Chapter 55: Chapter 55

Kade

I lost it.

Watching her pretend to be interested in that weakling asshole was one thing but seeing her on top of him, seeing her kiss him was completely another.

I wanted to kill him, rip him apart with tooth and fang until my coat was sticky with his blood. I wanted to finish what I had started on the ice that had almost got me expelled and resulted in a beating from my father that even now weeks later I hadn’t recovered from.

Loving Elari, being her mate, was making me lose myself in ways I hated. I felt out of control all of the time. And this time was no different. My wolf tore its way out of my skin and we were running down into the valley. I needed time to myself before I really did do something to hurt someone.

So I ran and my heart fucking broke. And I told the whole fucking school just how much pain I was in because I couldn’t keep the howls locked in my throat.

I made my way quickly down to the little cave where I’d first kissed her and crawled inside. That’s where I lay. Curled up on my side and staring into nothing. I waited for the emptiness that used to fill me to come back but it didn’t.

The goddess had filled my soul with Elari. My damn sister. The one person in the entire world I couldn’t be with and she had chosen someone else.

Even now she could be betraying me, by kissing him. Maybe even doing other things with him. How was I meant to go through life knowing that?

Only she wasn’t betraying me, not really. Elari hadn’t asked for this anymore than I had.

Something soft and warm moved through my fur and I swung my head up and around. My teeth snapping at her face.

“Are you ok?” Elari crouched beside me, her small hand tangled in my fur. Instantly my teeth receded with my fur so I was a man again in seconds.

She didn’t move her hand away from my side until I sat upright.

“I didn’t hear you-“ I couldn’t help but glance down at where her soft hand was pressed against my skin. She followed my gaze downward and blushed at my nakedness. Usually being nude wouldn’t bother me but it clearly bothered her. I covered myself with my hands. “I didn’t hear you come down here? What do you want Lari?”

“I went to check on you at your dorm and no one had seen you. You missed your practice. I knew I’d probably find you down here.” She smiled sadly. “I wanted to make sure you were ok?”

I couldn’t help it. I glared at her. She wilted almost instantly. Her hand dropped to her side and I instantly missed the feel of her skin against mine.

“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have bothered you.” She turned to leave and I lashed out and caught her wrist to stop her.

“Why did you come down here, Elari?” I asked. “Why follow me to check on me when it’s clear you don’t care.”

“Of course I care ,Kade.” She snapped right back. “Why would you even say,” she trailed off as I gave a little tug on her arm and pulled her in closer. “Kade.” She whispered.

“Does your boyfriend know you care,Elari?” I flattened my hand on the small of her back and pulled her flush into my body. She gave a little whimper, that filled my heart with hope.

This close she couldn’t pretend that she didn’t want me. I could taste and smell the change in her scent, I could hear the way her heartbeat sped up. She could lie with her words but her body would always betray her.

“He’s not-“

I forced her into me with so much force she squeaked. “Don’t lie to me, Elari. I saw you.” My voice broke. “I saw you kiss him. Don’t deny it.”

Hands flat on my naked chest she pushed me away. Not that I let go of her completely. It was like I couldn’t. I needed to touch her, just hold her a little bit. Touching her skin made my wolf calmer.

Tilting her face up to me, her eyes shifted colour. It happened so quickly that I wasn’t sure if I’d seen it or if it was a trick of the light.

“I wasn’t going to deny it,Kade. I did kiss Rivan.”

I growled. My lips pulling back from my teeth, the sound echoed through the cave. “Stop reminding me.”

“He’s a great guy and he really cares about me.”

“Stop.” I ordered.

“This thing between us, it’s wrong. It’s-“

I didn’t let her finish. Pulling her back into my arms I kissed her. Not softly or gently. I put everything I was feeling into it and kept my hands on her body firm. But she kissed me back without a moments hesitation. Wrapping her arms around my throat and pulling herself onto her tip toes to kiss me back with just as much need as I was feeling.

“Nothing.” Swiping my tongue against her bottom lip I finally pulled away but just enough to rest my forehead against hers and sigh happily. “Nothing that feels this good or this right could be wrong, Lari.”

I could taste her mouth on my lips and wanted more so I kissed her again. This time she pulled away. “We can never be together. They won’t allow it. It’s against the rules.”

“Fuck the rules.” Desperately I tried to find her mouth with mine. “They can’t change a goddess' chosen bond. They wouldn’t dare.”

Elari pulled out of my arms completely, her fingers pressed to the lips I had just kissed. “You’re living in a fairytale Kade if you believe that. They won’t allow it. It’s better if we just-“

I growled again , my anger bubbling up. “If we just what? Reject the bond and see if it kills us? This isn’t Fate. It’s more than that. I won’t let you risk yourself by finding a way to reject me. We both know you wouldn’t survive it.”

I didn't mean for my words to come out like that. Her face darkened instantly. Anger tightened her features. “I’m not the weakling you think I am Kate.” She spat.

“I know. It’s just-“ I reached for her and she took a purposeful step backwards

“I can’t reject anyone until my wolf is here anyway.” She met my eyes unflinchingly . “But I will find a way.” She vowed. “Until then we need to stay away from each other. That means you need to stop following me around. People are starting to notice.”

“You mean your boyfriend is starting to notice?” I asked coldly.

She didn’t flinch as she met my eyes. “Yes.”

Rage engulfed me. My hands clenched into fists and the urge to shift and hurt someone was so overwhelming that I actually took a step towards her.

“So you admit it. He is your boyfriend.”

Elari didn’t look away. She met my eyes steadily. “Yes Kade, he’s my boyfriend.”

She said it clearly but I didn’t want to believe her: “you’re really seeing someone even though-“

“We can never be together.” She said again.

“I hate you.” The words ripped themselves out of my throat. “I fucking hate you Lari. You made me love you and then-“ my growls were coming too quick now. I was on the verge of losing control completely. And if I did I would hurt her.

Maybe she deserved that because she sure as hell had hurt me.

“Run Elari.” Lifting my face to the cavern ceiling and howled. “Fucking run, because tonight is the last time I protect you with love.”

Holding her hands out in front of her, she backed off. “What the hell does that mean, Kade you aren’t being reasonable.”

Throwing back my head I laughed. I knew I wasn’t being reasonable but there was nothing reasonable about the way I was feeling. I loved her with everything I had and she had rejected that love. If she didn’t want to be mine to love then she would be mine to hate.

And I would fucking ruin her.

I smiled at her cruelly. “Run little sister. Run now.”
