Chapter 54
Brenda’s POV
The mansion felt different when we came back upstairs.
It wasn’t just the damage—though there was plenty of that.
Broken glass scattered across the floors.
Furniture pushed out of place.
The faint smell of smoke and blood still lingering in the air.
No…
It was something deeper than that.
Something you couldn’t see—but could feel.
The silence.
It wasn’t peaceful.
It wasn’t comforting but heavy.
Like the walls themselves had witnessed everything that had happened… and hadn’t yet decided how to forget it.
It felt like the kind of quiet that came after something terrible.
The kind that settled in slowly, pressing down on everything until even breathing felt different.
I walked beside Damian, my steps slower than usual, my body still weak from everything that had happened. Every movement felt slightly delayed, like my mind hadn’t quite caught up with my body yet.
My thoughts were still racing.
Still replaying everything.
The door bursting open.
Their voices. The fear.
And then, Him..
The moment he appeared to secure me, just like the other time.
The moment everything changed and I wasn't as scared
I swallowed hard, trying to steady myself as we moved through the hallway. Guards passed by quickly, speaking in low, urgent tones, their eyes sharp and alert.
Everything was still in motion.
Still tense.
Still unsettled.
But through all of it, Damian didn’t rush me.
That surprised me.
He didn’t push me forward. Didn’t demand I keep up.
He adjusted.
His pace slowed just enough to match mine, subtle enough that someone else might not notice.
But I did.
And for some reason…
That mattered.
More than it should have.
When we finally reached my room, the door was already open. Someone must have checked it ahead of time. Cleared it.
Made sure it was safe. That thought alone made something tighten in my chest.
Because now, nothing felt completely safe anymore.
“Sit.”
His voice broke through my thoughts, firm but not harsh.
I didn’t argue. Didn’t question.
I walked inside and sat on the edge of the bed, my hands resting loosely in my lap. The softness beneath me felt almost unfamiliar after everything, like my body didn’t quite trust it yet.
Too tired to fight.
Too overwhelmed to think.
I exhaled slowly, trying to steady my breathing, but the tension still clung to me, refusing to let go.
Damian didn’t sit.
He stayed standing in front of me. Watching.
Always watching with concern in his eyes
His presence filled the room in a way that made everything else fade into the background. His eyes moved over me carefully, assessing, searching, as if trying to find something I might not even realize was there.
Injury.
Weakness.
Anything out of place.
“You’re not hurt?” he asked.
His voice was quieter now.
Controlled.
But there was something beneath it.
Something sharp.
I shook my head slowly.
“No,” I said softly. “Just… scared.”
The word felt small the moment I said it. Inadequate.
Like it couldn’t fully capture what I had felt.
What I still felt. Fear wasn’t just fear.
It was the moment of helplessness. The loss of control.
The realization that everything could end in seconds.
But it was the closest word I had.
His jaw tightened slightly.
A subtle shift.
But I saw it.
“They shouldn’t have reached you.”
There it was again.
That tone.
Cold.
Controlled.
But underneath it, Anger. Not loud. Not explosive.
But deep down
Dangerous. The kind that didn’t disappear.
But the kind that waited, calculated and punished.
“It wasn’t your fault,” I said quietly.
The words came out before I could stop them.
Because somehow, I knew where this was going.
His eyes snapped to mine immediately.
Sharp.
Intense.
“Yes,” he said.
It wasn’t a response.
It was a statement.
“It was.”
The certainty in his voice made something in me still.
“I should have been here.”
The weight of those words settled heavily in the room.
Not just responsibility.
Not just control.
Something more.
“You were dealing with them,” I said, trying to reason with him. “You didn’t know—”
“I should have known.”
His voice cut through mine.
Not raised but final.
The kind of tone that ended arguments before they even began.
Silence fell between us.
Heavy and uncomfortable but nonoas empty.
It carried everything unsaid.
Everything he wasn’t willing to admit.
Everything I wasn’t sure how to understand.
I hesitated, my fingers tightening slightly against the fabric of my dress.
I should have stayed quiet.
I should have let it go.
But something in me refused to.
Because this—
This mattered.
More than it should have.
Slowly, carefully, I lifted my hand.
The movement felt small.
Insignificant.
But at the same time—
It felt like crossing a line.
One we hadn’t crossed before.
My fingers brushed against his hand.
Lightly.
Barely there.
Testing.
Waiting.
The moment the contact was made—
He stilled.
Completely.
Every muscle in his body seemed to lock in place, as if even that small touch had caught him off guard.
For a second, I thought he would pull away.
That he would create distance.
Rebuild whatever wall had been there before.
But he didn’t.
He stayed exactly where he was.
Didn’t move.
Didn’t speak.
Didn’t break the contact.
Something inside me shifted at that.
Something quiet.
Something steady.
“You came for me,” I said softly.
My voice was barely above a whisper.
But the words carried everything I couldn’t fully explain.
Everything I had felt in that moment.
Fear.
Relief.
And something else.
Something I wasn’t ready to name yet.
That was enough.
For me.
For now.
His gaze dropped to where my fingers rested against his hand.
Then slowly—
It lifted back to my face.
And something in his expression changed.
Subtly, but unmistakably... the sharp edges softened.
The cold control wavered—just slightly.
Replaced by something more complex.
More human.
Something I hadn’t seen clearly before.
And for a moment, neither of us moved.
Neither of us spoke.
The silence wasn’t heavy anymore.
It wasn’t tense it felt…Different.
Like something had shifted between us.
Not broken, not defined but changed.
And neither of us knew exactly what it meant yet.
But we both felt it.
