The Alphas' Sacrifice
Dawn broke through the trees as Akira collected her alphas in a small clearing. Their faces showed exhaustion, but purpose burned in their eyes.
"We need to split into teams," Akira said, her voice stronger than she felt. "The Leviathan is too powerful for a direct attack."
Landon nodded, his usually calm face tight with worry. "It's hunting us. Those corrupted dogs will find this camp soon."
"Then we move now," Kael decided, looking at the golden threads linking him to Akira. They were thin but intact.
Asher paced the area, his mind racing. "The Leviathan wants our ties. It's using them somehow."
Akira touched the faint golden light under her skin. "It's trying to corrupt what we built together."
"So we use that against it," Ethan said suddenly, his eyes wide with understanding. "It thinks it knows how our bonds work, but it doesn't understand what truly connects us."
Caleb frowned. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying we need to sacrifice something," Ethan explained, looking at each alpha. "Our power."
Silence fell over the group. The alphas traded glances, understanding dawning on their faces.
"The Leviathan expects us to protect our bonds," Kael said slowly. "What if we cut them instead?"
Akira's heart dropped. "No! The ties are what make us strong."
"Not the golden threads," Asher explained, catching on quickly. "The power flowing through them. We can send it all to you."
Around them, the pack members were waking, preparing for whatever plan their leaders made. The weight of their trust pressed on Akira's shoulders.
"It would leave us powerless," Landon warned, his voice low. "Just regular wolves."
"But Akira would have all our strength," Caleb argued. "Five alphas' power in one Luna."
Akira shook her head. "It's too dangerous. What if it kills you?"
Kael took her hand, his touch gentle despite his rough look. "Some things are worth the risk."
A howl echoed through the trees, closer than before. The corrupted dogs were coming.
"We don't have time to argue," Ethan said quickly. "The ritual won't be easy, but it's our only chance."
Akira looked at each alpha—men who had once been enemies but now stood united. The thought of losing them made her chest ache.
"I can't ask you to do this," she whispered.
"You're not asking," Asher said with a goofy smile. "We're offering."
Caleb nodded firmly. "This is our choice."
Around them, pack members gathered, feeling something important was happening. They made a protective circle, facing outward, ready to defend their leaders.
"How would it work?" Akira finally asked.
Ethan explained quickly. "We form a circle. Each alpha channels his power through the link to you. Instead of sharing strength both ways, we give everything."
"It will confuse the Leviathan," Landon added. "It expects us to fight together, not sacrifice for each other."
The howls grew louder, more numerous. They were running out of time.
"What's the plan after?" Akira asked, her mind racing. "Once I have your power?"
Kael's face hardened. "We distract the Leviathan. Draw its attention while you reach the ritual place on the mountain."
"No!" Akira objected. "Without your powers, you'll be—"
"We'll be doing our duty," Caleb cut in, his voice firm. "Protecting our Luna."
Tears filled Akira's eyes as understanding hit her. They were willing to die for this chance.
"I can't lose you," she whispered.
Asher squeezed her shoulder. "You won't. We're too stubborn to die."
A crash in the distance made everyone nervous. The corrupted dogs had found them.
"Now or never," Landon said quietly.
The alphas formed a circle around Akira, each taking the hand of those beside them. The golden threads linking them to their Luna pulsed with light.
"Focus on the bonds," Ethan directed. "Feel the power flowing through them."
Akira closed her eyes, feeling each connection—Kael's steady strength, Asher's quick mind, Caleb's fierce courage, Ethan's deep wisdom, and Landon's sharp instincts.
"Now," Kael ordered.
The alphas began chanting words in an ancient language, their sounds blending into one. The golden threads glowed, pulsing like heartbeats.
Pain crossed each alpha's face as their power flowed away from them. The threads thickened, bringing their strength to Akira.
Golden light burst from her skin, filling the clearing. The pack members gasped, covering their eyes.
Akira felt the change immediately—power unlike anything she'd ever known filled her. Her senses sharpened, her muscles stronger, and the golden light around her blazed like the sun.
One by one, the alphas dropped to their knees, drained but still aware. The threads connecting them to Akira were now paper-thin, barely noticeable.
"It worked," Ethan breathed, his voice weak.
Akira helped Kael to his feet, worried by how ordinary he felt now. No alpha power radiated from him, just the spirit of a normal wolf.
"Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
He nodded, resolve replacing the power in his eyes. "Better than okay. We have a fighting chance now."
The sounds of coming enemies grew closer. Branches snapped as corrupted dogs charged through the forest.
"Go," Asher pushed, standing shakily. "We'll lead them away from you."
"Split up," Caleb added, looking at his fellow alphas. "Five targets are harder to catch than one."
Landon nodded. "We'll meet at the eastern ridge if we can."
Akira's heart threatened to break as she understood what they were doing—offering themselves as bait.
"I'll reach the ritual site," she promised, golden light flaring around her hands. "I'll end this."
Kael pulled her close for one fierce moment. "We believe in you."
The other alphas circled her, each touching her shoulder in farewell.
"For the pack," Ethan said quietly.
"For our Luna," Caleb added.
The corrupted wolves burst into the clearing, their eyes black, their hair darkened by the Leviathan's influence.
"Now!" Kael shouted.
The five alphas split, running in different ways. Each took a group of loyal pack members with them, drawing the altered wolves away from Akira.
She watched them go, golden light burning around her like armor.
"I won't fail you," she whispered, turning toward the mountain where the Leviathan waited.
Above her, the black clouds swirled, and faraway laughter echoed from the peak. The Leviathan was watching, waiting, unaware that its greatest danger was no longer five alphas and their Luna.
It was one woman carrying the power of them all.
With a big breath, Akira began to run.
