Chapter 9: CHANGE IN AGREEMENT

TALON’S POV

As I sat at my desk, my gaze fixated on the letter delivered by the maid, addressed to me from Ryker. An unsettling feeling gnawed at me as I clutched the paper in my trembling hand.

Taking a deep breath, my heart raced as I carefully opened the letter from Ryker, the formidable leader of the Shadowood pack and Elena's stepfather. As I unfolded the note, I began to read the words written in Ryker's familiar script.

"Talon," the letter commenced, Ryker's words echoing in my head. "I hope this letter finds you well, but I fear it carries grave news. It is with a heavy heart that I must convey to you that Elena and I will no longer be marrying you. Instead, she has chosen to wed your brother, Dan, for reasons I can not fathom."

My hands shook uncontrollably as I continued to absorb Ryker's shocking revelation. The woman who had been so resolute about marrying me had inexplicably decided to marry my own brother. It was a cruel twist of fate, and I felt as though the very ground beneath me had shifted, leaving me in a bewildering state of disbelief.

"I realize this news will be a profound shock," Ryker's letter continued, "and I want to express my deepest apologies for any complications it may bring to you. Please comprehend that Elena's decision was not taken lightly, and it was solely her choice. She believes that Dan would be a more suitable leader for our two packs, and I can not oppose that, especially since she has agreed to marry him to unite our packs. Her choice between the two of you holds no importance to me. My sole objective is to unite the packs and confront the imminent threat we face from the hunters."

Rage consumed me as I dwelled on Elena, the woman I had envisioned sharing my life with, marrying Dan, bearing his mark, and even having his children made me sick to my stomach The dreams I had cherished, the carefully crafted plans I had nurtured – all crumbled in an instant because she would rather marry my brother than me.

Ryker's letter continued, expressing his hope that our bond would remain intact despite this unexpected turn of events. How could it not be affected? He had initially promised her to me, yet when she chose to marry Dan, he didn't intervene on my behalf. I couldn't help but label him as cowardly as I tore the letter to shreds in my hands, overwhelmed by fury.

Fuming with anger, I stormed out of the study and headed straight for the Shadowood pack, determined to confront Ryker and demand an explanation for his sudden acceptance of Elena's decision to marry Dan and not me after we had come to an agreement.

An hour later…

My fury still burning hot, I charged through the Shadowood pack grounds, my heart pounding with a potent mix of rage and disbelief. The news Ryker had delivered gnawed at the back of my mind.

As I pushed open the wooden doors to Ryker's study, the room was bathed in the soft, golden light of the setting sun, casting his silhouette near the window. His expression remained strangely calm, almost serene, despite the fact that his wavering decisions had disrupted all my carefully laid plans. It was precisely this weakness in his leadership that had fueled my desire to remove him from power and take charge of the two packs.

A true leader should possess unwavering resolve, impervious to the sway of others, be it his daughter or the pack. Their opinions should hold no weight when it comes to a leader's firm decisions, as a leader's word must be the law, with no room for opposition.

"Ryker!" I seethed, my voice quivering with rage. "What madness is this?"

He turned to face me, his eyes cold and emotionless. "Talon, sit down. And stop yelling in my office; remember, this is my pack, not yours."

I clenched my fists, battling the urge to lunge at him. "Talk? Do you want to talk now after springing this bombshell on me?"

Ryker remained eerily composed. "Yes. Sit."

Reluctantly, I took a seat, not out of respect for him, but because if I continued standing, I might lose control and attack him. My body trembled with the effort to contain my fury. "Speak, then, and make it quick."

Ryker approached, his gaze unwavering. "Talon, I've reconsidered your marriage to Elena due to several factors. We've decided it's in the pack's best interest for Elena to marry your brother, Dan."

His words hung in the air, an oppressive silence enveloping the room. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "You're really testing my patience, Ryker. Why, at the eleventh hour, have you chosen to change your mind?"

"Because Dan is a better fit for Elena than you, and for the sake of our alliance, our leaders must understand each other," Ryker calmly explained.

My anger surged like a tempest, and I jumped to my feet, sending a nearby table crashing. "You treacherous snake! After all we've agreed on, you're going on to stab me in the back. "

Ryker remained resolute. "It's not betrayal, Talon. It's politics."

I advanced toward him, hands trembling. "Politics? This is outrageous! We had an agreement, and now you're reneging on it. Only cowards break their word," I retorted as Ryker's face contorted with anger.

"I've been more than accommodating with that tone of yours. Best you calm down before I have you escorted out," Ryker said, his voice growing louder. Before I could respond, the castle guards burst into the room, their imposing armored presence filling the space.

"Is there a problem here?" their leader inquired.

I glared at Ryker, my chest heaving with anger. "No problem. I'm leaving." I turned to Ryker one last time, fire in my eyes. "But mark my words, Ryker, you'll pay dearly for going back on this agreement."

"Is that a threat?" Ryker asked, his brow raised as he stared at me.

"It's not a threat but a warning." With that said , he stormed out of his office and headed back to the Silverwood pack.

As I went back to my room, my heart was pounding in my chest, consumed by a maelstrom of rage and fury. Ryker's words still echoed in my mind, taunting me, mocking me. How could Dan choose Elena over me? I couldn't let this happen, not after all the things I've done, all the people I had to get rid of to get to her, to get Ryker to accept this agreement, there is no way in hell I was going to allow Dan take Elena away from me

As I entered the dimly lit room, I slammed the door shut behind me, the sound reverberating like a gunshot. I paced back and forth, trying to calm the tempest within me. But there was no calming the storm. I needed answers, a way to fix this, to make Elena see that I was the one meant for her.

I collapsed onto my bed, my hands clenched into fists. "What do I do, damn it?" I muttered through gritted teeth. That inner voice, a whisper that had been with me for as long as I could remember, now spoke louder than ever.

"You can't let this slip through your fingers, Talon," it hissed, like a serpent coiled in the depths of my mind. I closed my eyes, attempting to block out the turmoil within me, and focused on that sinister inner voice.

"How?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Go through with the plan to execute the leaders of the Silverwood pack," the voice suggested ominously, sending a chill down my spine. "Then no one would be able to stop you from having Elena, even if that buffoon Ryker said he's changed his mind."

He was right, If I were to eliminate Ryker before the announcement, no one would discover that he had changed his mind about me marrying Elena and everything will go the way it was supposed to go in the first place.

Yes, that was the solution, and I relished in the thought of being the one to witness his last breath as justice for his betrayal.

As I thought about what I was about to do, a heavy sense of uneasiness weighed on me. I knew the path I was considering was full of risks and could have serious consequences. But my anger and desire for revenge against Ryker for going back on the agreement pushed me forward.

I realized I had to be extremely careful and plan everything meticulously to avoid getting caught. My mind raced as I thought about every aspect of my plan and all the possible outcomes. It was a dangerous game I was playing, and I had to be cautious to avoid any unintended consequences that could lead to my own downfall.
