For the next two days, Samantha and Logan did not appear before the two little ones. They were waiting for the right moment to approach them again without being abrupt.
Finally, on Saturday morning, they saw their chance. Early in the morning, Deanna went to the manor on the hill to tend to the rare herbs. The siblings, bored at home, decided to go downstairs to play.
Old Ashley, busy tidying up the rooms, didn't accompany them but repeatedly reminded, "Don't leave the community, just play in the garden here, okay?"
"Got it," the two little ones replied in their sweet voices and quickly went downstairs.
They arrived at an open area and prepared to play ball. Just as they were having a great time, a delighted voice reached their ears.
"Chloe, Gregory."
Samantha appeared out of nowhere, her eyes shining as she looked at the two little ones. Behind her was Logan, equally joyful. Since their last meeting at the kindergarten, they had bought a house in this community to keep an eye on the two children. However, they hadn't had a chance to see them alone until now, which nearly drove the old couple crazy.
Luckily, their patience paid off. They saw the two little ones with a soccer ball heading to the open space behind the garden.
"It's Grannie and Gramp," Chloe immediately recognized them and greeted them sweetly, her bright eyes still scanning around.
Samantha found her actions adorable and asked with a smile, "What are you looking for, Chloe?"
"I'm looking for Uncle," the little girl replied in her sweet voice but didn't see Lance. Her face showed undisguised disappointment. She wondered if her uncle was very busy since he hadn't visited in the past two days. She missed him a lot.
Samantha didn't know what was on the little girl's mind but felt heartbroken seeing her dim eyes. "Is Chloe missing Uncle Lance?"
"A little. Is Uncle very busy lately?" Chloe didn't deny it and looked at Samantha with hopeful eyes. That innocent gaze melted Samantha's heart, and she quickly said, "Don't worry, your uncle isn't busy today. I'll call him over to play with you later."
"Really?" Chloe's eyes lit up instantly.
Gregory also felt a bit excited but had a strange feeling. He couldn't help but think that their grandparents were being overly kind to them. He pulled his overjoyed sister back a step and innocently asked, "By the way, we haven't asked why Grannie and Gramp are here."
Hearing this and seeing the cautious look in the little boy's eyes, the old couple's expressions stiffened for a moment. They felt both amused and gratified by his vigilance.
"We're here to visit a friend who's been ill recently and whose children aren't around. So we might be coming here often," Logan explained with a smile.
Gregory nodded maturely, sensing no deceit in Logan's words, and asked further, "Are you going back now?"
"We were planning to, but seeing you two, we wanted to play with you for a while. Is that okay?" Samantha seized the opportunity to get closer to the children and didn't want to leave so soon.
Logan felt the same and invited them, "It's the weekend. Would you like to come to our house to play?"
"Thank you for the offer, Gramp, but we promised Great-grandma we'd stay in the community," Gregory quickly declined before his sister could speak.
Chloe pouted unhappily. She wanted to see where her uncle grew up but didn't argue with her brother.
The old couple wasn't surprised by their refusal. In fact, if the children had agreed to leave with them so easily, they would have been worried.
"How about we stay here and play with you?" Samantha suggested another idea.
But as soon as she said this, she noticed her grandson giving her a strange look. Had she said something wrong?
Chloe didn't notice anything amiss and clapped her hands joyfully, "Great! Grannie and Gramp can play soccer with us."
And so, the four of them played in the garden. However, the old couple soon got tired due to their age and had to stop for a rest.
"I can't go on anymore. Chloe, Gregory, you keep playing; I need a break," Logan said, panting heavily.
"I need to rest too," Samantha added.
Seeing this, the two little ones stopped playing despite their reluctance and helped the old couple to a nearby bench.
Then they handed over their thermos cups. "Grannie, Gramp, have some water."
"Good, good!" The old couple smiled broadly as they watched the considerate children take care of them. They felt immensely proud.
The Mercer family's children truly knew how to be considerate!
