Chapter 83 Rogue Threat Returns

Chapter 83 Rogue Threat Returns
POV: Luna
Three days after my dream with Miguel, I'm assigned to evening patrol.
It's a rotating duty for second years. Walking the Academy perimeter. Checking for weaknesses in the wards. Making sure nothing dangerous has gotten too close.
Usually it's boring.
Tonight feels different.
Ryder is leading our patrol group. Me, Nova, Marcus from combat class (his arm fully healed), and two other second years I don't know well.
"Stay alert," Ryder says as we head into the forest. "There have been reports of unusual activity near the eastern boundary."
"What kind of activity?" I ask.
"Movement. Shadows. Nothing confirmed, but enough to warrant caution."
We spread out in formation. Close enough to support each other. Far enough to cover more ground.
The forest is quiet tonight. Too quiet.
No birds. No small animals. Not even wind through the trees.
Just silence.
My wolf stirs uneasily.
"Something's wrong," I say quietly.
Ryder nods. "I feel it too. Everyone stay sharp."
We continue deeper into the woods, following the patrol route.
That's when I sense it.
Movement. Unnatural. Wrong.
Not an animal. Not a student. Something else.
"There," I point toward a cluster of trees to the north. "Something's there."
"I don't see anything," one of the other students says.
"Trust her instincts," Ryder orders. "Eclipse senses are sharper than ours. If she says something's there, something's there."
We approach cautiously.
The wrongness gets stronger. Like the air itself is corrupted.
And then I see it.
A creature. Roughly wolf-shaped but distorted. Its fur is matted and dark. Its eyes glow that sickly red I remember from last year.
A rogue.
But different from the ones before. Bigger. More coherent. Not mindless.
This one is doing something.
It's crouched near a tree, scratching symbols into the bark with its claws.
Magical sigils.
"What is it doing?" Nova whispers.
"Marking territory," Ryder says. "Or leaving a message."
The rogue finishes its work and turns.
It sees us.
For a moment, we just stare at each other.
Then it runs.
"After it!" Ryder orders.
But I'm already moving.
My wolf surges forward, and I let it.
Partial shift. Just enough to enhance my speed and senses without fully transforming.
My vision sharpens. Colors become more vivid. Scents more distinct.
I can track the rogue easily now. Following its trail through the forest.
It's fast. But I'm faster.
Behind me, I hear the others trying to keep up. But I'm pulling ahead.
The rogue leads me deeper into the woods. Away from the Academy. Toward the boundary wards.
Is it trying to escape? Or lure me somewhere?
My instincts scream warning, but I keep running.
I need to know what it was doing. What those symbols mean.
The rogue reaches a clearing and stops.
I skid to a halt, keeping my distance.
It turns to face me, and I realize something.
It's not attacking. It's waiting.
Like it wants me here.
"Luna, fall back!" Ryder's voice behind me. "It's a trap!"
But it's too late.
The clearing erupts with magical energy.
Symbols appear on every tree. Glowing. Pulsing. All pointing toward the center.
Toward me.
The rogue makes a sound that's almost like laughter, then bolts through the wards and disappears.
I'm left standing in a circle of glowing sigils.
And they're reacting to my mark.
My Eclipse symbol flares hot. Bright. The sigils pulse in response.
"Luna, get out of there!" Ryder reaches the clearing with the others.
But I can't move.
The sigils have locked onto my mark. Connected to it somehow.
Images flood my mind.
A figure in the darkness. Tall. Powerful. Waiting.
A voice. The same voice I heard in the woods weeks ago.
"I've been waiting for you, little Eclipse. Come find me. Come face what you're meant to face."
The connection breaks.
I collapse, and Ryder catches me before I hit the ground.
"What happened?" he demands. "What did you see?"
"Someone. They're calling me. Using these sigils to reach my mark."
Nova examines the symbols carefully. "These are summoning marks. Old magic. Very old. Someone is trying to draw Luna out."
"We need to document this," Ryder says. "And get it to the Headmaster immediately."
Marcus is already taking pictures with his phone.
I force myself to stand. My legs are shaky, but I manage.
"The rogue wasn't attacking," I say. "It was a messenger. Leading me here. Showing me these symbols."
"Someone sent it specifically for you," Ryder says grimly. "This is coordinated. Planned."
"Who would do this?"
"Someone who knows what you are. Who knows your mark can interact with Eclipse magic." He looks at the sigils again. "Someone who wants you badly enough to risk breaching Academy wards."
We head back to report what we found.
But I can't shake the feeling.
Someone is calling me. Specifically. Personally.
And they're getting closer.
The Headmaster calls an emergency faculty meeting that night.
Students are confined to dorms while teachers investigate.
Aria, Sienna, and Lyric sneak into my room through some passage Lyric discovered.
"We heard there was an incident on patrol," Aria says. "What happened?"
I tell them everything. The rogue. The symbols. The voice.
Lyric pulls up images of the sigils on her tablet. Marcus sent them to her.
"These are Eclipse-specific," she says, analyzing them. "Only someone with Eclipse knowledge could create these. And only someone with serious power could make them work across distance."
"So who made them?" Nova asks.
