training, about slowly building a relationship with Aldric on her terms.

The final two days were a careful dance of focus and rest.

Zephyra attended the last cheer practice with renewed purpose. The squad had grown supportive, and she moved through the routines with quiet confidence. Elowen stayed close, offering her usual bright loyalty and a promise to be in the stands cheering for both of them.

As finals was approaching, Kaleric preparations grew sharp and strategic. He met with his coach and a few key players, outlining contingency plans for potential interference. Oberon even attended one session, watching silently from the sidelines before offering a single piece of advice: “Play your game. Don’t let them dictate the rules.”

On the eve of the final, the house was quiet.

Zephyra and Kaelric lay in bed, the lights off, bodies pressed close. The pendant glowed softly between them.

“Tomorrow,” she whispered, tracing the lines of his jaw with her fingertips. “No matter what they throw at you… please come back to me.”

“Always,” he promised, voice rough with emotion. He kissed her deeply, rolling them so he hovered above her. Their lovemaking that night was slow, reverent, and fierce all at once it is a final reaffirmation before the storm. The mate bond burned brighter than ever, silver light filling the room as they moved together, hearts and bodies perfectly synchronized.

When they finally stilled, exhausted and wrapped tightly in each other, Kaelric pressed his lips to her forehead.

“I love you,” he said simply. “Not because fate chose us. Because I choose you. Every single day.”

Zephyra’s eyes stung with tears. “I love you too. My mate. My strength. And My home.”

Sleep came eventually, but it was light.

The next morning, as they prepared to leave for the stadium, another message came from Elias saying " The final starts in three hours. Victor and Cassian have brought in enforcers to disguised as spectators. They plan to challenge the bond publicly during the final play with silver weapons if necessary. Be ready. The Council is watching, but they may not intervene in time."

Zephyra met Kaelric’s eyes across the room.

The nationals final wasn’t just a game anymore.

It was the moment where everything they had built with their bond, their strength, their future would be tested in front of the entire pack world.

And this time, they would not fall.
