Chapter 47 Good Riddance
“Mia?” Russell called out, taking a deep breath.
“How long have you been standing there?” He asked, but there was still silence.
Alara could no longer look Mia in the face, gripped by regret.
“I should have kept my mouth shut.” She thought to herself, but it was already too late.
Mia sighed heavily, and with a neutral expression, she inched closer to the Alpha, standing between him and his sister.
First, she looked at Alara, and then she faced the Alpha, her plain expression shifting to a wry smile.
“I am glad she left on her own. I was worried I was going to have to share you with her.” She inched closer, leaving the Alpha and his sister to stare at her with wide eyes.
She sighed heavily, holding onto her beam.
“How that she is out of the way, how are you going to cope? That’s what we should be more focused on, not the good riddance.” She scoffed, her eyes demanding a quick response from the Alpha.
Russell looked at his sister, his eyes sparking with an expression that seemed to be wondering if she had heard the same thing from Mia.
“Russell?” Mia called out, drawing the Alpha’s immediate attention.
Russell shifted his gaze to her, but it had become very hard for him to break his silence, several thoughts running through his mind.
“You still haven’t said anything.” Mia persisted, her evergreen smile unwavering.
“I am your mate now, I should be worried about anything that concerns you. That is why we need to put our heads together and find a way around this.” She turned to Alara, and after a long stare, she was forced to nod in approval, turning to her brother.
“She is right, Russell.” Alara broke her silence, and even when the Alpha arched his brows above his wide eyes, she still nodded.
“We have so many projects at hand, and clearly, you don’t seem like you are interested in whatever is going on in the company”
Russell took a deep breath, and as the thought lingered inside his mind, he was forced to succumb to the feeling that gripped him.
“You have a point.” He whispered, but it was hard to tell who he was referring to, his eyes glancing between Alara and Mia.
“I have to look for someone who can replace Nelly.” He sighed in despair, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Someone competent. Someone…”
“Who will not seduce you...” Mia snapped, rolling his eyes at the Alpha.
Russell cleared his throat, battling the cringe that besieged him.
“Yes.” He nodded reluctantly, his eyes avoiding Mia’s glaring pupils.
“There is that as well…” He muttered, looking at the marble like it was his first time beholding the beauty of the unique golden patterns.
When he eventually lifted his face, his eyes came in contact with Alara’s face, her countenance taunting him secretly.
He was forced to look away, but it didn’t seem like Mia’s face was a better view for him.
Alara cleared her throat, and then she stepped forward, standing in the middle of the Alpha and his mate.
“So…” She took a deep breath, positioning herself to stare properly at the Alpha.
“Where are we going to find a competent Personal Assistant who will not try to seduce the Lycan King?”
“Me.” Mia gave a quick response, pointing to herself.
“You are looking at her.” She added confidently, holding onto her confident smile.
“You?” The Alpha and his sister remarked at the same time, and then they exchanged glances with each other, their eyes spreading to their limits.
“Yes,” Mia nodded to affirm her words, and then she sighed softly.
“I am going to be a competent Personal Assistant to the Lycan King. But I cannot promise that I will not seduce him whenever I get the chance to.” She winked at Russell, and inching closer to him, she caressed his face, rubbing her palm tenderly on his right cheek.
Alara had been rendered speechless, and she was hoping that Russell was going to have something to say.
“Mia…” Russell grunted, shifting his gaze to his mate.
“There is no way that’s going to happen. You can’t be my Personal Assistant.”
“Says who?” Mia retorted at once, and even though her expression had dropped, she was still holding onto her confidence, her left brow arched as she waited for the Alpha to speak.
Russell spent the next few seconds searching for a suitable response to give, and when he found none, he turned to Alara, begging her to intervene.
“Mia…” Alara was quick to the rescue, inching closer to Mia.
“I don’t think you understand what my brother is trying to say.” She cleared her throat, and then she continued with a more audible tone, trying to demonstrate with her hands.
“It is demeaning for the Alpha’s mate to work as his Personal Assistant. That role is reserved for subjects, and mostly Humans.”
“But I am not complaining,” Mia argued, expressing her unpreparedness to budge.
“I worked in Darrell’s company as an intern, and I received the honor of the best employee for three consecutive months. I am the best person for this job,”
“No, Mia.” Russell shook his head slowly, his eyes sparking with disapproval.
“There is no way I am reducing you to one of the employees in my company. Maybe I could have considered you a partner if you had a company or business of your own. Not my Personal Assistant…” He grunted, shaking his head at the thought that crept into his mind.
“I can’t have you carrying my files, replying to my emails, and calling my clients and potential investors just to beg them to do business with us.”
Mia sniggered. “That’s all you are worried about…”
“Yes, Mia.” Russell grabbed Mia’s shoulders pulling her closer to himself.
“Think about something else.” He pleaded, looking her in the eyes.
Mia took a deep breath, and just when the Alpha thought that he had been able to convince her, she shook her head, getting a hold of her firm resolve.
“No, Alpha Russell Hamilton.” She whispered, causing the Alpha to gasp.
“There is no way I am letting any other seductress rub their claws on you. It is either you let me work for you, or no one else is going to do that.”
Mia took a deep breath, turning to glance at Alara who looked away at once.
“Excuse me.” She sighed heavily, and with a wry smile, she walked away, leaving the Alpha and his sister to stare at him until she was out of sight.
