Chapter 94 Wolves don't respond to fear.
Lena," Melissa said, her eyes bulging out in awe. Lena was huge, no she was humongous. She laid right in front of her and stretched her claws towards her as if showing her that they were neatly manicured.
Melissa stepped back to admire her more and what caught her attention the most was her eyes. Lena's eyes held a yellow wolf like iris. The kind that will glow in the dark but within it was like a turbulent wave of darkness. It was a vortex that seemed to suck everything around it into itself.
"So why are you here?" She asked, licking her paws carefully.
Melissa couldn't deny she was a little bit afraid- scratch that, she was quite afraid. A single swing of Lena's paws and she would be squashed like a bug. The size difference, the presence she emitted and the eerie darkness coming from around the cave made Melissa quiver.
She exhaled, reminding herself that this was just a part of her own soul, an individual in its own right but a part of her. "I want to talk to you," she said. "Directly."
"Ah," the wolf growled. "Little one is gathering some courage," she rose up and shook herself then looked directly into Melissa's eyes.
"What are you doing?" Melissa asked, shifting backwards fearfully.
The wolf walked forward and Melissa took a step backward. "Stop moving!" She commanded. “We need to talk.”
The wolf chuckled, if a breaking growl can be called a chuckle. It stared into her eyes and then rushed forward in annoyance. Melissa had to dive away to avoid its attack. She rolled up again. "What are you doing?" She asked.
"Wolves do not answer to fear," Lena said and shook its head, letting out an intense growl. The entire area shook. "You walked in here on your own volition, little One. It means you want me to devour you and take over, you are tired already aren't you?" She asked.
Melissa couldn't process this. When Richard was talking to her about her innate ability, he said, the more a wolf trusts its human counterpart, the more they seem to merge and the powers of the wolf sips into the counterpart. She could use Lena's powers now, why then does she want to devour her again? And isn't this the same Lena she speaks with? Why was this happening?
She was panicking already. She rushed backwards as the wolf rushed towards her. She turned immediately into a sprint, entering into the cave. The wolf followed her with a crashing dash, smashing its huge body against the walls of the cave. The entire cave shook and stalactites fell from the roof of the cave.
Melissa shielded her head as one of the large stalactites landed in front of her, she halted, but she was running too fast, she collided with it, staggering backward as she fell. Her heart was slamming against her chest as she heard the crashing steps of Lena behind her. Growling as it got closer, she dared not look back, instead she just shook herself up, dashing forward, she could see light in front of her, brighter than the ones emitted by the walls of the supposedly dark cave.
Melissa kept on running, but it was only a matter of time before the large hulking muscle bag of fur crashed into her. She got knocked sideways, her head smashing against the wall, sending a splitting headache throughout her entire body. She yelled and she saw her wolf turn back, rushing towards her, its large fangs opened up and made for her head.
She instinctively rolled out of the way in fear. She jumped forward and scrambled, her palm slashing against the sharp edge of a stone, blood spurted out, but her fear overcame her pain. She scrambled forward.
"Why are you trying to kill me?" She asked.
"Why else would a wolf want to kill a lowly human?" It asked.
"Lowly human?" She asked. "You never call me that, what is with you?" She asked, backing the walls.
Lena let out a deafening laughter, causing Melissa to stagger in fear and fall on her butts. She couldn't process or analyse the event. She knew this was her wolf, why the hell was it trying to kill her? The first time she was here, they only talked, and it was during her first turning. She told a lot of things about wolves and it gave Melissa insight into herself.
"Things have changed, little One," Lena said, "Right now, I just want to kill you," she smiled and came forward.
It was at that moment Melissa realised what was happening. Before Lena had begun the attack, she'd said something, "Wolves do not respond to fear." She understood now. She stood down, looked up and yelled. "Stop!!" She said and stared directly into the eyes of the wolf. "I am not afraid of you Lena, so stop," she commanded.
The wolf didn't listen, but Melissa stood her ground. It reached her within minutes and just before its teeth would snap shot against Melissa's head, it stopped. It smiled and closed its mouth.
"Wolves do not respond to fear," it said again before the entire scenery changed and they were both seating at the bank of a lake and all of Melissa's wounds had healed.
"Did you have to do that?" Melissa asked.
"Little One, I am a wolf, and a test of strength is customary among wolves," Lena replied. "So, why are you here?"
"I need to know my mate," she said, "And the only way to do that was to come see you, so here I am," Melissa replied.
The wolf looked in her eyes for a bit then spoke. "You were the one holding me back from telling you, why the change of heart now?" She asked.
"I didn't know I was holding you back," Melissa replied.
"Well, you can go now," Lena informed. "When you wake, all will be revealed."
Melissa looked at her and nodded but before she would leave her subconscious realm, she leaned her hand and touched the huge wolf, patting its furs as the scenery dissolved into darkness.
