Chapter 14: First Attack

The fever had barely begun to cool when hell broke loose.

The penthouse shook violently as the first explosion ripped through the lower floors. Glass shattered. Alarms screamed. The bond between Enzo and Selene flared like a live wire, pulsing with urgency.

Enzo was on his feet instantly, gun already in hand. "Stay behind me," he commanded, voice low and steady.

Selene didn't argue. Instead, she grabbed the knife he'd left on the nightstand, its cool weight a comfort in her palm, and followed him into the chaos, both of them still half-dressed and marked from their earlier collision. The full moon hung heavy in the sky outside the cracked windows, amplifying every instinct within them.

Another explosion sounded, closer this time, rattling the walls and sending a shudder of fear down Selene's spine. The building's emergency lights flickered red, casting ominous shadows that danced across the room.

"They're coming for me," Selene said, her voice tight with a mix of dread and determination. "My father's enforcers. They don't leave witnesses."

Enzo's jaw clenched, his eyes darkening with fierce protectiveness. "Then they'll die trying," he growled, a promise laced in his tone.

The elevator dinged, the sound echoing ominously in the tension-filled air. The doors slid open like the mouth of a predator, and Enzo's grip on his weapon tightened as four heavily armed wolves in tactical gear stormed out. Silver bullets glinted in their weapons, and wolfsbane grenades were clipped to their vests like badges of honor. Their eyes glowed with the same silver as Selene's, bright and predatory.

"Moon's Daughter," the lead enforcer growled, his voice a low rumble filled with malice. "The Alpha demands your return. Alive or in pieces."

Enzo fired first. Two shots echoed in the confined space. Two bodies dropped, lifeless and crumpled.

Chaos erupted.

Selene moved on pure instinct, throwing herself into the fray. She dropped low and slashed at the third attacker's hamstring with the knife, feeling the rush of adrenaline as she drove the blade up under his ribs. The bond surged between her and Enzo, feeding each other speed, strength, and awareness. They fought like they had trained together for years, a well-oiled machine in the midst of a brutal storm.

Enzo put a bullet through the fourth wolf's throat, the sound wet and horrific, then turned and tackled another who had appeared from the stairwell. Selene was right behind him, claws out, tearing into the attacker's side with a ferocity that surprised even herself.

Blood sprayed across the marble floor, a vivid contrast to its polished surface. The scent, hot, metallic, laced with wolfsbane, filled the air, making Selene's stomach churn, but her resolve hardened.

A fifth assailant got lucky. He grabbed Selene from behind, pressing a silver dagger against her throat, the cold metal biting into her skin.

"Drop your weapon, Valenti," he snarled, his breath hot and rancid. "Or I slit her throat and deliver her head to the Alpha myself."

Enzo froze, gun trained on the man's head, his eyes burning with lethal fury. Through the bond, Selene felt his terror not for himself, but for her, and it ignited a fire within her.

Then the attacker laughed, a cruel sound that echoed in the chaos. "The prophecy was right. The Moon's Daughter really has tainted herself with mafia filth."

Selene's blood ran cold.

"What prophecy?" Enzo demanded, his voice low and deadly quiet, a warning rumble that sent chills down Selene's spine.

The enforcer grinned, pressing the silver blade harder until a thin line of blood trickled down Selene's neck, hot and stinging. "The Four Crowns. Blood, Fang, Night, and Shadow. The Moon's Daughter will bind them all… or Chicago burns. Your little whore is the key. And you're just the first crown she's corrupted."

Enzo's finger tightened on the trigger, his resolve palpable.

In one fluid motion, Selene slammed her head back into the attacker's nose, feeling the satisfying crunch of bone. She twisted, driving her claws into his side with a primal scream, the bond between her and Enzo roaring with energy. Enzo fired at the same time, the bullet tearing through the man's skull with a sickening thud.

Silence fell, the sudden hush broken only by the crackling of small fires and distant sirens, the remnants of chaos hanging thick in the air.

Enzo crossed the room in two strides and pulled Selene into his arms, hands frantically checking her for wounds. His fingers came away bloody from the cut on her neck, and his expression twisted with a mix of anger and fear.

"You're hurt," he growled, voice rough with something raw, possessive.

"It's nothing," she whispered, though her hands were shaking as she clutched his shirt, feeling the warmth of his body against her. The bond pulsed between them — stronger than ever. Not just lust anymore. Something deeper. Darker. More terrifying.

Enzo cupped her face, thumb brushing blood from her cheek, the intimacy of the gesture stark against the horror surrounding them. "The Four Crowns," he murmured, his brow furrowed with concern. "What the fuck does that mean?"

Selene looked up at him, silver eyes wide with fear and dawning realization. Her heart raced as she pieced together the implications of the enforcer's words.

"It means this was never just about us," she whispered, the weight of the revelation settling over her like a shroud. "It means there are others. And they're coming."

Outside, the full moon hung blood-red in the sky, foreboding and watchful. The real war had only just begun, and as they stood amidst the remnants of their battle, a new sense of dread took root in Selene's heart. What lay ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: they were no longer just fighting for their lives. They were part of something much larger, a game of power and prophecy that neither of them had anticipated.

As the sirens grew louder, echoing through the night, Selene and Enzo exchanged a determined glance, knowing that whatever awaited them, they would face it together.
