Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Hidden Doubts
Seth looked like he wanted to argue, but one look at our father's face stopped him. He and Elena filed out, leaving Damon standing at the bedside.
"Sit," Gabriel instructed, gesturing to chairs positioned nearby. What I'm about to tell you... it changes everything."
My father's eyes found mine, full of regret and love and terrible secrets. "Kira, I've lied to you your entire life. Not out of cruelty, but out of necessity. To protect you from a truth that could destroy you—or save you."
"Dad, what are you talking about?"
"Your mother. Annabelle. Everything you know about her death is true—she died in what appeared to be a rogue attack when you were six months old. But the reason for that attack, the truth about who she really was..." He paused, struggling for breath. "She fled Marcus Voss's territory because he wanted to use a family relic for power. A moonstone amulet buried beneath our pack lands, capable of dominating other packs, controlling bonds, enhancing wolves beyond natural limits."
The room tilted. "What?"
"Annabelle was Marcus's sister. Your mother was a Voss, Kira. Which makes Marcus your uncle by blood."
The words hit like physical blows. I felt the shock through my heart.
"That's not possible," I whispered. "You would have told me—"
"I couldn't. Don't you see? I never dared to. The amulet recognizes bloodline—it chooses its bearer. You're the key to claiming it or destroying it." Gabriel's breathing was labored now. "I killed her to keep it hidden. To protect you."
My world shattered. Every truth I'd built my life on crumbled into lies and terrible revelations.
"You killed my mother?" The words came out strangled.
"No—God, no. Marcus killed her. He found out she'd fled with the location of the amulet, that she'd rather die than let him use it. He sent the rogues that tore her apart." Tears streamed down my father's weathered face. "I failed to protect her. But I swore I wouldn't fail you."
He reached beneath his pillow with shaking hands, producing a small silver key. "This opens the burial site. The amulet is there, has been for twenty-eight years. I buried it where only someone of Voss blood could access it—where you could access it, if you choose to."
"Why are you telling me this now?" My voice broke.
"Because I'm dying. Because Marcus is getting closer to the truth. Because you need to make a choice." He pressed the key into my palm. "Don't let Marcus have it. It will consume everything, everyone. But don't let it consume you either. The amulet chooses its bearer, Kira. It's tied to blood, to power, to the worst impulses of our kind."
I stared at the key, feeling its weight like destiny itself pressing down on my shoulders.
"There's more," Gabriel continued, and I couldn't imagine what could be worse. "You're not my biological daughter."
Time stopped.
"Your mother came to me already pregnant when she fled Marcus. I loved her, claimed you as mine, raised you as my heir. But your father..." He swallowed hard. "I never knew who he was. Annabelle never told me. She said it was safer that way, that knowing would put you in more danger."
I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Every foundation of my identity was being ripped away.
"Seth is your half-brother through me. But you, Kira—your bloodline is Voss. Completely. That's why the relic would recognize you. That's why you're the key to everything." But please, understand—everything I did was to protect you. To give you a chance at life, at happiness, at being more than a pawn in Marcus's games."
"Did you ever love me?" I asked, voice breaking. "As your daughter? Or was I just... just a tool? A way to keep the relic hidden?"
"I loved you from the moment Annabelle placed you in my arms." His voice was fierce despite his weakness. "You were never a tool, never a burden. You were my daughter in every way that mattered. Blood doesn't make family, Kira. Love does. Choice does. And I chose you every single day."
The sincerity in his eyes broke something open in my chest. I moved to his bedside, taking his frail hand in mine.
"I forgive you," I whispered through tears. "I don't understand it all yet, and I'm so angry, but I forgive you."
Damon couldn’t bear it as he opened the door and came in, putting his arms around me as I started to shake. Through the bond, I felt his steady presence, anchoring me when everything else was spinning out of control.
"I know this is devastating," Gabriel said softly. "I know you feel pained by your father's sickness, not knowing what was revealed.
"Protect the pack," he said urgently, his grip surprisingly strong. "Protect the relic. Don't let it fall into the wrong hands. Promise me."
"I promise."
His eyes shifted to Damon. "Take care of her. She's stronger than she knows, but she'll need someone to lean on. Can you do that?"
"With my life," Damon said without hesitation.
Gabriel smiled weakly. "Good. Now get out, both of you. Let an old man rest."
As we stood to leave, he called out once more: "Kira? Your mother would be proud of who you've become. Never doubt that."
Outside the room, I collapsed against the wall, unable to hold back the sobs anymore. Damon pulled me close, his arms a fortress against the chaos threatening to consume me.
"Whatever comes," he murmured into my hair, "you're not facing it alone. I meant what I said in there. I'm with you. Always."
Through the bond, I felt his absolute certainty, his unwavering support. It didn't fix the revelations, didn't make the pain disappear, but it gave me something solid to hold onto when everything else was crumbling.
Seth and Elena waited at the end of the hallway, their expressions questioning. But before I could explain anything, a pack runner burst through the entrance, face pale with urgency.
"Alpha Gabriel! We need—" He spotted us and redirected. "Miss Kira, Alpha Damon—there's an emergency pack meeting called. Elder Matthew is demanding immediate succession discussions. He says with Alpha Gabriel's illness being terminal, we need a clear line of leadership now."
"Now?" I said incredulously. "My father is still alive—"
"I know, but the elders are concerned. The pack is fracturing. They want answers."
Damon's jaw tightened. "Then let's give them answers."
The meeting hall was packed when we arrived, dozens of Crescent Vale wolves murmuring anxiously. Elder Matthew stood at the front, his weathered face grave. When he saw us enter, he raised his hand for silence.
"Kira Thorne," he began formally. "We've received word that Alpha Gabriel's condition is irreversible. While we respect his leadership and pray for his comfort, we must face reality. This pack needs a successor. Someone experienced, capable of leading us through the war that's coming."
Every eye turned to me. The weight of expectations, of pack tradition, of my father's revelations pressing down like physical force.
"The rightful heir should take the lead if anything happens," I said carefully, my voice carrying across the hall. "Seth Thorne is Gabriel's son and a capable warrior. He would be suitable for that role."
Murmurs erupted. Seth's eyes widened in shock, meeting mine across the crowded room.
Elder Matthew frowned. "With all respect, Miss Kira, you've been Alpha Gabriel's right hand for years. You know the pack's operations, our alliances, our strategies. Seth is young, untested in leadership—" he said that not in support of me taking over, but to create more confusion.
"He's ready," I interrupted. "And he's a Thorne by blood. That matters."
The emphasis on 'by blood' made Seth's expression shift to confusion. He didn't know yet. Didn't know what our father had just revealed.
"The pack's future is secure," I continued. "Seth will lead when the time comes. I have faith in him."
The elders exchanged uncertain glances, but the decision had been made public. As the meeting dissolved into smaller discussions, Seth pulled me aside.
"What the hell was that?" he hissed. "You're the heir, Kira. Everyone knows it. Why throw it to me?"
I looked at my half-brother, seeing him with new eyes. "Because you deserve it. Because you're Gabriel's true son. And because I have other responsibilities now."
"This is about the alliance, isn't it? About Damon?"
"It's about a lot of things." I touched the locket around my neck, feeling its strange warmth against my skin. "Things I'll explain when the time is right. For now, just trust me. You're ready for this, Seth. More ready than you know."
As we prepared to leave Crescent Vale, my father's revelations echoing in my mind, I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to change. The key burned in my pocket, a constant reminder of secrets buried and bloodlines revealed.
Marcus Voss wasn't just my enemy anymore.
He was family.
And I had no idea what that meant for the war to come.
