Chapter 45: Wolves Beneath

The earth trembled again before dawn.

Clara jolted upright in the cot beside Sarah’s, heart hammering. The shaking stopped after just a few seconds, but everyone in the old church was awake. Liam was already at the window, eyes scanning the tree line.

“That’s the third tremor this week,” he said.

Clara pulled her coat on, grabbed her crossbow. “It’s not tremors. It’s movement.”

Beneath Black Hollow, the roots of the town ran deep, deeper than any map showed. The old mine network, collapsed decades ago after the first wolf attacks, had long been avoided. But today, Jonas ordered them in.

“We need to know what’s underneath us,” he said. “If the Hollow is waking, it’s not just the trees we should be worried about.”

The Vigil geared up. Torches, blades, salt, glyph stones. Clara double-checked her bandolier, slipping the obsidian fang into a pocket. It still pulsed sometimes, warm against her ribs. Like a heartbeat.

They descended through a collapsed shaft behind the cemetery, iron steps echoing with every footfall. The air grew colder the deeper they went, filled with the scent of rust and rot.

“Something’s been down here,” Marnie said, shining her flashlight over clawed stone walls.

They found bones first animal, mostly. Then symbols. Spirals, eyes, and runes carved into the very rock. But deeper still, they found something worse.

A chamber.

Wide and circular, with a collapsed ceiling that opened just enough to let faint moonlight in. At the center was a pit. It wasn’t natural. Stone had been carved away in rings, leading into darkness too deep to see.

Jonas stepped to the edge, dropping a stone. It never hit bottom.

“Looks like a well,” Liam muttered.

“No,” Clara said, her voice dry. “It’s a mouth.”

Before anyone could respond, the growling started.

From the far corridor, shapes emerged. Not fully wolf, not fully human. Twisted things emaciated and pale, fur in patches, eyes glowing faintly red. The air filled with their scent damp, feral, ancient.

Umbra Lupin. Or what remained of them.

Clara raised her crossbow. “We have company!”

They hit hard and fast. The Vigil stood their ground, forming a circle as the creatures lunged. Liam fought with brutal precision, Clara with sharp focus. Arrows flew, spells lit the dark, and blades carved the air. Blood hit stone.

But even as they dropped one beast, two more appeared.

“They’re coming out of the pit!” Nora shouted.

Jonas threw down a vial that burst into light, stunning the creatures. “Fall back! Now!”

The retreat was chaotic. Through tunnels and chutes, up crumbling steps, the Vigil barely escaped with their lives. Marnie was slashed along the ribs, Nora limping with a twisted ankle. They burst into daylight like drowning souls breaking the surface.

Only once they were safely aboveground did Clara realize

Something had followed them.

A shadow. A shape. Watching from the trees.

Back at the church, Marnie stitched her own wound. Jonas slammed the door behind him.

“We can’t go down there again,” he said. “Not without losing someone.”

“They weren’t just monsters,” Clara said, pacing. “They were guarding something. That pit it wasn’t a cave-in. It was made.”

Sarah, still pale and whispering, looked up from her seat by the fire. “It’s a root. The Hollow spreads beneath us like a tree. That was the heartwood. The source.”

Liam frowned. “Then what happens if that root wakes up?”

Everyone went quiet.

Later that night, Clara sat with the fang again, cradled in her hand like a prayer stone. The glow returned.

And so did the voice.

“Blood remembers.”

“You opened the way. Now the wolves return not as they were, but as they became.”

“The pit is not the end. It is the beginning.”

She didn’t sleep.

At sunrise, Jonas called the Vigil together. “We move at nightfall,” he said. “We’re going to collapse the tunnels. All of them.”

Clara’s heart sank. “You want to bury it?”

“I want to buy us time.”

Clara looked toward the forest, its edge touched with a golden glow. She could feel something stirring there, just beneath the surface. The trees weren’t just watching anymore.

They were waiting.
