Chapter 14: Echoes of the Past

Chapter 14: Echoes of the Past

The forest was still.

Clara’s feet crunched softly on the dry leaves beneath her as she walked beside Liam, each step a reminder of how far they had come and how much further they had to go. The air felt heavy, thick with the weight of ancient secrets, and Clara couldn’t shake the sense that they were being watched.

They had been in the woods for hours, their search for any clue to the true source of the curse proving more elusive than either of them had hoped. They were heading deeper now, into an area they’d never ventured before an overgrown path that led toward an abandoned clearing.

Clara had heard whispers of it from the older residents of Black Hollow a place said to be where the original pact had been made, where the Rourke family had first struck their deal with the creature in the woods. If there were any answers to be found, it would be there.

But as they walked, the feeling of being watched only intensified, and Clara’s unease grew with each step. The trees above her seemed to bend inwards, their thick canopies blocking out most of the light, making the forest feel like a place out of time.

“There’s something off about this place,” Liam muttered, his hand gripping the flashlight tightly, as though it were the only thing separating them from whatever was lurking in the shadows.

“I feel it too,” Clara admitted. “Like… like the forest is holding its breath.”

Liam glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “You think we’re close?”

“I don’t know,” Clara said. “But I have to believe we are. I have to believe that if we can find this place, we can figure out how to end this once and for all.”

They reached the edge of the clearing, and Clara felt a shiver run through her as the trees opened up to reveal an ancient stone altar, weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. The stones were covered in moss and creeping vines, but there was no mistaking the markings etched into the surface.

Clara stepped forward, her fingers brushing the cold stone. The symbols were faint but familiar there, carved into the altar, was the same crescent moon-shaped mark that Father Elijah had shown her. The same mark that he had carried on his arm for years.

“This is it,” she whispered, her heart pounding in her chest. “This is where it all began.”

Liam stepped up beside her, his eyes scanning the clearing. “Do you think this is where the pact was made?”

Clara nodded slowly. “I think this is where the Rourkes sealed their deal with the creature. This is the place that binds everything together. The curse. The werewolves. Everything.”

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of history settling heavily over them. Clara’s mind raced. What if the answers were here? What if the key to breaking the curse was hidden somewhere in this forgotten clearing?

Without warning, a rustling sound came from the trees behind them.

Clara spun around, her hand instinctively reaching for the knife she had used to kill the werewolf. Her heart hammered in her chest as she searched the shadows for the source of the sound. Was it another creature? Or something else?

But there was no creature, no werewolf. Instead, a figure emerged from the darkness a tall man, his face partially obscured by the shadows. He was dressed in a long coat, his eyes gleaming with an unnatural light as he stepped into the clearing.

Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She didn’t recognize him, but there was something about him—something familiar. The man seemed to exude a quiet power, the kind that only comes from years of being entrenched in the dark side of Black Hollow’s history.

Liam instinctively took a step forward, his posture protective. “Who are you?”

The man smiled, though it wasn’t a friendly smile. “You don’t recognize me, do you?”

Clara felt a chill run down her spine. The voice she knew that voice. It was like a whisper from her past, something she had long buried but couldn’t escape.

The man stepped closer, the light from Liam’s flashlight catching his face. Clara gasped as recognition struck her.

It was Evan the man she had once loved. The man whose death had been a mystery, whose disappearance had haunted her for years.

But Evan was dead.

Wasn’t he?

Clara’s mind reeled. Her pulse raced, and for a moment, everything seemed to slow down. She had seen Evan’s body. She had buried him herself. But this man this figure standing before her—was alive.

“Evan?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The man smiled darkly, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that sent a chill through Clara’s bones. “You’re a smart woman, Clara. I’m impressed. You always were.”

Liam stepped in front of Clara, his voice sharp. “What the hell is going on here? Who are you?”

Evan’s smile widened. “I’m someone who has been watching over you for a very long time. Someone who has a vested interest in making sure the curse continues.”

Clara shook her head, her mind spinning. “No. No, you’re dead. I watched you die. You”

“Did you?” Evan interrupted smoothly, his voice laced with something almost… mocking. “Did you really? Or did you just bury the idea of me so deep that you couldn’t remember the truth? Maybe you never truly saw what happened.”

Liam moved forward, his voice a low growl. “Enough with the games. What do you want?”

Evan’s eyes flicked to Liam, then back to Clara. His smile faded slightly, and for the first time, there was a glimmer of something darker something that wasn’t just malevolent but predatory.

“I’m here because it’s time,” Evan said slowly, his voice now tinged with something cold. “The curse is ready to reach its next stage. And you, Clara, are the final piece of the puzzle.”

Clara felt a twist in her gut. “What are you talking about?”

Evan’s smile returned, this time even colder. “The curse feeds on blood. But not just any blood your blood. The bloodline you come from, the one that was never truly severed. Your family, Clara… You are its true heir.”

Liam’s head whipped toward Clara, his expression a mix of confusion and shock. “What? What is he talking about?”

Clara didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stepped back, her hand tightening around the knife. It couldn’t be true. It couldn’t.

But deep down, she felt it the truth buried in the core of her being, the terrifying reality that her connection to Black Hollow’s cursed past was deeper than she had ever imagined.

“You’ve been playing this game all along, haven’t you?” Clara said, her voice trembling, but there was a fire in her eyes now. “You were never really dead. You’ve been waiting for me to find you.”

Evan’s laugh was soft, almost pitying. “I never died, Clara. I just… evolved. And now, I will finish what I started. The curse will live again, and this time, no one will be able to stop it.”

Clara raised the knife, her heart pounding in her chest. “You’re wrong. I won’t let this happen.”

Evan tilted his head, almost admiring her defiance. “We’ll see, won’t we?”
