Chapter 11 THE REVELATION
Chapter 11 THE REVELATION
The following morning, Annabella stood in a hotel conference room, the air thick with the buzzing energy of reporters and flashing cameras. She was flanked by Killian and Luciano, a human shield of two billionaires. The plan was simple in theory: announce an "open relationship" to quell the media storm. In practice, it felt like she was walking a tightrope over a pit of vipers.
Annabella’s phone, which had been off since her escape from the grocery store, had been returned to her just moments before. It was a live wire in her hand, the screen a blaze of notifications. Texts from worried friends, frantic apologies from Claire, and a deluge of messages from coworkers, some sympathetic, some critical, all curious. She couldn’t bring herself to open them. She was too numb, too focused on the performance of a lifetime.
Luciano, ever the charismatic one, took the lead. “We appreciate you all coming on such short notice,” he began, his voice smooth and confident. “As you know, a great deal of misinformation has been circulating about Annabella and our... unique relationship. We wanted to set the record straight.”
He turned to Annabella, his smile warm and genuine. “Annabella is a brilliant, independent woman, and we both have a great deal of respect and affection for her.”
Killian, standing like a statue beside her, finally spoke. “We are not here to discuss the nature of our private lives beyond this. We are here to confirm that Annabella is pregnant, and that we are all committed to supporting her and the child.”
The questions began to fly, a rapid-fire assault of speculation and disbelief. “An open relationship? Is this just a publicity stunt?” “Who is the father?” “Are you all living together?”
Annabella felt a sudden surge of heat on her cheeks. She was the focal point of the world's most salacious soap opera. Her hands, clasped tightly in front of her, were trembling. She felt a gentle squeeze on her elbow. It was Luciano. His touch was a quiet reassurance, a silent message that he had her back.
“We understand this is unconventional,” Annabella said, her voice surprisingly steady. “But the most important thing is the well-being of this child. We are a family, in our own way, and we ask for your respect and privacy.”
The press conference concluded, but the questions followed them out of the room. As they retreated to a private car, Annabella pulled away from both of them. “That was… an experience,” she muttered, burying her face in her hands.
“You were incredible, Annabella,” Luciano said, his hand on her shoulder. “You handled them like a pro.”
Killian was silent, his gaze fixed on her. “You spoke well,” he finally said, his words a rare, measured compliment.
Back at the estate, she finally let herself look at her phone. The messages from Claire were a torrent of despair. “Annabella, I am so, so sorry. I told my friend at the paper, I thought she’d keep it quiet, I swear! I never meant for this to happen. Please, please forgive me.”
A knot of anger tightened in Annabella’s chest. It was Claire’s fault, all of it. The public humiliation, the lies, the media circus. But as she read the pleading words, the raw guilt radiating from the screen, her anger deflated. She knew Claire. Her best friend was a well-meaning disaster, not a malicious saboteur. She couldn’t stay mad. Not when her life was so much bigger than a single, reckless mistake. She texted her back. “It’s okay. I’ll call you later.”
The next day, at the high-end hospital, the atmosphere was a mix of sterile calm and suffocating tension. Dr. Hayes, her confidante and doctor, was there to guide her through the paternity test. The process was quick, a simple blood draw. It was the waiting that felt like an eternity.
Killian and Luciano were both there, pacing the waiting room like caged animals. They had agreed to a binding arbitration, no matter the result, they would abide by her decision.
Finally, Dr. Hayes returned, a somber look on her face. She held a manila folder in her hand. “Annabella,” she said softly, “the results are in.”
Annabella’s heart was a drum solo in her chest. She looked at Luciano, whose face was pale with nerves. Then she looked at Killian, who was a study in controlled emotion. She felt a flash of regret. What if it was Killian? She was more drawn to him, yes, but Luciano offered a promise of a life that felt more... normal.
Dr. Hayes opened the folder and a collective exhale filled the room. “Killian Astor… you are the father.”
The words hung in the air, heavy and final. Luciano’s face crumbled. The light in his eyes dimmed, replaced by a profound sadness that was almost unbearable to watch. Killian, on the other hand, straightened, a look of triumph, relief, and something she couldn't place on his face.
He turned to her, his expression hard. “The test is done. We can go now. I’ll have my security take you to the estate. We need to plan.”
Annabella looked at Luciano, who had sunk into a chair, his head in his hands. Her heart ached for him. She felt an overwhelming need to comfort him.
“I’m not going with you,” she said, her voice small but firm.
Killian’s head snapped back. “What? Annabella, the test…”
“I know what the test said,” she said, walking over to Luciano. She knelt beside his chair, her hand resting gently on his arm. “I’m not going anywhere, not yet.”
Luciano looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “Annabella… you don’t have to do this. I understand.”
“I don’t,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “I don’t understand any of this. But I know that I don’t want to go to that estate alone. I made a promise. That we would all be a family, in our own way, for the sake of this child.”
Killian’s voice was a low growl. “This is ridiculous. He’s not the father. He has no claim.”
Luciano stood up, his face filled with a raw, fierce determination that took Annabella’s breath away. “I don’t care what the test says, Astor. I will be in this child’s life. I don’t know what I feel for Annabella yet, but it’s something real. Something different. I want to be a part of this. I won’t abandon her, or the baby.”
Annabella turned to Killian, her chin high. “He stays. Or I leave. This is a package deal.”
Killian stared at her, his face a mask of shock and fury. She had never seen him so close to losing control. He opened his mouth as if to protest, then slammed it shut. He huffed, a sound of pure frustration, and turned on his heel. He left the hospital without another word.
Luciano watched him go, then turned to her, a small, triumphant smile on his lips. “You won’t regret this, Annabella. I promise you.”
She couldn’t help but smile back, a tear escaping down her cheek. She was terrified, yes. But looking at Luciano, at the genuine affection and hope in his eyes, she knew that she wasn’t alone. And for the first time in a long time, that felt like more than enough.
