Chapter 75
The ceremonial horns sounded, signalling the official opening of the market. Pack members dispersed to their assigned positions, the carefully choreographed movement creating a visual display of harmony for any watching eyes. Nickolas's hand found hers as they descended from the platform, his fingers intertwining with her own in a gesture that conveyed both support and shared purpose.
"That was..." he began, his voice low enough that only she could hear.
"Unexpected," Ioannis finished, her free hand touching the pendant that now rested comfortably warm against her skin. "It wasn't like before, I remained fully myself, just... amplified."
Luna Holland approached before Nickolas could respond, her silver eyes studying Ioannis with newfound intensity. "The Goddess speaks through you with increasing clarity," she observed, keeping her voice carefully controlled despite the wonder Ioannis could see in her expression. "The ancient texts mention such progression, her touch becoming more integrated with her chosen vessel over time."
Ioannis swallowed hard, the implications of her mother's words settling over her like a heavy cloak. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective concern surge, his hand tightening slightly around hers.
"What does that mean for Ioannis?" he asked, his tone respectful but direct.
Luna Holland's expression softened slightly. "It means her path is unfolding as the Goddess intends. The pendant responds to her now, not merely to crisis." She reached out, her fingers hovering just above the silver-blue stone that rested at Ioannis's throat. "It's warming to your natural energy, becoming an extension of your connection rather than a separate conduit."
A small group approached before Ioannis could formulate a response; Federico flanked by the twins, their expressions a mixture of excitement and barely contained mischief.
"Your dramatic flair for ceremonial openings has certainly improved, sister," Federico observed, his formal tone belied by the warmth in his eyes. "Though I believe the twins are taking notes for future 'improvements' to their own projects."
Brodie grinned unrepentantly. “Or perhaps the three of us should just team up, it would just make things more fun, wouldn’t you agree, Luna?”
Ioannis laughed, the sound genuine despite the gravity of their situation. "I'm not sure the Goddess would approve of whatever the three of us might cook up together."
"On the contrary," Luna Holland interjected, her silver eyes warm with unexpected humour. "The ancient texts speak of the Trickster aspect of the Goddess, the side that brings necessary chaos to break old patterns."
The twins exchanged identical looks of delight at this information, their expressions so comically eager that Ioannis felt another laugh bubble up from her chest. Through their bond, she sensed Nickolas's exasperated amusement, tempered with genuine affection for her siblings.
"Don't encourage them," he muttered, though his storm-grey eyes held a hint of mirth.
Federico cleared his throat, his expression shifting to something more serious. "We've received confirmation that our observers are in position at all three facilities mentioned in Marcus's documents. Minimal activity at two, but the northern site shows concerning developments."
Nickolas straightened, his posture subtly shifting to the alert stance Ioannis recognised from their tactical planning sessions. "What kind of developments?"
"Equipment deliveries," Federico replied, keeping his voice low despite the bustling market activity around them. "Laboratory supplies, according to our source. And specialised containment materials."
The pendant at Ioannis's throat cooled slightly, as if responding to the threat this information represented. She touched it absently, drawing comfort from its solid presence as she processed the implications.
"Timeline?" Nickolas asked, his thumb stroking the back of her hand in a gesture too subtle for others to notice.
"Accelerated," Federico confirmed grimly. "Our source estimates they're preparing for test subjects within the week."
Luna Holland's expression hardened, her silver eyes flashing with maternal protectiveness that extended to all her pack. "Then we must accelerate our countermeasures as well."
The twins nodded in perfect unison, their earlier mischief replaced by focused determination. "The diversion packages are ready," Brodie reported. "Deployable on your command."
"Non-explosive," Miles added quickly, catching Nickolas's sharp glance. "Mostly."
"We should discuss this with the council," Ioannis suggested, her gaze moving toward the ceremonial tent where the allied Alphas had gathered after the opening ceremony. "A coordinated response across all territories would be most effective."
Luna Holland nodded in approval, pride evident in her silver eyes. "Always thinking in patterns, my artistic daughter. Yes, a unified approach is essential." She turned to Federico. "Bring your intelligence reports to the council tent in twenty minutes. We'll need complete information before making strategic decisions."
