“Don’t worry, sweetheart. Mom won’t ever leave you. My Ethan’s safe with me.‘
”
He truly was just a regular kid with so much insecurity. Maureen’s heart ached for him.
“Let’s go to bed, I’m sleepy.”
“Okay.”
“Mommy.”
“You go make the bed first, I’ll be up in a minute.”
“Alright.”
Maureen went upstairs to prepare the bedding. The moment she left, Ethan’s true nature surfaced as he smirked at Geoffrey. “Geoffrey, you’re still wet behind the ears trying to outsmart me.”
Just as Ethan turned to leave, Geoffrey’s long arm shot out and lifted him up midair.
Ethan instantly panicked.
“Uncle… Uncle Geoffrey, let’s talk this out properly. No need for roughhousing.”
Now Geoffrey understood–while Ethan seemed more sensitive than Jacob, the boy actually had
thicker skin.
“Repeat what you just said?”
Geoffrey’s voice turned icy.
Ethan swallowed his words, switching tactics: “I’ll start crying right now and tell Mommy you hit me. Who do you think matters more to her–you or her own son?”
Was that even a question?
Ethan obviously held the upper hand. Geoffrey set him down immediately.
Ethan realized Geoffrey genuinely feared upsetting Maureen–probably not an act.
So… did this deadbeat dad actually love Mommy?

That night, Ethan thought long and hard.

After Maureen fell asleep, he hugged her arm and whispered: “Mommy, I want you to be happy. If he truly loves you, I’ll accept him.”
“But if he’s still lying to you, I’ll kill him.”
Maureen knew nothing of Ethan’s thoughts. Had she known, she’d have counseled him earlier.
Ethan’s bones ached again. He rose quietly, kissed Maureen’s forehead, then drifted back to sleep.
Christmas Holidays approached. After finishing work, Maureen planned to buy clothes and shoes for both kids and Zoe.
Since Ethan and Zoe weren’t well enough for long shopping trips, Maureen took their measurements to shop alone.
Geoffrey stayed home that day: “Want me to come?”
“You can’t see, it’ll be difficult. I’ve asked Justin to drive and carry things,” Maureen replied.
Justin now served as her full–time bodyguard, accompanying her most days.
Though blind, Geoffrey’s memories had returned–including Justin’s handsome face. This displeased him, though he dared not show it.
“Leaving now?” Geoffrey pressed.
“Yeah.”
Maureen eyed him curiously: “What’s wrong?”
“I’ll have Wayne send you my measurements later.”
Geoffrey said reluctantly.
That meant he wanted Maureen to buy clothes for him too.
Actually, even if he hadn’t mentioned his measurements, Maureen would’ve remembered.
Before they married, Maureen had secretly measured his height and size, buying him piles of clothes.
She remembered his birthday and every detail by heart.

Even years later, his information surfaced in her mind whenever she thought about it.

But back then, he’d never cared about her efforts – tossing her gifts in trash or burning them.
When Maureen stayed silent, Geoffrey spoke again:
“I’m blind. Could you pick two outfits for me?”
Afraid she’d refuse, he added: “If it’s too much trouble, forget it. I’ve got old clothes.”
Ethan watched his scumbag dad’s pitiful act, sensing something sinister.
Maureen’s soft heart won out seeing Geoffrey amnesiac, blind and destitute, so she nodded.
“If my choices aren’t good, don’t complain.”
Geoffrey’s lips curved slightly: “I’d never complain.”
Maureen didn’t buy his sweet talk.
Back then, why had he complained so bitterly?
After saying goodbye to Ethan and Zoe, Maureen headed out with Justin.
Justin was driving when Maureen couldn’t help but ask, “Justin, has Gareth contacted you lately?”
After her call went unanswered days ago, Maureen couldn’t shake her worry that something might’ve happened to him.
Gareth had made plenty of enemies abroad, some rumored to be his own brothers.
“Nope. You need him for something?”
Justin asked.
Maureen shook her head: “Just haven’t reached him in ages. Worried he’s in trouble.”
Gareth often got hurt overseas, even went into shock once.
Justin narrowed his eyes: “Want me to look into it?”
“Okay.”
Hearing Justin could investigate, Maureen felt slightly calmer.
Somehow she sensed Gareth was in danger.

Justin hadn’t paid attention to Gareth’s allaits either, but now recalled someone recently tried bribing him to stay away from Maureen.
He wasn’t sure whether to tell Maureen.
Arriving at Small Town Mall.
Maureen got out to shop, Justin following her when he suddenly halted.
“Someone’s tailing us.

Hearing this, Maureen also stopped: “Geoffrey’s bodyguards?”
They weren’t far, and Maureen disliked being shadowed by a crowd–they shouldn’t have come.
“No. Unfamiliar faces. Let’s shop first.”
“Alright.”
Maureen always trusted Justin completely.
Gareth had said ordinary people stood no chance against Justin, even twenty–odd at once.
Justin had climbed out of piles of corpses.
Inside the mall.
Maureen picked clothes for the family. Kids‘ and elders‘ outfits were easy, but she hesitated at Geoffrey’s section.
His past clothes were pricey custom jobs, all monotonous black–and–white–utterly drab, not lively
