Chapter 68 Already in place

Chapter 68 Already in place
~ Brenda's POV ~

I had been feeling unwell for the past few days, and I kept brushing it off as nothing serious, convincing myself that it was just exhaustion or stress.

However, I soon realized that the uneasy feeling refused to fade, instead, it grew stronger and more persistent until I could no longer ignore it. That was when I decided it was time to stop guessing and finally confirm whether my suspicions about the cause were right or wrong.

So that morning, with my heart pounding loudly in my chest, I dipped the pregnancy test stick into my first urine of the day. My hands trembled slightly as I held it, and I silently begged the moon goddess who might be listening. I hoped with everything in me that by the time I pulled it out, the result staring back at me would be positive.

When I finally lifted the stick, my jaw dropped and my eyes widened in pure shock. For a brief second, I simply stared, afraid that if I blinked the result might change. Then it sank in. My prayers had been answered. I was pregnant.

“Yes. Oh dear goddess, yes. Finally,” I exclaimed, unable to contain my excitement as I bounced on my feet. A rush of relief and triumph washed over me, and I laughed breathlessly. My days of struggling and waiting were almost over. Now, I would finally have Kael all to myself, and the thought alone sent a thrilling warmth through my body that only heightened my excitement.

“Dagan must hear this,” I muttered to myself.

Without wasting another second, I quickly dressed and headed straight for his office, my mind racing with anticipation.

When I was just a short distance away, I heard his voice through the door. He was clearly talking to someone, and it sounded serious.

Normally, I might have waited, but my excitement refused to let me be patient. I did not even bother to knock. I pushed the door open and walked in, only to find him frantically trying to end the call. In his panic, his phone slipped from his hand and fell to the floor with a dull thud.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” he snapped, glaring at me as he bent down to pick up his phone. “Why do you think you have the right to barge into my office like that?”

I frowned deeply, instantly irritated by his tone. “Hey, don't yell at me,” I shot back, my annoyance flaring. “Do you think I would do something like that if I did not have a good reason?” I asked as I walked over and dropped into the chair directly opposite him, my scowl firmly in place.

“It does not matter what your reason is,” he replied sharply. “You would not try that with Kael, so don't do it with me.”

That comment only irritated me further. Why was he suddenly comparing himself to Kael? The comparison felt unnecessary and grating.

“You are not Kael,” I said bluntly. “And I honestly do not know where that comparison came from, but it was completely unnecessary.” I fell silent for a moment, studying him, before speaking again. “Who were you talking to, by the way?”

“How does that concern you?” he asked, irritation flashing in his eyes again. It did nothing to intimidate me.

“Well, it does concern me,” I replied calmly, refusing to back down. “You were in such a hurry to end the call that you dropped your phone. So tell me, are you hiding me from the person you were talking to, or are you hiding that person from me?”

“Mind your business,” he said flatly, and I immediately knew I was not going to get an answer out of him. He sighed and shifted in his chair before looking back at me. “Why are you here? What was so important that you could not wait two seconds to knock?” he asked, his voice softening as the irritation slowly drained from his face.

“That is the first thing you were supposed to ask instead of yelling at me,” I said, pouting slightly and folding my arms, not ready to let the issue go just yet or pretend that his earlier outburst had not annoyed me.

“Well, I am asking now, so spill it,” he replied, his impatience surfacing again as his tone sharpened.

“The deed is done,” I finally said, deciding to abandon the initial argument and go straight to the point. Confusion immediately clouded his face, and I knew from that look alone that he had not understood what I meant. “Do I really have to spell it out for you?” I added, rolling my eyes dramatically.

“Well, obviously, since I am not getting it,” he snapped back.

I stared at him in disbelief. He could not even guess. “Oh man, I thought this was supposed to be a top priority,” I said aloud, my annoyance beginning to bloom. “Now you are sitting there looking like you can't even remember.” My voice carried my frustration because I genuinely could not understand how he could forget something this important.

“Just say it already, Brenda. Time is precious,” he said, and his words made me scowl.

“Fine,” I muttered. “I just found out that I am pregnant.”

The moment the words left my mouth, his eyes widened, and then a slow smile stretched across his lips.

“You are carrying my child,” he said with clear excitement, and my heart did a violent somersault in my chest.

“Stop that rubbish you just said out loud,” I corrected him immediately, my tone sharp. “This child is not yours. It is Kael’s.”

“Kael’s?” he repeated, and his expression shifted into something far more serious. “Will you be able to defend that lie when the time comes?” he asked.

Fear clawed at my chest, and my heart lurched painfully. Why was he suddenly talking like this? Why was he claiming the child after everything we had already agreed on?

“I don't know what has come over you or what is going on in your head, Dagan, but you need to stop,” I said firmly. “This was not our agreement. Do not make me start regretting this.”

For a moment, he only stared at me. Then his face slowly transformed into an amused smile, and his shoulders shook slightly as he suppressed his laughter.

“I was only joking. Don't take things so seriously,” he said lightly. “This is good news, so cheer up.”

“That joke is too expensive, so stop it,” I snapped. “You would not know when you might mistakenly spill information you are not supposed to share among people who have no business knowing it.” I reprimanded him harshly, but instead of taking me seriously, he laughed.

“Calm down,” he said dismissively. “Nothing like that is going to happen. As things stand now, our plan has been solidified.”

“Not yet,” I replied, shaking my head. “You have not told me the next phase or how we are supposed to achieve it.” I reminded him, bringing up the second reason I had rushed to him in the first place. This was the moment he was supposed to give me the complete details of his plan.

“Don't worry. Everything is already in place,” he said confidently. “We just have to wait for Kael to return to the pack house, and then we strike. Rejoice, because we have almost won the battle.” His words were filled with pride and certainty, and they stirred that fluttering feeling back into my heart.
