Chapter 9 Secrets of the Vampire Realm
Selena slipped out of the mansion, her heart thrumming with excitement as the crisp night air wrapped around her. The estate lights cast long shadows on the driveway, but she barely noticed, her phone pressed to her ear.
“Lilith, I told my uncle I was going to the city library for research.” She grinned, adjusting the strap of her purse as she waited for Michael’s car.
A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end. “Are you kidding me? And he actually let you go?”
Selena let out a small laugh. “Surprisingly, yes.”
“He didn’t ask who you were going with? Or what you were researching?” Lilith’s voice dropped to a whisper, laced with suspicion.
Selena hesitated. Now that she thought about it, her uncle’s reaction had been…odd. He was never the type to let her roam freely, let alone leave at night.
“No, he just agreed,” she admitted, her brows knitting together. “I told him it was for research, and he didn’t question it.”
A heavy silence filled the line before Lilith exhaled sharply. “This doesn’t sit right. The uncle I know would never let you go that easily. Be careful, Selena. And whatever you do, don’t go poking around about vampires. You know the rumors.”
Selena rolled her eyes. “Lilith, you seriously need to stop watching vampire movies. They’re messing with your head.” She glanced up as twin headlights cut through the darkness. “I see Michael’s car. We’ll talk later.”
Hanging up, she waved at the sleek Rolls-Royce as it slowed to a stop. The soft glow of the interior lights illuminated Michael’s familiar smirk as he pushed open the door.
“New car?” Selena asked, sliding into the leather seat, her fingers grazing the pristine dashboard.
Michael chuckled, steering the car smoothly onto the road. “Yeah. My dad’s latest toy. Told him I needed it tonight—to impress my woman.”
Heat rushed to Selena’s cheeks as he reached over, fingers trailing gently against her skin.

The City Library
The scent of old paper and polished wood greeted them as they stepped inside the dimly lit library. The towering bookshelves cast eerie shadows, stretching toward the high ceiling like silent watchers.
The librarian, a middle-aged woman with wire-rimmed glasses, barely glanced up from her desk as they approached.
Selena plastered on a polite smile. “Hi.”
The woman looked up. “Good evening. How can I help you?”
Selena leaned in slightly. “I’m looking for books on vampire history.”
A strange stillness settled over the librarian’s face, her fingers pausing mid-page. She regarded Selena with quiet scrutiny before finally speaking. “No one has asked for that section in… a long time.”
The way she said it sent a flicker of unease through Selena’s chest.
Quickly, she pulled out her company ID and held it up. “I’m a reporter. Just doing some research.”
The librarian hesitated for a moment longer, then nodded toward a darkened aisle. “Far end. Right-hand side.”
As Selena and Michael turned to leave, the librarian called out, her voice softer now. “Be careful. Some books hold truths better left undiscovered.”

The vampire section felt… untouched. The shelves were lined with dust-coated books, their spines faded, their covers brittle with age. The silence here was heavier, thick with something unspoken.
Michael leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear. “Okay, tell me the real reason you’re suddenly interested in vampires.”
Selena’s fingers ghosted over the rough cover of an old book as she smiled. “It’s something my mom used to talk about. I just want to know if there’s any truth to it.”
“We could Google it, you know.”
“No.” Her voice was firm. “The library has secrets the internet doesn’t.”
Something black on the floor caught her eye. She crouched, brushing her fingers over a thick, leather-bound book. A peculiar chill ran up her spine as she read the title aloud.
“THE SECRET OF THE VAMPIRE REALM.”
Michael arched a brow. “Think it’s real?”
Selena hesitated. “I don’t know. But I want to find out.”
As Michael wandered off in search of more books, Selena sat cross-legged on the floor, pulling the heavy tome onto her lap. When she tried to pry it open, the cover wouldn’t budge.
Frowning, she ran her fingers over the strange inscription burned into the leather.
"A DROP OF BLOOD IS NEEDED TO OPEN IT."
Her pulse stuttered.
Blood?
The rational part of her screamed to put it back, but curiosity clawed its way forward, drowning out the warning bells in her mind.
Taking a deep breath, she brought her fingertip to her lips and bit down, wincing as the sharp sting blossomed. A single drop of crimson welled up, trailing down her skin.
Slowly, she pressed her finger against the center of the book.
A whisper of air curled around her, like an exhale from something unseen. The cover shuddered—then, as if recognizing the offering, the book groaned open.
The pages inside weren’t in English. Strange, curling symbols danced across the parchment, glowing faintly under the dim library lights.
Selena’s breath hitched.
Before she could react, the silence in the room thickened.
A footstep echoed.
She looked up sharply. “Michael?”
No answer.
Her heartbeat pounded against her ribs as she glanced around. The library was empty except for the whisper of approaching footsteps, slow and deliberate.
A cold presence settled behind her.
Selena turned, her breath catching in her throat.
An old man stood there, his cane tapping softly against the wooden floor. His skin was pale, stretched tight over sharp cheekbones, his silver eyes gleaming unnaturally in the dim light.
His gaze flickered to the book in her hands. “I see you wish to know more about vampires.” His voice was smooth, yet laced with something ancient. “So much so that you were willing to spill your own blood.”
A shudder ran through Selena’s body.
“Who… who are you?”
A slow, knowing smile curled his lips. “You look like your mother.” He tilted his head. “But you have your father’s eyes.”
Selena’s breath hitched. “You knew my father?”
His smile widened. “I still do. If you wish to meet him, I can take you to him now.”
Her blood ran cold.
Lilith’s words crashed back into her mind vampires exist. The library holds secrets.
Was he one of them?
She fought to steady her voice. “I—I can’t. I need my friend.”
The man chuckled. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back before he even notices you were gone.”
The air seemed to shift, the weight of something unseen pressing against her.
Selena hesitated, torn between fear and the unanswered questions clawing at her mind.
She wanted to know the truth.
Her fingers tightened around the book.
"Okay. Let’s go."
