Chapter 8
Evelyn’s POV
What was his? You’ve got to be kidding me. I couldn’t even tell if I was more upset on the fact that he was referring to me as something that belonged to him, a property to be owned. Or the fact that my whole body reacted to his words.
“Can you please stop.” My voice was low when I said this, and it shook lightly. I looked away quickly, hating how low and helpless my voice sounded.
I felt his hard gaze on me, and then he reached out again to cup my cheeks, and this time, he brought his face so close, that our lips were almost touching.
“Little wolf.” He said calmly. “You shouldn’t test me like this. I might not be able to stop myself from hurting your friend next time if he keeps touching you like that.” He whispered in a tone that send shivers through my body.
I quickly pushed against his chest and stepped out from his hold. I couldn’t meet his eyes, not when I knew just how intoxicating it could be.
“Why are you here? Did you get the message already?” I asked him, quickly changing the subject, as I quickly took one more step back, afraid he will pull me back to himself.
By this time, I could feel the eyes of other pack members on us. Everyone had already started coming out from their rooms, and most of them had already spotted us, and had began whispering among themselves.
I knew what was probably going on in their minds. They were all probably wondering what I was doing with the Alpha’s brother, the one everyone knew as a murderer. The people here didn’t like me, but somehow, I knew that after today, their hate will only grow.
“What message?” His voice came suddenly, breaking through my line of thoughts. I looked up at him with dark eyes, trying to read his expression, but his eyes held complete innocence, causing me to almost roll my eyes at him.
“You Beta, Dylan, he should have given you my message by now. Why are you still here?” I insisted, trying to walk pass him, but he took my hand and drew me back gently, until I had no choice than to be pressed against him again.
I growled, hating this close proximity. “Let me go.” I said through clenched teeth.
His eyes narrowed as he pinned me down with his gaze. “What did Dylan say to you? What ever he did or said, I can assure you that I knew nothing about it.” He told me seriously.
I scoffed. It was unexpected that he was trying to escape liability like this. That was absolutely very annoying.
I pulled myself out of his hold when his hand reached to cup my chin again. He was determined to make things difficult for me. What if the Alpha saw us like this? I wouldn’t want more attention than I am already receiving, but with him right beside me and holding me this intimately, I guess my solitude would soon disappear.
“So, you are telling me that the beta, your beta came to me without your instruction?” I rolled my eyes. That was impossible, Beta’s were made to follow their Alpha’s instructions, that could only mean that Dylan was following me based on his instruction.
He arched a brow confusion clearly plastered on his gorgeous face, I noticed he was neatly shaved, making his face pulp out more to showcase its extreme beauty. His muscles were strained, and they were so bold against the T-shirt he had on, making him look both powerful and alluring.
“You don’t believe me.” He didn’t sound shocked. “What did Dylan tell you that made you this angry?” He asked curiously, but it seemed he was getting annoyed. But at who?
I shrugged, “It doesn’t matter. I just need you and your followers to leave me the hell alone.”
His eyes darkened slightly. “Why? Because you don’t want your friend to know?” He asked suddenly, his eyes moving past me.
I turned to see that Lucien was standing there, watching us with a dark gaze full of so many questions, and yet what seemed like rage.
Just then, he turned my face back to him, and my heart skipped a beat. “You are my mate Eve, why is that so hard for you to accept?” He was getting pissed off now, but he was doing a damned good job at keeping it in.
What games was the moon goddess playing at pitching me against a powerful man as this Alpha? I tried to tell myself he was being sincere, that for once, I should just ignore that sense of judgment that probed at my conscience to tell me I was in for a ton of pain if I let myself get carried away, but my fear took the better part of me.
His jaw twitched as he asked. “Is it because you are afraid of me too, because of the rumors?” There was pain in his voice now.
“I am not afraid of you Alpha. I don’t believe the rumors.” At least not entirely. I cleared my throat and continued in a defiant tone. “I don't want the likes of you paying me any attention. I am grateful you had to be dragged into my public humiliation, but you really didn't have to. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have, if you didn't have this sudden perception that I was your mate.” I didn’t know why I said that, but it was too late to take it back.
I watched his eyes darken, and his countenance shifted as hints of anger took over his features. His hands fell to his side, and he took a step back, while clenching his fists. I knew that I'd hit the wrong button, one that had pained him deeply.
“You know, saying thank you would have been nice. That was an unfair thing to say.” He sounded calm, but there was a tone of disappointment beneath his words, one that broke my heart. “Just so you know, I would have still saved you If you weren't my mate.” With that, he turned and walked away, without looking back.
I swallowed, the pain burning through me.
