Chapter 129 Happy moments
He paused, the air suddenly felt colder.
“Did I?” He feigned ignorance.
“Yes,.” She studied him. To her, she felt like he had a past he didn’t want to let go off.
“Are you scared I might die like Heaven?”
Her question froze him in place. Leaving him speechless.
She gently cupped his cheeks, her thumbs brushing his skin. “I’m not Heaven,” she said softly, a tiny pout forming. “And I’m not going to leave you. I already let go of my past… you should too.” Her voice dropped, tinged with jealousy and hurt. “I don’t like that your dead girlfriend still matters this much.”.
If only she knew she was Heaven.
He hated so much that he had to lie to her.
But with her here, alive and warm in his arms, with the way his life finally felt like it had meaning again… he didn’t mind lying a thousand times more if it meant keeping her.
She waited for him to speak, her eyes searching his face.
He slowly covered her hands with his own, holding them against his face like an anchor.
“I’m not… I’m not holding onto some ghost,” he said quietly.
“Heaven’s gone. She’s been gone a long time. What I make you promise it’s not about her.”
He let his thumbs brush slowly along the backs of her hands, buying a few seconds to get his words arranged.
“It’s about you,” he continued.
“I love you so much. And every time I think about losing you…” He swallowed hard, letting his emotions out.. “It fucking terrifies me.”
He leaned in until their foreheads touched, closing the last small distance.
“Because sometimes I’m scared, when you get your memories will come. You will remember who you really are… and you might leave..I just—” his voice cracked.
He exhaled, closing his eyes to stabilize his emotions.
“I just need to hear you say you’re staying. That’s all. I need reassurance.”
Heaven's heart melted.
She understood where he stood, and she felt bad from even making their moment about a dead person.
She pulled back and dropped a kiss on his lips. “I don’t want my memories. You accept me and my son. I don’t feel empty anymore. I’m complete with you..you don’t have to worry about that okay?.”
She wrapped her hands around him pulling him in a tight hug.
“Okay.”
Her nipples still peak, pressed up against his chest and stirred something below his abdomen.
He pulled back.
“I think we should worry about going home” he said “Because I want to go another round..” he squeezed her nipple.
She let out a half-giggle, half-moan.
“Ain’t you tired?”
“I’m I supposed to be?” He bent down to pick her clothes.
“Well you literally carried me for a while and I’m quite weighty.” She told him, legs dangling at the edge of the desk while he was trying to figure out how to put her bra on.
He paused and looked at her face.
“You are weighty in the right places. But not enough to tire me out.”
“Is that a challenge?” She scoffed playfully.
He stepped closer, caging her in with his body, one hand sliding possessively up her thigh.
“You wanna give it a try?”
The land receiver on the table rang out, drawing her back to reality.
She jumped down from the table.
“I forgot about my rounds..”
“Ma, sorry to interrupt you....” came the voice through the speaker. “I just need your signature on the patient's files. It’s past my shifts.”
She flushed red.
“Okay, give me a sec.”
Does it mean they heard her moan? Heaven was deeply embarrassed.
She turned. Maverick was already fully dressed, holding out her gown with a smirk like he hadn’t just made her scream minutes earlier and everyone heard.
She was deeply embarrassed.
“Get dressed.” He offered her clothes with a knowing smirk. “I will grab the file for you.”
Heaven wondered if he wasn’t a bit embarrassed.
He opened the door and walked out.
They had managed to get out of the hospital.
To Heaven she wanted the ground to open and swallow her meanwhile Maverick strolled beside her like he owned the night.
“Are you embarrassed about me?” He asked with a straight face.
The wind tousled her hair. It looked like the sky was ready to split open with rain.
“No.. I’m not.. I promise.. I’m just mortified that they heard us do it.. and..I’m sorry..”
He burst out laughing at her flustered explanation. “I was joking, baby. Don’t cry.”
Heaven swatted his arm. “Don’t do that..” she pouted. Her stomach grumbled.
“Let’s go eat..” he touched his pocket and reached for his keys but it was empty.
“Shit. Must’ve dropped them in your office. Go wait by the car. I’ll be right back.”
He jogged off.
Heaven leaned against the car, scrolling her phone.
“Bracelets here! Four dollars only!” An elderly man pushed a barrow piled with bangles and called out. “Pretty lady!”
She looked up. “Me?”
“I got matching couple bangles. Perfect for you and your husband.” He held up a simple, intertwined pair. “Four dollars but for you, two.”
Husband. Heat bloomed in her cheeks. She didn’t correct him.
“I’ll take them, Grandpa.” She searched her purse and brought out a hundred-dollar bill.
“Keep the change. It’s about to rain, you should go home and rest. The cold isn’t good for your bones.”
The old man grinned, showing a few missing teeth, and rummaged again. “Take this one. It’s called ‘Happy Ending’.”
Heaven smiled and took the bracelets from him..
She thanked him, leaned back against the car, and admired the delicate red threads.
Maverick came out after he had found the keys. He looked at his whole world in a person he was the happiest man on earth but it was short lived when he saw a vehicle veering towards her.
His smile faltered. Her soul left his body. He ran towards her with speed.
“Heaven!!!!!”
She looked up and saw a car coming towards her. The headlights blinded her vision, shock held her in place.
She suddenly felt a hard shove she stumbled back and hit her head on the pavement.
