Chapter 33: Echoes of the Past

Chapter 33: Echoes of the Past

The sky above Black Hollow had turned a strange shade of purple, the clouds swirling like a storm that hadn’t yet arrived. Clara could feel the tension in the air the weight of the curse, the pull of the Hollow. It was getting stronger, and she wasn’t sure how much longer they could hold it at bay.

They had left the caverns behind, the echoes of the wolves’ howls still ringing in their ears as they made their way to the town. Every step felt like a countdown. The Hollow’s power was no longer just a distant force it was here, in the very soil of Black Hollow, and it was feeding off the fear that had settled over the town.

Liam walked beside her, his face tight with determination. He had been quieter than usual, his thoughts clearly heavy. Clara could sense that he was grappling with his own inner demons. She knew the feeling all too well.

"We’re running out of time," Liam said, his voice low.

Clara nodded, her gaze fixed ahead. "I know. We have to find a way to stop it before it takes everything."

Jonas, who had been walking a few steps ahead, turned back to them. "We don’t have much of a choice. We have to figure out where the Hollow’s heart is. The source of its power. If we can destroy that, maybe we can break the curse for good."

Clara glanced at him, a flicker of doubt crossing her face. "And if we can’t? What happens then?"

Jonas didn’t answer right away. He glanced at the others, his face shadowed with uncertainty. "Then we do what we can to protect the town. But I won’t lie if we can’t destroy the heart, then we’re all doomed."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence, but Clara didn’t let them sink in. She couldn’t afford to dwell on the possibility of failure. Not now.

They reached the outskirts of Black Hollow just as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon. The town was quiet, too quiet. The usual hum of life was absent no chatter from the market, no sounds of children playing, no lanterns flickering in windows. It felt like a ghost town.

Clara's pulse quickened. She had lived through the horrors of the past, but this… this felt different. There was something in the air, something heavy and wrong. It was like the town itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

"Where are the others?" Clara asked, looking around. She could see a few familiar faces in the distance, people she had known all her life, but they were all moving with a strange urgency, as though they were being pulled by some unseen force.

"They’re still gathering," Jonas said. "We need to make sure everyone’s prepared. The Hollow’s power is close to reaching its peak. We need to be ready for whatever comes next."

Clara nodded, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. She had lived in Black Hollow her entire life, and she had never felt this kind of fear hanging over the town before. It was as if the very ground beneath her feet was alive, aware, and waiting for something.

They made their way toward the center of town, where the old church stood—a forgotten relic of the past, now a gathering place for the Vigil. It had once been a place of worship, but now it served as a sanctuary for those who fought against the curse. The doors were open, and as Clara stepped inside, she was met with the familiar sight of the Vigil members preparing for battle.

The room was filled with hushed voices, the clinking of armor, and the sharp scent of herbs and salt. Everyone looked up as Clara entered, their expressions a mixture of relief and fear.

"Clara," Nora said, her voice soft but steady. "We were beginning to worry."

"We’re not out of the woods yet," Clara replied, her eyes scanning the room. "The Hollow’s heart is still out there, and we need to find it. Now."

Jonas stepped forward, his face grim. "We’ll find it. But we need to move quickly. The longer we wait, the more power the Hollow gains."

A silence fell over the room as the weight of Jonas’s words settled in. Clara could feel the pressure building. This was the moment. They were all standing on the edge of a precipice, and if they didn’t act soon, there would be no coming back.

Marnie, who had been quietly observing the group, spoke up. "The Hollow’s heart… it’s not just a physical place. It’s a manifestation of its power. It’s alive in the land, in the very soil. It could be anywhere."

Clara turned to her, her mind racing. "But where do we start? How do we even begin to find something like that?"

Marnie’s eyes flickered, and for a moment, Clara saw something dark behind them. "There are ancient symbols," she said quietly. "Symbols that mark the places where the Hollow’s power is strongest. They were hidden long ago, but… I know where to look."

"Then let’s go," Clara said, her voice resolute. "We don’t have time to waste."

The Vigil began to gather their things, preparing for the next phase of their journey. As Clara watched them, she felt the weight of the situation pressing down on her. This wasn’t just about saving the town it was about her. The curse was a part of her, as much a part of Black Hollow as the trees and the hills. The Hollow had claimed her, but she was determined to take back control.

As the Vigil readied themselves to leave, Clara stepped outside the church, the cool night air biting at her skin. The moon hung high in the sky, its pale light casting an eerie glow over the town. The howl of wolves echoed faintly in the distance, sending a chill down her spine.

The Hollow was waiting.

And Clara was ready to face it head-on.
