After being repeatedly struck down by Mia, Garrett finally calmed down from his excitement. He stood silently, his expression unreadable. Seeing this, Mia couldn't quite figure out what he was thinking and was about to say something. Before she could speak, she heard Garrett's cold voice, "No matter what, I'll try to mend my relationship with her first. Besides, we still have what that girl wants."
Upon hearing this, Mia's lips curled up slightly. Her plan to sow discord had succeeded.
The next afternoon, Garrett arrived at the foot of the mountain where Deanna's estate was located, bearing gifts, but was stopped by the security guard.
"Sorry sir, do you have an appointment?"
"I'm your missus's father. Do I need an appointment to see my own daughter?" Garrett looked displeased.
The security guard remained unfazed, "Please cooperate with our procedures."
Seeing the unmoved security guard, Garrett was furious but didn't dare to cause a scene. After all, he came today to mend his relationship with Deanna.
"Alright, I understand." With that, Garrett stopped troubling the guard and turned to call Deanna.
When Deanna received the call, she felt both unsurprised and a bit taken aback. She frowned but answered the phone anyway, "What do you want?"
She knew very well that if she didn't answer, Garrett would keep calling to harass her. It was better to hear what he had to say.
Soon, Garrett's ingratiating voice came through the phone. "Deanna, it's Dad. I'm at the foot of your mountain. Can you ask your security to let me in?"
"What are you here for?" Hearing that Garrett was at the foot of the mountain, Deanna frowned even more tightly, her tone guarded.
Garrett noticed her wariness. Though he was furious inside, he held it back and spoke kindly, "I came to see my two grandchildren. I brought them gifts from abroad."
"You're up to no good, aren't you. Do you think I would believe you?" Deanna sneered and got straight to the point, "What's your real purpose?"
Garrett didn't expect that despite his humble attitude, Deanna would still be so unyielding. His anger flared up. But remembering his goal, he took a deep breath and denied it, "How can you say that? As your father and their grandfather, do I need a reason to visit you?"
Then his tone changed to one of guilt, "All these years, I've wronged you and your mother. I hope you can give me a chance to make it up to you."
Though his words were emotional, Deanna felt nothing. She coldly replied, "If you don't tell me your purpose, I'll hang up."
"Alright, I know you don't want to talk to me now. I'll leave the gifts at the foot of the mountain. Make sure someone brings them up for you. As for my purpose today-your mother left you some shares. Since you're about to marry Mr. Mercer, I thought I'd give them to you as a dowry."
Garrett finally revealed his purpose.
After hearing this, Deanna's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Would you really be so kind?"
"No matter what, I'm still your father. You're marrying into the Mercer family-a prestigious household. Without a substantial dowry, you'd be looked down upon," Garrett said in a tone that seemed considerate of Deanna.
Deanna only felt like laughing. This man had refused to give her those shares before; now he suddenly relented. He must be up to something.
However, she was determined to reclaim what her mother had left her.
With this in mind, Deanna narrowed her eyes. "Alright then, bring the share transfer documents next time and I'll see you."
With that, she hung up the phone.
At the foot of the mountain, Garrett put down his phone with a grim expression. He looked up towards the mountain with anger in his eyes.
That wretched girl really didn't know what was good for her. But no matter how angry he was, he still had to prepare those share transfer documents.
After all, no pay, no gain. Those shares would be temporarily handed over to Deanna; he had ways to get them back in the future.
Deanna didn't know any of this. After hanging up the phone, she felt uneasy and worried that Garrett might cause trouble. Her mood remained heavy all day.
In the evening, when Lance returned home, he immediately noticed something was off with Deanna.
He looked at her with concern and asked, "What's wrong? You seem upset. Who made you angry?"
"Garrett came to see me this afternoon. He said he wanted to return my mother's shares to me. It doesn't feel right no matter how I think about it," Deanna explained without hiding anything.
By the end of her recounting, she couldn't help but worry aloud, "Garrett never does anything without a motive. For him to willingly give up my mother's shares means he must want something big in return. He might even cause trouble at our banquet."
