Chapter 40: The Final Binding
Clara's breath came in short bursts, her heart hammering in her chest as the Hollow's embodiment towered over them. The ground quaked beneath her, the crimson light from the chasm painting the trees in a haunting glow. This was it. The moment she had been dreading and expecting all at once.
The Hollow wasn’t just a curse, an ancient force that had long lingered over Black Hollow it was a creature. Alive. And it was not finished with them. It had never been finished.
Liam stood beside her, tense, his eyes flicking between Clara and the creature that had emerged from the earth. He could feel the power radiating from it, heavy and suffocating. "Clara, what are we going to do?"
"We bind it," she said, her voice calm but resolute. "Not destroy it. We keep it contained. We can’t let it roam free again."
“But how? We’ve tried everything.” Liam's hand was on his blade, but he knew this was no ordinary enemy.
Clara’s mind raced. She thought back to everything they had learned, everything they had done to weaken the Hollow's hold on the town. It was more than just magic. It was more than the bloodline that connected her to Black Hollow, more than the rituals, the runes, the weapons. The Hollow was tied to the land itself and to her. It had been waiting for her. Now, she had to return the favor.
The creature's eyes locked onto hers. There was intelligence in its gaze, recognition. It knew what she had done. And it wanted to punish her for it. Its growl resonated through her bones.
"You cannot stop me," the Hollow said, its voice like a thousand whispers, the earth groaning beneath the weight of its words. "I am the land. I am the blood that feeds it. You cannot undo what is woven into this place."
"I can bind you," Clara replied, her voice low but steady. "I will."
She felt the pulse of power within her, the connection she had begun to understand, the mark of the Hollow that ran through her veins. It wasn’t just her blood that tied her to this place. It was her will. She was more than the vessel of the curse. She was the one who could control it.
“Liam,” she said, her voice quiet but urgent. “The sigil the one from the old church. The one we thought was lost.”
His eyes widened as he understood. “The binding. The one they used to trap it before. But we don’t have the full ritual ”
“We don’t need it,” Clara interrupted. “Not anymore. I’ve seen it. I know it now. It’s not just a spell. It’s me.”
The Hollow snarled, as if it understood what she meant. The ground shook harder now, cracks snaking out from the chasm, the trees swaying violently as though they were alive, reaching toward her. It was responding to her words, to the pull of power she had awakened in herself.
Clara raised her hands, her fingers trembling but her resolve firm. She could feel the blood in her veins, the pulse of energy growing stronger. It was the Hollow's energy, but she could control it. She had to. She had no choice.
She spoke the words, a chant older than the land itself, the language of the earth that few understood. Her voice rang out through the trees, echoing over the ruins of the old church and the stone circle. She felt the ground beneath her vibrate, responding to her call.
The Hollow roared, a sound of pure rage that shook the heavens, but Clara did not flinch. She pressed on, her hands glowing with a dim red light as she wove the sigils in the air, calling the land back into balance. The creature's growls grew louder, more frantic, but it could not stop the binding.
The land responded to her, the pulse of energy now growing brighter, sharper. Clara felt the earth’s heartbeat align with her own. The Hollow was fighting her, but she could feel its fear. It had been bound before. It knew the consequences if she succeeded.
Liam stepped forward, his voice breaking through the noise. "Clara, focus! You have to hold it!"
The creature’s massive form lurched toward them, its eyes glowing with a terrifying hunger, but Clara's power surged, crackling through the air like lightning. She locked eyes with it, her voice rising, chanting the final words.
A deafening roar shook the land as the Hollow’s form began to shift, its massive body flickering, as if being torn apart by the very magic Clara wielded. The ground beneath them cracked and split, but the crimson glow dimmed, its pulse slowing as the creature’s form began to fragment.
The Hollow screamed, a sound of pure, inhuman rage, and Clara felt the weight of the curse bearing down on her. The energy of the land, the blood spilled for centuries, tried to push back. But Clara refused to yield. She would not let it win. She couldn’t.
With a final, desperate cry, Clara thrust her hands forward, sending a wave of red energy rippling through the ground. The earth trembled, and for a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. Then, the energy exploded outward, a surge of light and sound that cracked the sky open.
The Hollow let out a final, agonizing roar, and then it was gone.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Clara collapsed to her knees, gasping for air, the weight of what she had just done crashing down on her. Her body ached, her blood boiling, but she knew that she had succeeded. The Hollow was no more. The land was quiet.
Liam was at her side instantly, pulling her into his arms, his voice urgent as he checked her for injuries. "Clara, are you okay? What happened?"
"I... I did it," Clara whispered, her voice hoarse. She looked around, taking in the stillness of the woods. The dark red glow was gone, the cracks in the earth sealing themselves, the trees standing still as if nothing had happened.
"But at what cost?" Liam murmured, his voice filled with concern.
Clara didn’t answer. She couldn’t. She didn’t know yet. But she knew one thing for sure: Black Hollow was no longer its prisoner.
And neither was she.
