Fire at Shopehouse

"Rose! What happened? How did our shophouse catch fire?" Romeo was shocked to see the remains of the fire that was still burning in the building. Romeo's body staggered, he almost fell when Dulce's hand quickly grabbed him. Dulce, who was no less surprised, immediately brought the old man to sit on the edge of the sidewalk. The immigrant woman sat beside Romeo with a body that was no less shaking. "How could it be?" Rose hissed in disbelief. Everything she owns, the house where his family takes refuge and her livelihood is there. Rose stared frozen frozen at the blackened building with Kenzie still in her arms. It was nine o'clock in the evening when the fire broke out. They had just arrived from dinner at a restaurant, when they found out that the shophouse had sold out. Rose could barely get out of the taxi when she saw a fire engine spraying water on her shophouse building. The cold night without a place to stay with a small child and parents in charge, made Rose very depressed. Rose still couldn't unite her body with the soul that was currently floating somewhere. "How could it be …." Her lips trembled with trembling tears dripping from his eyes. Kenzie twisted his body nervously in Rose's arms, bringing her back to her senses, if she had to act quickly. It was not her herself who was currently reeling, but there were other responsibilities. Rose brought Kenzie to Dulce. "P--please take care of Kenzie and Daddy." She stammered. "Rose …" Romeo's voice whispered in Rose's ear who was trying to stay strong. "Relax here, Dad. Rose will find out what happened." Rose held her father's hand. He felt very sad when he felt how cold Romeo's hands were. Rose trotted over to the firefighters who almost managed to beat the red hero. "Don't come any closer, Miss, it's dangerous." The officer blocked Rose who he thought was about to approach the fire. "I--I occupied the building. W--what happened, Sir?" Rose haltingly asked. "You own it?" said the officer probing. "I--I rented the building, sir." said Rose, trembling. Before the firefighters could answer, there was an angry scream from another direction aimed at Rose. "Why did you burn my building! I want compensation!" a middle-aged woman pointed at Rose full of anger. "I-I didn't set the building on fire, Mrs Benson." said Rose softly at the woman who was still glaring at her with a reddened face full of hatred. "I don't care! You have to pay for it. Oh my God, how could you do that? From the start you rented this building I was suspicious. Your sister who was pregnant out of wedlock, your father had a stroke and you were left by a lover. Oooo … should be I know you're a family of jinxes!" Mrs. Benson kept screaming while Rose was crying. The girl was shaken by what had happened, not to mention the accusations from Mrs Benson. "Enough, madam. Please don't insult my family." Rose felt her ears burning with all of her insults. Not yet finished feeling sad when all the possessions and memories she had in the shop were burned down, several tenants of the surrounding buildings came and were rude to her. "You want to kill us all?" shouted a man loudly. "Fortunately a fire brigade passed by, otherwise our shophouse would have been burnt to the ground! What a useless woman!" another shouted. "Hey! Because of you my customer ran away, you have to compensate." they said without anyone sympathizing with his plight. Rose's body shivered with the sadness and anger that was raging in her heart. How could all the neighbors he always helped end up attacking him mercilessly. "You guys get out of the way, we can't say for sure if the fire was the result of this young miss's negligence." A firefighter led Rose away from the crowd of people screaming in anger. "Are you all right, Miss?" asked the officer who felt sympathy. Rose shook her head and looked at the middle-aged man with tear-filled eyes. "Sir, do you have a blanket for daddy and my son?" Rose realized that the colder nights would not be good for their health. "Wait here." After a while he gave two blankets to Rose. The girl immediately ran past the people who were still booing her. "Dulce, please cover Kenzie." Rose gave a blanket to Dulce and put another one over Romeo's body. "Rosee… is it all over?" asked Romeo sadly. The man then coughed. "I don't know, Dad. I can't be sure, just be patient for a moment. I will immediately take you to the inn," said Rose quietly. "Do we have money?" Romeo's soft words made Rose feel very sad. "I'll be back, Dad." Rose rushed to the firefighters to see if anything could be saved. "Master, how is it?" "Don't go in yet, Miss. Let our officers see if there's still any fire left in the house and also check to find out the cause of the fire." The fire chief prevented Rose from getting any closer. Rose hugged herself with misty eyes staring at her blackened shop. The woman's face was pale, her nose was red and her eyes were swollen. In fact, Rose's legs felt weak, but she braced herself to stay strong to face all of this. Rose opened the small bag that slung over her shoulder. She saw that she had no more than two hundred dollars in cash left. In the bag, Rose glanced at the atm which she realized did not contain much money there. All the Cash that he had was left in the building. Rose could only hope that the securities and the remaining cash wouldn't burn. "Miss, you can take your family to find an inn, the inspection won't be finished in an hour." Rose weakly nodded, agreeing to the officer's suggestion. The poor girl walked with unsteady steps and her head lowered. Rose didn't know what to do next. How did she compensate for the burning shophouse, Kenzie's clothes and uniforms which must have been completely burnt, not to mention the contents of the minimarket, which had not been fully paid for. Rose's head felt heavy at the memory. "Hey! What are you doing?" Rose screamed and immediately ran fast when she saw the figure she hated so much approaching Dulce and about to take Kenzie. "Rose." The cold voice called out his name. "Don't touch my son!" shouted Rose furiously. Even though her body was weak and her heart was in turmoil, Rose still had the strength to defend her only Ruby legacy. "I'll take her, Rose. Look at how you are, you won't be able to take care of Kenzie anymore." A cynical smile crept on the corners of Robert's lips. "He's my son! He's my son! Go youuuu!" shouted Rose hysterically. All eyes turned to them due to Rose's loud scream, making Robert immediately bury the hat he was wearing. The man growled in annoyance and was forced to walk away from Rose when he saw several firefighters walking toward them. Robert could not allow a scandal to tarnish his reputation.
