Chapter 27 Chapter Twenty-Seven
“I’m not sure. Stay here.” I head down the hall. “Tiberius is everything okay?” Pushing the office door open slowly, I look around. His computer and several items off his desk are on the floor. “Tiberius?”
Walking behind the desk I see Tiberius lying on the floor unconscious. “Oh my god Tiberius. Tiberius wake up.” I shake him, checking for a pulse. He’s alive.
“Leilani call an ambulance now.” I yell, as I continue trying to wake Tiberius.
Leilani rushes into the office, with her phone in hand. “Dad!” She shrieks, eyes wide.
“He’s alive just call an ambulance now!” I order her, her hands are shaking as she dials the number.
“Please hurry, my dad, he’s, he’s on the floor and he won’t wake up! Please get here fast it’s Alpha Tiberius!” Her voice breaks as she stares at her father lying on the floor.
“He’s going to be okay.” I say reassuring her. “Go tell George the party is over.”
She nods, running out of the room, tears streaming down her face. Tiberius has to be okay; Leilani can’t lose the only parent she has left. She still has seven years before she takes over the pack, she needs her father’s guidance. I repeatedly check his pulse, waiting for the ambulance.
Several minutes later I hear the faint sound of sirens in the distance. Finally. “Hang in there Tiberius. We are going to take you to the hospital. Leilani needs you. Please just hang on.”
Leilani rushes up the stairs with the two medics. They begin checking vitals, as they lay him on the hard plastic stretcher. “He’s stable, but we need to get him to the hospital.” The lady medic says. Leilani cries as they carry Tiberius down the stairs.
The male medic asks if we want to ride in the ambulance, but I tell him no. Making Leilani glare at me. She doesn’t need to be in there in case something goes wrong. “We have to go with my dad.” She shouts, watching as the ambulance pulls out of the driveway.
“We are.” I say pulling her to my car. We pull out of the driveway, staying right on their tail. Our speed increases, reaching eighty miles per hour, flying through town to the hospital. Once at the hospital I let Leilani out at the door so she can stay with her father as I park the car.
Rushing inside I ask the lady at the desk where they took the alpha. Room 306. I run up the stairs, the elevator will take too long. I find Leilani sitting in an empty room, crying. “They took him for tests.” She says breathing heavily.
I sit on the couch next to her. “It’s going to be okay angel. It’s okay.” I say rubbing her back. She snuggles into me.
Taking a deep breath, I look around anxiously. Last time we were here Leilani’s mom was fighting for her life. I can still see the scared eyes of the little girl that was clinging to me as her dad cried over his mate. Her little hands holding mine as we explained that her mother wouldn’t be coming home. The first little tear streaming down her face, as she shook her head no.
I shake my head, clearing those thoughts away. This time will be different. Tiberius will get better, and he will be home to teach his daughter the ropes of being an alpha.
After several long hours pass, they bring Tiberius back into the room. He’s still unconscious, and he looks so weak all of a sudden. His face is deeply wrinkled, there are dark circles under his eyes, and his body just looks tired. I should have seen the signs. I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t want to fight him on the issue.
“Do they know what’s wrong?” I ask the nurse. A young lady with long blonde hair, wearing light pink scrubs.
She shakes her head sympathetically. “The doctor will be in soon.”
Leilani jumps up, standing by her father’s bed. She reaches out but pulls her hand back. “It’s okay you can touch him.” I say quietly.
She looks at me, then back at her father. Leilani grabs her father’s hand, barely touching him. Holding his hand as if the simplest thing will break him. I grab her shoulders, rubbing gently. “He’s going to be okay.” I say again. At this point I’m not sure if I’m trying to make her feel better or if I’m trying to make myself believe he will be okay.
I can’t lose my best friend. He has always been there for me through everything. We are family. One day I will be his daughter’s husband, and I want him to be there for the wedding. I want him to see the amazing alpha his daughter is going to be. I want him to see his future grandbabies. Tears form in my eyes, but I quickly wipe them away. I have to be strong for Leilani.
The doctor comes in, he’s an older wolf with black and gray hair. He wears his glasses low on his nose, something I would normally laugh at, but now is not the time. “What is wrong with him?” I ask impatiently.
“I am Doctor Miyo. I will be Tiberius’ doctor; we have done some testing on Tiberius. He has a rare brain cancer called Glioblastoma.” The doctor says apologetically.
Brain cancer? I have never heard of a werewolf having brain cancer. “Are you sure Doctor Miyo?”
He nods. “We are running some more tests to confirm, but it showed up on the MRI.”
Leilani bursts into tears. “Is there a cure?” I ask in disbelief.
“Unfortunately, no. There are treatments that help slow the cancer, but there is no cure. I’m sorry.” Doctor Miyo says before walking out of the room.
Leilani stares at her father laying helpless in bed, tears streaming down as she holds his limp hand. Doctor Miyo, wait I say following him out of the room. “What kind of treatments are there?”
“The most common route with this type of brain cancer is surgery to remove the tumor, after the healing process then we will do chemotherapy to try and kill any remaining cancer cells.”
“Okay we will do that then.” I say speaking hopefully.
Doctor Miyo sighs, “You have to know the rate of survival is very low, and if they do survive there are severe side effects that can and usually do happen.”
“Well, we can’t just let him lay there and die! We have to do something.” I snap, overwhelmed with fear and anger.
“I understand.” Doctor Miyo says. “With him being in a coma, the decision will go to whoever he has listed as his power of attorney in this situation.
I shake my head in disbelief. “I’m sure it’s his daughter.”
Doctor Miyo puts his hands in the air, “We have to see legal documentation before we can proceed. I’m sorry sir.”
I can’t believe this, my mate’s father, my best friend, is lying here dying and they can’t do anything about this without some stupid paper. Huffing angrily, I search for the number to Tiberius’ lawyer. Hopefully he will have the paper I need. After four long rings there is no answer. It’s three forty-five in the morning, he’s probably sleeping. I leave a message telling him it’s urgent.
