Chapter 17: The Vampires
Dawn was still a distant promise when they dragged the vampire out of the shadows. The forest preserve had become a battlefield, the earth gouged by claw marks and churned where bodies had fallen. Twisted branches bore fresh blood, leaves crushed under frantic footsteps. In the aftermath, Enzo and Selene had kept running, their lungs raw, the howls of her father's enforcers growing fainter but never disappearing. Cold mist clung to the ground, swallowing their tracks as they finally took shelter in an old abandoned mill on the edge of the woods. The mill's sagging roof let in slivers of moonlight, dust motes swirling in the pale beams, its dilapidated walls echoing with the remnants of long-forgotten whispers and the sharp scent of mildew.
That was where they found him.
Damien Cross.
The vampire lord was chained to a rusted support beam, elegant even in captivity. He sat with his back impossibly straight despite the heavy iron links digging into his wrists, his tailored black shirt torn at the collar. Blood not his own stained the fabric, a stark crimson against the decay surrounding him, and a faint shimmer of supernatural energy clung to his skin like frost. His midnight-black hair framed his face like a dark halo, and his crimson eyes glowed faintly in the mill's dim light, seeming to drink in their presence as he watched them approach hungry, calculating, utterly in control despite his predicament. The metallic tang of spilled blood cut through the scent of mold and rotting wood, prickling at Selene's senses, a reminder of the violence that had led them to this moment.
Enzo's gun was trained on his head before the vampire could speak.
"Damien Cross," Enzo growled, his voice thick with anger and the rumble of something feral. "You've been supplying the rivals with information and silver. Give me one reason I shouldn't put a bullet through your skull right now."
Damien's lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile, revealing a flash of fangs that gleamed like sharpened ivory. The moonlight seemed to pool in his eyes, highlighting the unnatural beauty of his features. His gaze slid past Enzo and locked onto Selene. The moment their eyes met, something shifted in the air, a tension that thrummed like a taut bowstring—primal, electrifying.
A secondary bond sparked.
Selene felt it as a cold flame licking up her spine, unlike Enzo's scorching heat. Darker. Seductive. Ancient. It whispered secrets she'd never known, the language of old magic, stirring something deep within her, a primal recognition that sent shivers through her body. Her wolf sensed it, hackles half-raised, fear, curiosity, and desire all tangled together.
Damien's crimson eyes widened slightly. "Well… this is unexpected." His voice was smooth, like silk draping over steel, inviting yet dangerous. There was a subtle tremor—a rare hint of surprise—for the first time in centuries, perhaps.
Enzo noticed the change immediately. His hand tightened on the gun, knuckles white, a faint tremor betraying the strength of his jealousy. "What the fuck was that?" The jealousy in his tone sliced through the air, sharp enough to draw blood.
Damien chuckled softly, never taking his eyes off Selene. "The prophecy awakens. The Moon's Daughter carries more than one crown. Blood… and Night." His words slid around Selene like a lover's embrace, thick with forbidden promise.
Selene's breath caught. The bond with Enzo flared in jealous response, hot and possessive, clashing violently with the cool, velvet pull coming from Damien. The very idea of a second connection left her feeling dizzy, torn between loyalty and a magnetic attraction she couldn't fully understand. Her heart hammered, two rhythms out of sync in her chest.
Enzo stepped forward, pressing the barrel of his gun against Damien's forehead, a silent promise of violence. "Explain. Now."
Damien didn't flinch. "The old texts speak of four crowns binding the Moon's Daughter to end the eternal war. You're the first, Valenti, blood and brute force. I appear to be the second. Night. Blood and shadow."
He looked at Selene again, his voice dropping to a sensual murmur that wrapped around her like tendrils of smoke. "And I can feel you, little wolf. You feel me too, don't you?"
Selene's thighs clenched involuntarily, the new bond swirling within her like a storm. It was subtler than Enzo's like silk wrapping around steel, but no less powerful. It whispered promises of pleasure, control, and dark seduction, making her pulse race and her skin flush. She caught a faint scent of ancient incense and cold stone, a memory not her own.
Enzo's jealousy exploded through their primary bond. He yanked Selene against his chest, kissing her hard, claiming her in front of the vampire. His tongue invaded her mouth possessively, a reminder of who had claimed her first, of the fire they shared. His hands were rough, desperate, a silent plea for reassurance even as he tried to stake his claim.
When he pulled back, Selene was left breathless, her heart pounding in a chaotic rhythm.
Damien watched them with hooded eyes, a faint smile playing on his lips, almost amused by their display. "Jealousy suits you, mafia prince. But the bond doesn't care about ownership. It only cares about balance. The war to come will not be won by force alone." Shadows seemed to gather at his feet, flickering in the corners of the ruined mill.
Enzo kept one arm locked around Selene while pointing the gun at Damien again, unwavering. "You're going to tell me everything you know about the attacks on my territory. Then I'll decide whether to kill you or use you."
Damien tilted his head, still staring at Selene, and the chains rattled softly. "I'll tell you what you want to know… on one condition."
Enzo's eyes narrowed, his voice low and dangerous. "Name it."
"Let me taste her."
The words hung in the air like smoke, thick with promise and threat. Moonlight seemed to pulse, shadows stretching toward Selene as the new bond tightened its hold.
Selene's pulse spiked, the new bond pulsing in response, sending waves of dark curiosity and unwanted arousal through her veins, complicating her feelings further. She imagined fangs at her throat, the brush of cold lips, a hunger that was more than physical.
Enzo's entire body went rigid with fury, his grip tightening around Selene as a protective instinct surged through him. "Touch her, and I'll tear your heart out."
Damien smiled wider, fangs glinting in the dim light. "Not yet. But soon. The prophecy demands all four crowns. Deny it, and Chicago will drown in blood." His voice dripped with a foreboding certainty that chilled Selene to her core. The wind outside picked up, rattling loose boards, as if the world itself recoiled from his words.
The mill creaked around them, a living entity, as if it bore witness to the ancient conflict unfolding within its walls. Distant howls echoed through the trees once more, a reminder of the danger that lurked outside.
Enzo looked down at Selene, conflict raging in his eyes. The primary bond burned hot with possession, a fierce need to protect. The new one was cool and seductive, waiting patiently, taunting her with the possibilities it brought.
Selene met his gaze, breathing shallow, torn between the two bonds that now held her captive, each promising something wholly different. Her wolf whimpered, caught between the call of blood and the lure of night.
The war was no longer just between families.
It was inside her now.
Things just got more complicated
