Chapter 26: Echoes of the Hollow

Chapter 26: Echoes of the Hollow

The forest knew their names now.

Clara felt it in the rustle of the leaves, in the way the wind carried whispers through the trees. The Hollow was stirring awake in ways it hadn't been for generations. And she had decided to walk straight into its throat.

The Vigil had split into three teams. Clara, Liam, and Sarah were heading into the Hollow's center, a forbidden stretch of forest that ancient records only referred to as "the Deep Grove." Most locals never entered it. Some claimed it didn't even exist—that it only appeared to those the Hollow called.

That made it the perfect place for the Umbra Lupin to hide their heart.

Jonas handed Clara a compass before they left. The needle spun wildly.

"Don’t trust your senses in there. Trust your instincts."

"Instincts get people killed," Sarah said flatly.

"So does hesitation," Clara replied.

They entered the Hollow before dawn.

Immediately, the air thickened. Mist coiled around their boots, pulling at them like fingers. Birds did not sing here. The sun barely reached through the canopy.

As they pushed deeper, reality bent. Trees leaned inward unnaturally. Paths shifted. Once, Clara looked behind them and saw only endless trees—no sign of their trail.

"It’s alive," Liam said. "The forest. It’s moving around us."

Sarah touched the bark of a tree. Her fingers came away red. Not sap.

Blood.

They pressed on.

Hours passed or maybe days. Time folded in on itself. Hunger, thirst, fatigue became distant concepts. Clara saw flashes in the corner of her eye—shadows moving just outside the firelight of her torch.

Then the ground dropped out from beneath her. She landed hard on damp stone. The fall knocked the wind from her lungs. She tried to call out, but the forest above had vanished. She was alone in a cavern lit by a pale blue glow.

A ring of stones surrounded her, each etched with unfamiliar symbols.

She wasn’t alone.

A figure stood at the edge of the circle. Tall. Shrouded in black fur. Not a beast, but not human either. It wore bone armor and carried a staff topped with a wolf skull.

Clara rose slowly. "You’re one of them."

The figure didn’t respond in words. Instead, it lowered its hood.

She gasped.

It was a woman eyes luminous gold, her face lined with tribal scars. She couldn’t have been older than thirty, but something ageless lingered behind her gaze.

"You carry our blood," she said.

Clara’s throat tightened. "What do you mean?"

"Your ancestors fled the pact. But blood remembers. And blood returns."

Clara backed up. "I’m not one of you."

"Not yet. But you were chosen. And now you must choose in turn."

The stones around her flared to life. Visions swam in the air memories not her own. Wolves running under red moons. Fire consuming a village. A girl held aloft by shadows.

The woman stepped forward. "The Umbra Lupin do not kill for sport. We purge the infection. The Hollow does not forget betrayal."

Clara’s voice was barely a whisper. "Then why let me live?"

"Because you are the link. The one who might end the cycle. Or become its vessel."

The visions vanished. The woman turned and walked away into the mist.

"Wait!" Clara cried.

But she was gone.

A rope dropped from the hole above. Liam’s voice echoed, panicked. "Clara!"

She grabbed the line, climbed out with trembling arms.

Sarah stared. "Where were you? We looked for hours. The floor just... sealed up."

Clara didn’t speak. She just stared at the trees.

They were watching her now.

Back at the church, Clara sat alone again with the boy. He still hadn’t spoken since his first confession. But tonight, he reached for her hand.

"I saw you," he whispered. "In the Hollow. They showed me."

Clara stiffened. "What did they show you?"

"That you're the chain. And the key."

She gently squeezed his fingers. "Do you know what that means?"

He nodded. "It means you have to choose who you are."

She left the room and found Jonas in the war chamber.

"We have to accelerate our timeline," she said.

He looked up, wary. "Why?"

"Because I think I’m running out of time. And the Hollow... it’s not waiting anymore."

Jonas didn’t ask questions. He simply began to move pieces on the map.

The final war had begun to stir, and Clara felt the old blood waking inside her.

She didn’t know if she would survive it.

But she knew she had to try.
