Chapter 135: Selena Moves
The monitoring team's report was four lines long.
Selena had been in the adjacent breakout room during Eze's statement, visible through the glass partition that separated the two spaces, positioned in a way that gave her a clear sightline to the main session room without placing her within it. She had watched Eze speak from that position with the expression of someone observing an event they had anticipated and had built their strategy around, and the four-line report described what the monitoring team had observed in her face during the fourteen minutes as a progression that moved from controlled attention through something that registered as calculation and arrived, in the final minutes, at an expression that the monitoring team's language described as destabilized.
Nadia read the report in the corridor and handed the device back to Damian without speaking. She had felt something similar when she watched Selena's face across the reception area that morning, the eye contact that had communicated awareness and adjustment. Selena had been expecting Eze's testimony to arrive through a different mechanism, through Victor's controlled media release, in a context she had prepared for and around which she had built the timing of her own share movement. The forum proceeding was not the mechanism she had planned for. The admissibility confirmation from the panel chair was not something her strategy had accounted for, because the strategy had been built around a disclosure she could observe and respond to rather than one that became formal record before the response could be calibrated.
The ground had shifted under her in the fourteen minutes Eze had been speaking.
And Selena, Nadia understood, was not a person who remained destabilized for long.
The share movement began at eleven fifty-four.
Damian's legal team flagged it within minutes of its initiation, the notification arriving on his device as they were moving back toward the main forum area for the midday session. The movement was being executed through the same nominee structure that had characterized the four-year acquisition strategy, which meant it had been prepared in advance and was being triggered now rather than assembled in response to the morning's events. Selena had not improvised this. She had accelerated it.
The movement targeted two of the three uncommitted board members present at the forum. Not through the share structure directly, shares did not move that quickly or with that kind of personal precision, but through the proxy commitment mechanism that her network had been building relationships toward for months. Two individuals connected to the uncommitted board members' professional networks were simultaneously exercising proxy commitments that had been secured through private agreements whose terms had never been publicly disclosed.
The mathematics shifted in real time on Damian's device as the legal team updated the shareholder calculation with each new commitment that came through. Nadia watched the numbers over his shoulder with the focused attention of someone tracking a situation that was moving faster than the operational response could comfortably match.
Then the provisional suspension of Osei's proxy held.
The legal team's confirmation arrived mid-movement, a single line that communicated the continuing validity of the provisional finding and its effect on the calculation. With Osei's proxy suspended, the two new commitments Selena had secured moved the mathematics closer to the removal threshold but did not reach it. The margin was narrow enough to be uncomfortable. It was not narrow enough to be critical.
Damian looked at the updated calculation with the expression of someone confirming a number they needed to confirm before they could proceed with anything else. Then he looked at Nadia.
"She is three commitments short," he said quietly.
"With the third board member still uncommitted," Nadia replied.
They looked at each other across the implication of that. Adegbite, the third uncommitted board member, had not yet been secured by either side. He was the operative variable in the shareholder mathematics and he was somewhere in the forum building with the particular value of someone who did not yet know how much their decision was worth.
Damian's device showed the share movement notification update again, and he read it and his expression changed in the way it changed when something arrived that he had been expecting and was glad to receive. He looked at the device and then at Nadia and then across the main forum area toward a point she followed his gaze to.
Adegbite was moving toward them.
Not toward Damian specifically. Toward both of them, his trajectory crossing the room with the purposeful quality of someone who had made a decision during the midday session and was acting on it before the momentum of the decision could be interrupted by the reconsideration that delay always invited.
He reached them and extended his hand to Damian and then to Nadia, and the handshake he offered was not the formal handshake of professional acquaintance but the deliberate handshake of someone communicating a commitment through the gesture rather than waiting to communicate it through words.
"I would like to confirm my position formally," he said. "Through the appropriate channel and at the appropriate time. But I wanted you both to know before that process begins."
Damian received this with the composed directness that he brought to significant moments, neither performing gratitude nor understating the significance of what had just been offered. "We appreciate it," he said simply.
Adegbite nodded and moved back into the room, and Nadia watched him go with the particular feeling of a piece settling into a position that changed the shape of everything surrounding it.
Then Damian's expression shifted.
She followed his gaze across the forum floor and saw Victor's representative moving through the crowd with the purposeful directness of someone executing a specific instruction on a specific timeline, crossing the space between the forum's main entrance and the area where Nadia was standing with the efficiency of someone for whom the crowd was an obstacle to be navigated rather than a gathering to be participated in.
The security detail had not yet repositioned from the breakout corridor.
Nadia stood her ground and watched the representative come.
