Chapter 55 The Banishment commuted
Three days after the weapons master's testimony, the council reconvened for final judgment. Lila stood before them wearing a simple gray dress, her back still bandaged beneath the fabric. The wounds from Adrian's whip were healing but would scar. Ten permanent marks proving what duty could force even mates to do to each other.
Adrian sat on his throne looking carved from ice. The past days had aged him. Gray streaked his temples that hadn't been there before. Lines carved deep around his mouth. He looked like a man carrying unbearable weight, which he was.
"This council has deliberated extensively." Councilor Thorne's voice carried through the packed chamber. "We've examined evidence. Questioned witnesses. Investigated every claim and counterclaim. And we've reached our conclusions regarding the death of Queen Celeste."
The room fell silent. Hundreds of people waiting to hear who would be punished for murder. Waiting for justice or failure, depending on their perspective.
"Regarding Lady Margot and Lord Garrett." Thorne continued. "The evidence is insufficient to prosecute. While circumstances are suspicious, reasonable doubt exists regarding their involvement in the Queen's death. Therefore, they are cleared of all charges."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some approving. Some outraged. Lila felt her hope crumble. She'd known this was coming but hearing it spoken made it real.
"However." Thorne raised his voice. "The evidence does suggest they manipulated circumstances surrounding the investigation. Gathered evidence in ways that may have crossed ethical boundaries. While not criminal, such behavior is inappropriate for members of this court. Therefore, Lady Margot and Lord Garrett are required to leave the palace for a period of six months. During that time, they may not hold court positions or participate in royal proceedings. They may return after six months if their conduct proves acceptable."
It was a slap on the wrist. Barely punishment at all. Six months away and then back to positions of power. No consequences for murder, just mild rebuke for manipulation.
Margot's face showed perfect regret. "We accept the council's wisdom, Your Grace. We'll withdraw from court immediately to reflect on our actions."
Garrett nodded his agreement, his expression appropriately solemn. Both of them playing their parts perfectly. Both of them knowing they'd won.
"Regarding Lady Lila Hartwell." Thorne turned his attention to her. "The evidence against her has been called into question by the letters Maya provided. While the authenticity of those letters remains disputed, they do create reasonable doubt about Lady Lila's guilt. Therefore, the council cannot in good conscience proceed with execution."
Relief flooded through Lila. Not execution. Not hanging. She'd live.
"However." Thorne's voice hardened. "Lady Lila cannot remain completely unpunished. She has been flogged, which the council accepts as partial payment for the suspicion against her. But she must face additional consequences. Therefore, we rule as follows: Lady Lila will remain confined to the palace. She may not leave the grounds without royal permission. She is stripped of all privileges previously granted. No formal positions. No attendance at court functions. No interaction with nobility beyond necessity. She will live here as a permanent resident but not as a member of court."
"A gilded cage." Lila said quietly.
"A compromise." Thorne corrected. "Between those who believe you're guilty and those who believe you're innocent. You keep your life. You lose your freedom."
"For how long?"
"Indefinitely. Until such time as new evidence proves your innocence beyond doubt, or until His Majesty grants you pardon." Thorne's expression softened slightly. "This is the best outcome we could reach, Lady Lila. Many on this council wanted harsher punishment. Many wanted you executed despite the doubt. This compromise keeps you alive."
Alive but imprisoned. Still, it was better than dead. Barely.
"Does the accused accept these terms?" Thorne asked formally.
What choice did she have? Refuse and face execution. Accept and live in permanent confinement. "I accept."
"Then this matter is concluded. Lady Lila will be escorted to her quarters and remain there under guard. Lady Margot and Lord Garrett will depart the palace by sunset today. This council is dismissed."
People filed out, some looking satisfied, others disappointed. Adrian remained on his throne, watching Lila with devastated eyes. Through the bond, she felt his helplessness. He'd fought for her but law had limitations even kings couldn't override.
Guards escorted Lila back to her chambers. The same rooms she'd lived in for three years. Now officially her prison instead of just feeling like one. The door locked behind her with terrible finality.
Maya arrived within the hour, her eyes red from crying. "I'm sorry, my lady. I thought the letters would save you completely. Not just. This."
"You saved my life." Lila pulled her into a hug, careful of her healing back. "I'm alive because of you. That matters more than freedom."
"But you're trapped here. Forever, maybe."
"Forever is a long time. Things change." Lila moved to her window, looking out at the palace grounds she could see but not access. "And at least I'm close to Adrian. Close to Theo. Close to everything that matters."
Through the window, she watched Margot and Garrett preparing to leave. Servants loaded their belongings into carriages. Nobles gathered to offer polite farewells. Both of them accepting exile gracefully, knowing it was temporary.
Margot looked up at Lila's window. Their eyes met across the distance. Margot's expression was triumphant. She'd murdered a queen, framed her rival, and escaped with minor punishment. She'd won.
As her carriage pulled away, Lila watched it disappear through the palace gates. Watched her sister's murderers leave unpunished. Watched justice fail completely.
But she was alive. Adrian was alive. The bond between them remained unbroken despite everything. That was something. Maybe enough.
That night, Adrian came to her window like he used to years ago. Climbed the tower wall despite everything being different now. Despite her confinement being official. Despite the whole court knowing about their bond.
"You shouldn't be here." Lila said as he climbed through. "You'll cause more scandal."
"Let them talk." Adrian pulled her carefully into his arms. "I'm done caring what people think. Done letting scandal and propriety control our lives."
They stood holding each other in the darkness. Two people bound by destiny but separated by everything else. Two people who'd survived murder accusations and floggings and trials but might not survive what came next.
"I'm trapped here." Lila whispered. "Confined forever unless you pardon me. Unless you publicly claim me as mate and face whatever consequences that brings."
"I know." Adrian's arms tightened. "And that's exactly what we need to discuss."
