Chapter 54 Caught in the crossfire
Melissa sat in the psychiatrist's office, her mind wandering as the doctor continued to ask her questions. She couldn't help but feel impatient and restless. All she wanted was to sneak out and find Avalor's room, to confirm for herself whether he was still in a coma or not.
As the psychiatrist delved deeper into Melissa's fears and anxieties, she struggled to pay attention. Her mind was consumed with thoughts of Avalor and the possibility that he might wake up and come after her again. She knew it was irrational, but the fear was overpowering.
Finally, unable to bear it any longer, Melissa decided to take matters into her own hands. She feigned a yawn and stretched, pretending to be tired from the session.
"I'm sorry, doctor," she said, trying to sound apologetic. "I'm just feeling a bit exhausted. Can we continue this another time?"
The psychiatrist nodded understandingly. "Of course, Melissa. It's important to take care of yourself. We can schedule another session for next week."
Melissa thanked the psychiatrist and quickly made her way out of the office. She couldn't shake off the urgency she felt to find Avalor's room and put her fears to rest.
As she navigated the hospital corridors, Melissa's heart raced with a mix of excitement and apprehension. She knew she was taking a risk by sneaking around, but she couldn't ignore the nagging doubt that Avalor might still pose a threat.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Melissa found herself standing outside Avalor's room. She took a deep breath, her hand trembling as she reached for the doorknob. With a quick twist, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.
To her surprise, Avalor was still lying motionless in the hospital bed, hooked up to various machines. His eyes were closed, and there was no sign of movement or consciousness. Relief washed over Melissa as she realized that her fears had been unfounded.
She approached the bed cautiously, her eyes scanning Avalor's face for any signs of awakening. But there was nothing. He remained in a deep coma, seemingly unaware of his surroundings.
Melissa's initial excitement turned into a mix of conflicting emotions. On one hand, she was relieved that Avalor hadn't woken up and posed a threat to her and her family. But on the other hand, she couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment.
Deep down, Melissa knew that she wanted Avalor to stay in a coma. She didn't want to face him again, didn't want to relive the pain and fear he had inflicted upon her. But a part of her also wanted closure, wanted to confront him and make sure he could never hurt anyone again.
As Melissa stood by Avalor's bedside, she realized that she needed to let go of her obsession with him. She needed to focus on healing herself and moving forward, rather than constantly looking back.
With a heavy heart, Melissa turned away from Avalor's room and made her way back to the psychiatrist's office. She knew that seeking professional help was the right path for her, even if it meant confronting her fears head-on.
As Melissa walked back through the hospital corridor, a sense of unease settled in her stomach. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her, trailing her every move. Every creak of the floorboards, every distant sound, seemed to amplify her paranoia.
Trying to dismiss her fears as mere imagination, Melissa quickened her pace. But as she rounded a corner, her heart skipped a beat when she caught a glimpse of a figure behind her. She stopped abruptly, her breath caught in her throat.
Turning around slowly, Melissa found herself face to face with a tall, mysterious man. His dark hair fell messily over his forehead, and his eyes held a mixture of concern and urgency. He seemed oddly familiar, but Melissa couldn't place where she might have seen him before.
"Who are you?" Melissa asked, her voice tinged with caution.
The man held up his hands in a gesture of peace. "Melissa, you don't know me, but I know Avalor. My name is Sam, and I'm his best friend."
Melissa's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't expected someone connected to Avalor to appear at this moment. "What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Sam glanced around nervously before leaning in closer. "They're trying to track you down," he whispered urgently. "Avalor isn't the only one they want to silence. They're afraid you know too much."
Melissa's mind whirled with confusion. "Know too much? About what?"
Sam hesitated for a moment before answering. "About the experiments. About what they did to Avalor. They can't risk anyone finding out the truth."
Fear and anger mingled inside Melissa. She had suspected that there was more to Avalor's condition than met the eye, but she had never imagined it could be so sinister.
"Who are 'they'?" Melissa pressed, her voice quivering with anxiety.
"That's not important right now," Sam replied, his voice urgent. "What matters is your safety. You need to run, Melissa. Get as far away from here as possible."
Melissa's heart pounded in her chest as she weighed her options. Could she trust this stranger? Was running truly the best course of action?
Sam must have sensed her hesitation and desperation. "I know it's hard to believe me," he said softly, "but Avalor and I became friends long before any of this happened. He doesn't deserve what they're doing to him, and neither do you."
It was true. Melissa had experienced firsthand the fear Avalor had instilled in her. But deep down, she also felt a sense of sympathy for him. No one deserved to be a victim of such cruel experiments.
Taking a deep breath, Melissa made her decision. She would trust Sam and heed his advice. Lives were at stake, and she couldn't allow herself to be caught in the crossfire.
"Okay, Sam," Melissa said, her voice resolute. "I'll trust you. But we need to move quickly. Can you help me?"