"Someone who's been studying Eclipse magic for a very long time." Sienna traces one of the symbols. "These patterns are ancient. Pre-Academy. Maybe pre-civilization."
"That narrows it down to exactly no one," Aria mutters.
"Not no one," I say quietly. "Professor Thorne is over two hundred years old. He knew my grandmother. He could have this knowledge."
"Or Cole," Lyric suggests. "He's new. Shows up right when weird things start happening. That's suspicious."
"Or it could be someone we haven't met yet," Sienna adds. "Someone working from outside the Academy."
We discuss possibilities for hours. But we're not getting anywhere.
What we know: someone powerful wants me. They're using rogues as messengers. They know Eclipse magic. They can breach Academy wards without triggering alarms.
What we don't know: who they are. What they want. How to stop them.
"We need more information," I finally say. "And I think I know where to get it."
"Where?" Nova asks.
"Those sigils. They're still in the clearing. Still active. I could go back. Try to use my mark to trace the connection."
"Absolutely not," Ryder's voice from the doorway.
We all jump.
He's standing there in his teaching robes, looking stern.
"How long have you been listening?" Aria demands.
"Long enough to know Luna is considering something incredibly stupid." He enters the room fully. "You are not going back to that clearing alone."
"I wasn't planning to go alone."
"You're not going at all. That's exactly what whoever created those sigils wants. You, alone and vulnerable, trying to trace their magic."
"Then what do we do?"
"We let the faculty handle it. They're analyzing the symbols now. Trying to break the connection."
"And if they can't?"
Ryder's silence is answer enough.
The next morning, I'm called to the Headmaster's office.
Professor Cael and Professor Thorne are there. Along with Cole.
"Miss Eclipse," the Headmaster says. "We've analyzed the sigils from last night. They are indeed targeting you specifically. Designed to resonate with your Eclipse mark."
"Who made them?"
"We don't know. But they required extensive knowledge of Eclipse bloodline magic. Knowledge that very few possess." He pauses. "Someone is trying to draw you out of the Academy's protection. We cannot allow that to happen."
"So what? I just hide here forever?"
"For now, yes. Until we identify the threat."
"But the sigils are still active," I argue. "Still calling. I can feel them even from here. My mark keeps pulsing. Reacting."
"We're working on a counter-spell," Professor Cael says. "Something to block the connection."
"How long will that take?"
"As long as it takes. In the meantime, you are not to leave Academy grounds for any reason."
I'm about to argue when Cole speaks up.
"With respect, Headmaster, confining her won't solve the problem. Whoever created those sigils will just try another method. We should use this as an opportunity."
"An opportunity for what?" Professor Thorne asks sharply.
"To identify them. Let them think their summons is working. Monitor Luna closely. When they make their move, we'll be ready."
"You're suggesting we use Miss Eclipse as bait," Professor Thorne says coldly.
"I'm suggesting we take a proactive approach rather than a reactive one."
The Headmaster considers this. "Your point has merit, Professor Mercer. But the risk to Luna is considerable."
"The risk to Luna is considerable either way," Cole counters. "At least this way, we control the circumstances."
They debate for another hour. I mostly stay quiet.
Finally, the Headmaster decides.
"We'll strengthen security around Luna. Monitor the sigils. And prepare for whoever created them to make another attempt." He looks at me seriously. "Miss Eclipse, you are not to investigate this on your own. Is that understood?"
"Yes, sir."
But as I leave the office, I know I won't be able to just sit and wait.
Someone is calling me. Specifically. Deliberately.
And something tells me that until I answer that call, the attacks won't stop.
That evening, I return to the clearing alone.
I know it's stupid. Know I'm probably walking into a trap.
But I need answers.
The sigils are still there. Still glowing faintly in the darkness.
I step into the circle and extend my mark.
Immediately, the symbols flare to life.
Bright silver light connecting them all. Creating a web. A network.
And at the center, my mark pulses violently.
The connection opens.
And I hear him. Clear as if he's standing right beside me.
"There you are, little Eclipse. I knew you'd come."
"Who are you?"
"Someone who's been waiting a very long time for you to exist. Someone who understands what you're meant to become." A pause. "Your first trial approaches. And when it does, you'll need my help. Whether you want it or not."
"I don't need help from someone who sends rogues after me."
"Those weren't attacks. They were messages. Invitations. Demonstrations of what's coming." The voice drops lower. "The goddess thinks she can control you through her trials. Shape you into her perfect weapon. But she's wrong. You're so much more than that."
"You don't know anything about me."
"I know everything about you, Luna Eclipse. I know your power. Your pain. Your potential. I know you're stronger than any Eclipse before you. And I know that when the time comes, you'll choose me."
"Never."
Dark laughter echoes through the connection.
"We'll see. Enjoy your trial, little Eclipse. And remember, when you fail, I'll be waiting to catch you."
The connection severs.
The sigils pulse one final time.
And in the center of the clearing, a new symbol appears.
Glowing. Pulsing. Calling directly to my mark.
A summoning circle.
For me.
And I realize with terrifying certainty that whoever is calling me isn't giving up.
They're just getting started.
