Chapter 33 Wife-cursing Fate

Chapter 33 Wife-cursing Fate

Matilda sat in the car today, barely daring to breathe too loudly.

This was the hospital director's car. The director sat beside her, and the associate director sat in the front passenger seat. She was just a regular doctor, feeling nervous inside.

Director Francis Stewart made small talk with her from time to time: "Dr. Spencer, where are you living now?"

"I'm living... at my boyfriend's place."

"Oh, is your boyfriend treating you well?"

"Pretty... pretty well."

"You know, we have so many young, single male doctors at our hospital. Why did you suddenly find someone from outside? If you'd waited a bit longer, I would've wanted to set you up with someone."

"Dr. Stewart, you're too kind."

"I heard there was some misunderstanding between you and Addie and Dr. Morris before. Don't take it to heart. Addie is just a bit headstrong. I've spoiled her since she was little, but she's actually not bad."

"Okay, I understand."

Matilda thought to herself, 'This kind of person is called "not bad"? Francis really spoils his daughter too much, doesn't he?'

Good thing she didn't expose Adalyn yesterday, or she might have lost her job. Besides, even if she had exposed her, Francis probably wouldn't have believed it. And even if he did, he'd just think his daughter was "playing around" and wouldn't take it seriously.

Soon, they arrived at Kensington BioTech Company headquarters.

As soon as they entered, Matilda felt the company looked really impressive, with both a high-end biotech atmosphere and a futuristic feel.

For example, right at the entrance was a holographic body scanner that would automatically analyze your body data as you walked past.

When Julius walked through, a female voice announced: "Male, height 5 feet 6 inches, weight 150 pounds... Um, have you been drinking recently? And quite a bit too."

Julius felt embarrassed immediately.

When Francis walked through, the machine announced: "Male, height 6 feet, weight 174 pounds... Your blood pressure is a bit high, and your heart rate is unstable. Please watch out for heart disease."

Francis just shook his head with a smile.

When it was Matilda's turn, the machine announced: "Female, height 5 feet 5 inches, weight 105 pounds... Bust 34 inches, waist 24 inches, hips 34 inches... What a beauty!"

Matilda was speechless.

What kind of perverted machine is this?

The receptionist led them to the conference room next to the general manager's office.

After waiting a while, the company's general manager, Sawyer Turner, came out.

After greeting Francis and Julius, his gaze lingered on Matilda for a few seconds.

"You must be Dr. Spencer? My daughter came home last night and kept praising you, saying you're a very brave woman who protects the weak."

Matilda quickly said, "Mr. Turner, you're too kind. That day was just a small favor."

Soon, they got to discussing the partnership.

Sawyer emphasized: "Based on qualifications, your hospital wouldn't normally be in line for this equipment, but I'm a father, and fathers can't help being partial. My daughter recommended you so highly, and that's a wonderful connection. For Dr. Spencer's sake, this machine goes to your hospital. We can start signing the contract right now."

Francis and Julius hadn't expected the equipment deal to go so smoothly. They were grinning from ear to ear.

Before signing the contract, Sawyer left to handle other business, and his female assistant brought over the contract.

Julius casually asked: "What about that Mr. Weaver from your company?"

The female assistant said, "Oh, Mr. Weaver? He was sent to Africa."

Julius was surprised. "Why would he go to Africa?"

The female assistant shrugged. "Not too sure, seems like he got into some trouble. He left on a flight last night at midnight."

Matilda was shocked too.

Could it be because of her?

Zoey was so good to her. Knowing Ray was a bad person, she had her father transfer him to Africa to do infrastructure aid work. This was just like a plot from a CEO romance novel.

Still, Ray deserved it.

……

Sawyer returned to his office and called Kai from The Gonzaga Group.

"Mr. White, it's handled. Ray Weaver was sent to Africa for infrastructure relief work, and the equipment was approved for Harmony Health Center, with emphasis on Dr. Spencer's contribution."

Kai said, "Ask Dr. Spencer privately if she'd be willing to come work at your Kensington BioTech Company and take over Ray's position."

Sawyer hesitated a bit. "She's just a young woman. This position has a lot of pressure."

"Don't you have your guidance?"

"Alright, I'll ask her."

After signing the contract, Matilda followed Francis and Julius out of the company, but was stopped by Sawyer.

Right in front of them, he directly tried to recruit her.

"Dr. Spencer, my daughter asked me to ask you if you'd be interested in working at my company?"

"Work here...?" Matilda was stunned for a moment.

"Ray's not here now, so you could take his position."

Matilda almost bit her tongue and quickly waved her hands: "No, no, I only studied medicine. I don't understand all this biotech stuff. I'd better go back to being a doctor. I appreciate Zoey's kind offer."

Sawyer said, "Think about it. I'll give you a week."

"Really, no need to think about it, really!" Matilda said hurriedly.

In the car, she explained to Francis: "Mr. Turner's daughter is just a young girl. You can't take her words too seriously. I'm not planning to change jobs."

Francis smiled and said: "Mr. Turner really dotes on his daughter. Compared to him, I'm way behind. Looks like I need to be even better to Addie in the future."

Matilda fell silent.

……

"What? That equipment deal is already done, and it's thanks to Matilda?"

At lunch, Adalyn heard this from Reuben and was so angry she almost broke her fork.

Reuben said, "Our director said Matilda saved Mr. Turner's daughter, so that's why the deal went through."

Adalyn said angrily, "This Matilda, how does she keep running into these people wherever she goes?"

Reuben also found it strange.

Since Matilda left him, her life seemed to be going much better—she got a Range Rover, someone dealt with her awful mother, her awful brother went to prison, and she even got to know a big company heir.

Could he have a "wife-cursing fate"?

Thinking about it, Reuben shook his head.

He definitely didn't.

……

After work, Matilda was shopping at the supermarket downstairs from her apartment complex.

A few old ladies were chatting: "...This Sunshine Community is great and all, but the property management fees are too high. My son has to pay over four hundred dollars in management fees every month."

"Yeah, the community my daughter bought into also has elevators, but the property fees are cheaper than ours."

"The housing prices here are so high too. My son still has over a hundred thousand dollars left on his mortgage. He has to pay the bank over five hundred dollars every month."

Matilda was stunned listening to this.

……

Dinner time.

Today's meal was still made by Wentworth.

A bowl of clam chowder, a plate of roasted beef brisket, and half a roasted chicken.

Wentworth had a big appetite. Every meal he'd have several big spoonfuls of mashed potatoes and could finish almost all the meat.

Matilda picked up a piece of beef brisket.

Wentworth made this dish often, saying he ate it frequently in the military.

She used to not like fatty meat, but Wentworth made it really well—tender and flavorful, even better than restaurant versions.

As she ate, she asked Wentworth: "Wentworth, I heard the property management fees here are pretty expensive. If you add in utilities, it's probably four or five hundred dollars a month here, right?"
