Chapter 65 Layers
Chapter 65 Layers
The house was quiet on Wednesday morning, the kind of quiet that wrapped around you like a well-worn blanket. Zephyra lay in bed longer than usual, staring at the ceiling where faint patterns of sunlight danced through the half-open curtains. The Lunar Crown pendant rested against her sternum, its weight is now familiar, in fact it is almost comforting. She traced its edges with her fingertips, feeling the engraved sigil press gently into her skin.
She didn’t get up right away. Instead, she let her mind drift into her memories, just allowing them to surface and settle again.
The parking lot where Thorne had ended things with a leaked photo of her mother.
The stage lights burning down on her as she fell during the rally, the laughter that followed like broken glass.
The hotel hallway, blurry with alcohol, the wrong room number, the solid chest she had fallen into.
The kitchen sink where she had first proposed the fake relationship, voice shaking with desperation and defiance.
The Assembly Hall and the power exploding from her, Kaelric on one knee, the bond thread blazing between them for the entire world to see.
The letter from Aldric, and his handwriting which seem to be trembling with old wounds.
All of it felt like layers of sediment that had slowly been shifting inside her. Some layers were painful. Others were protective. A few had started to feel like foundations.
A soft knock sounded on the door before it cracked open. Kaelric stepped inside, carrying two mugs of coffee. His black hair was still damp from a shower, and he wore a simple gray t-shirt that clung to his athletic frame. He set one mug on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed, studying her face.
“You’re thinking hard this morning,” he observed gently.
Zephyra sat up slowly, accepting the coffee with both hands. The warmth seeped into her palms. “Just… sitting with everything. The pendant. The letter. How different I feel even from last week.”
Kaelric nodded, not pushing. He sipped his own coffee, giving her space to continue if she wanted.
“I keep wondering what my life would have looked like if none of the suppression had happened,” she said after a while. “Would I have been the arrogant, popular girl like Aurelia? Would Thorne have noticed me for real instead of as part of a bet? Would my mother have had to strip to survive?” She paused, voice quieter. “Would I have ever stumbled into your hotel room?”
Kaelric set his mug down and reached for her free hand, threading their fingers together. “We can’t know. But I do know this for sure, the version of you that did go through all of that is the one I fell for. The one who proposed a crazy fake relationship to survive. The one who stood up in front of an entire Assembly and chose me even when it could have destroyed everything. That version is strong in ways a sheltered alpha heir might never have needed to be.”
Zephyra squeezed his hand, the mate bond pulsing warmly between them. “You’re really good at saying the right thing lately.” She said beaming brightly
He gave her a small, crooked smile in return. The one that used to carry mockery but now only held affection. “I’ve had a lot of practice trying to make up for all the wrong things I said in the beginning.”
They stayed in bed for nearly an hour, drinking coffee and talking in low voices. No agenda. No rush to get to school or training. Just the two of them, existing in the soft morning light.
Eventually they went downstairs. Seraphina had already left for work, leaving a note on the kitchen counter wishing them a good day and mentioning she’d be home late. The house felt even more theirs now , and the last traces of the blended family experiment fully cleared away.
Breakfast was simple and slow. Zephyra made toast while Kaelric scrambled eggs. They ate at the island, shoulders brushing, conversation drifting from school gossip Elowen had texted them to Kaelric’s upcoming nationals match and Zephyra’s next shifting session.
“I think I want to try holding a fuller partial shift tonight,” she said. “Not pushing for complete transformation yet. Just… seeing how long I can stay in it comfortably.”
Kaelric nodded. “I’ll be there. We can do it after dinner, when the light is soft. No pressure on timing or perfection.”
The drive to school was longer than necessary. Kaelric took the scenic route again, windows cracked to let in the cool air. His hand rested on her thigh most of the way, thumb moving in slow, absent circles. They didn’t fill the silence with constant talk. The mate bond did enough. It was a steady, reassuring presence that needed no words.
At school, the energy felt anticipatory but not overwhelming. Nationals fever was building, but it was focused rather than frantic. Elowen met them at the lockers, full of her usual bright energy.
“Cheer squad is doing one more casual run-through tomorrow,” she said. “You coming again? The girls really liked having you there last time.”
Zephyra smiled. “Yeah. I think I will.”
Classes passed in a gentle blur. In Professor Hilda’s session, they reviewed more theory on emotional regulation during shifts. Zephyra took detailed notes, feeling the knowledge sink in deeper each time. During lunch, the three of them sat outside, Elowen recounting a hilarious story from her morning class while Kaelric occasionally stole fries from Zephyra’s tray. Small, normal moments that felt newly precious.
After school, Zephyra went home while Kaelric attended a short strategy meeting. She used the quiet time to journal about the small sensations she had noticed during her shifting practices and how her claws felt, how her hearing layered sounds, how the mate bond seemed to steady the wolf when it stirred.
When Kaelric returned, they made dinner together , a simple roast chicken with vegetables. Seraphina arrived home midway through, looking tired but satisfied from her day at the community center. The three of them ate slowly, sharing pieces of their days without forcing connection. It felt natural now.
After dinner, as promised, they went to the backyard.
The moon was waxing, the air cool. Zephyra stood in the grass, pendant warm against her skin. Kaelric sat on the bench, watching with quiet support.
She took her time.
Breathing. Centering. Inviting.
The shift came gradually, layer by layer. Claws. Fur along her arms and neck. Ears shifting. Eyes brightening with silver-blue light. She even managed to partially shift her legs this time, feeling the power coil in her muscles without overwhelming her.
She held the form for nearly twenty-five minutes, moving through gentle stretches and balance exercises. The wolf felt present, alert, but cooperative. When she finally released it, she was tired but steady on her feet.
Kaelric was there immediately, wrapping her in his arms. “You’re getting stronger every time,” he murmured. “I could see the wolf looking out through your eyes tonight. It was calm and curious, exactly yours.”
They sat on the bench afterward for a long time. Zephyra described every sensation in detail while Kaelric listened, occasionally asking gentle questions. The conversation drifted from shifting to the upcoming nationals, to Seraphina’s new routine, to how the house felt different now that it was truly theirs again.
Eventually the talk slowed. They simply sat together, her head on his shoulder, his arm around her waist, watching the stars appear one by one.
“I don’t need everything to be resolved right now,” Zephyra said softly into the quiet. “The meeting with Aldric, full shifting, what the Crown means for my future… none of it has to happen immediately. I just want to keep moving like this. Slowly. Honestly.”
Kaelric pressed a kiss to her hair. “Then that’s exactly what we’ll do. One day, one shift, one conversation at a time.”
They stayed outside long after the air grew chilly, wrapped in each other and the steady rhythm they had built together. There’s no rush nor performance. Certainly, there’s no need to prove anything to the world or to themselves.
