Chapter 60 | The New World | Kael
The Reform's Implementation: Both Thrilling and Draining
New laws need to be written. Old systems need to be torn down. The Suppressor program is officially shut down, with thousands of devices collected and destroyed. The Academy curriculum is being revised to get rid of bloodline-based separation. Housing, jobs, social services—everything is being rebuilt to match the new equality.
Leah throws herself into the work with her usual drive. She meets with former Nullblood students, helping them adjust to their new status and their newly awakened bloodlines. She works with teachers on curriculum changes. She teams up with Kieran on policy implementation, learning politics through hands-on experience.
I focus on security. The reform has made enemies. Conservative students attack reformist classmates. Pureblood parents pull their kids out of the academy. Lord Frost's allies organize protests, hand out propaganda, do everything except outright violence to tear down the new order.
"It's working," Leah says one evening as we go over the week's progress. "Slowly, messily, but it's working."
"Academy enrollment is up twenty percent," I report. "Former Nullbloods applying for the first time. Former Halfbloods transferring from lower-ranked schools."
"And the violence?"
"Going down." I put down the report. "The security measures are working. And—" I pause, "—your presence helps. Seeing the Progenitor's heir working alongside them, treating them as equals—it changes people's minds."
She smiles, tired but satisfied. "Then I'll keep at it."
"You need to rest too. The baby—"
"Is fine." She puts her hand on her belly, now showing a clear curve. "The healer says everything is going normally."
I move behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist, resting my chin on her shoulder. Through the bond, I can feel the child—a faint, steady pulse of new life. Our life.
"Four months," I whisper. "Halfway there."
"Four months," she echoes. "Kael, are we ready?"
"For the child?"
"For everything. The child. The reform. The enemies still out there." She turns in my arms to face me, her honey-brown eyes serious. "Are we ready for what's coming?"
I look at her. At this woman who has changed from a scared girl into a leader, a symbol, a force of nature. And I realize the answer doesn't matter. Ready or not, we're doing this. Together.
"We're ready," I say. "Because we're together."
She kisses me. Soft, lingering, tasting of bloodrose tea and determination.
The fire burns low in the fireplace. The world outside keeps spinning, full of challenges and dangers and unknowns. But here in the Owlspire, in this moment, we have peace.
A peace we fought for. A peace we earned. A peace we will protect, together, for all the days ahead.
