Chapter 58 Recovery and Resolve
POV: Luna
I wake up to sunlight streaming through unfamiliar windows.
For a moment, I don't know where I am. Then the pain hits, and I remember everything.
The ambush. The five rogues. Ryder saving me.
I'm in the medical wing. The room is small and sterile, smelling of herbs and antiseptic. My shoulder and leg are wrapped in bandages that glow faintly with healing magic.
"You're awake."
I turn my head to see Nova sitting in a chair beside my bed. She looks exhausted, like she hasn't slept in days.
"How long have I been out?" My voice comes out rough and scratchy.
"Three days."
Three days. I've lost three entire days.
"Miguel—"
"No word," Nova says quietly. "I'm sorry."
The guilt hits me like a physical blow. Three more days that Miguel has been out there alone. Three more days I couldn't help him.
"The faculty has been investigating," Nova continues. "Trying to figure out who set you up. That solo trial wasn't authorized properly. Someone bypassed the normal approval process."
"Who?"
"They don't know yet. Or if they do, they're not saying." She leans forward. "Luna, someone really wants you dead. Like, really wants it."
"I know."
"Are you scared?"
I think about it. "Yeah. But I'm more angry than scared."
"Good. Use that." Nova stands and stretches. "I should tell Nurse Willow you're awake. She's been checking on you every hour."
She leaves, and I'm alone with my thoughts.
Someone set me up. Someone put those spelled collars on those wolves and sent them after me.
But who? And why?
I know being Eclipse makes me a target. Professor Cael warned me about that. But this feels personal. Calculated.
Nurse Willow bustles in, all business.
"Awake at last. Let me check your vitals."
She pokes and prods, muttering to herself. After a few minutes, she nods.
"You're healing well. Better than expected, actually. Eclipse blood has strong regenerative properties." She looks at me seriously. "But you were lucky, child. A few inches to the left on that shoulder wound and you'd have bled out before anyone could help you."
"When can I leave?"
"Eager, are we?" She smiles slightly. "Another two days of observation. Then light activity only for a week after that. No training. No shifting. Nothing strenuous."
"But—"
"No arguments. Those wounds were serious. Push yourself too hard and you'll tear them open again."
I want to argue, but I know she's right. I can feel how weak I am just from sitting up.
Over the next two days, I get a steady stream of visitors.
Nova comes every morning and evening, bringing me food from the dining hall and filling me in on school gossip.
Aria, Sienna, and Lyric visit together, bringing flowers and a card signed by half the first year class.
Even Marcus stops by, awkward but sincere. "Glad you're not dead," he says. "That would have been bad."
It almost makes me laugh.
But the visitor I'm most surprised by is Professor Cael.
He comes late on the second night, when most students are asleep.
"How are you feeling, Miss Eclipse?"
"Like I got torn apart by five rogue wolves."
"An accurate assessment." He pulls up a chair. "I wanted to apologize. That trial should never have happened. Not like that. Not without proper oversight."
"Who authorized it?"
"That's what we're trying to determine. The paperwork was filed correctly, but the signatures... they're being questioned."
"You think they were forged?"
"I think someone wanted you alone in that forest. And they were willing to break rules to make it happen."
The thought sends a chill through me.
"Professor Thorne," I say suddenly. "He was there when the Headmaster announced the trial. He seemed... eager about it."
Professor Cael's expression doesn't change, but something flickers in his eyes. "Professor Thorne has been teaching at this Academy for over two hundred years. He's a respected member of the faculty."
"He's also the same Marcus Thorne who betrayed my grandmother."
Now Professor Cael does react. His eyebrows rise slightly.
"You know about that."
"I found her journals. In the restricted section."
He's quiet for a long moment. Then he says, "Be very careful with accusations, Luna. Professor Thorne is powerful. Connected. And yes, he knew your grandmother. But that doesn't mean he's behind this."
"But it doesn't mean he's not, either."
"No. It doesn't." He stands. "Get your rest. And when you're healed, we'll begin proper training. No more solo trials. No more unnecessary risks."
"What kind of training?"
"The kind that will keep you alive."
He leaves, and I'm alone again with my thoughts.
That night, I dream.
Not of Miguel this time. Of the ambush.
Those five pairs of red eyes. The gray wolf's teeth inches from my throat. The smell of blood and fear.
I wake up gasping, my heart racing.
It takes me several minutes to calm down.
This is what they wanted. To make me afraid. To make me doubt myself.
But I won't let them win.
I'll get stronger. Fast enough. Skilled enough. Powerful enough that next time they come for me, I'll be ready.
On the morning of the third day, Ryder visits.
He looks tired, like he's been pushing himself hard.
"How are you feeling?" he asks.
"Better. Nurse Willow says I can leave this afternoon."
"Good." He hesitates, then says, "I want to train you. Personally. Advanced techniques. Things they don't teach in regular classes."
"Why?"
"Because whoever is after you isn't going to stop. And basic training isn't enough. You need to learn how to survive against impossible odds."
"I thought Nurse Willow said no training for a week."
"Light training. We'll start slow. Build your strength back up while teaching you how to read your opponents. How to control your instincts instead of letting them control you." His amber eyes are intense. "Luna, you survived five rogues. Do you know how rare that is? Most wolves would have died. But you have something in you. Something that goes beyond normal wolf instincts. We need to develop that."
"What if I'm not strong enough?"
"You are. You just don't know it yet." He stands. "Meet me at the private training grounds tomorrow morning. Six AM. Don't be late."
"Private training grounds?"
"Behind the Academy. Where the faculty train. I've gotten permission for us to use it."
After he leaves, I sit with that information.
Ryder wants to train me personally. In advanced techniques. In a private location.
Part of me is grateful. Part of me is terrified.
Because advanced training means he thinks I'll need it. Thinks the threats against me are only going to get worse.
And he's probably right.
Nurse Willow clears me to leave that afternoon, with strict instructions to take it easy.
"No running. No shifting. And if you feel any sharp pains, you come back immediately."
"I will."
Nova helps me back to our dorm. I'm slower than I'd like to be, my leg still stiff from the injuries.
"You sure you're ready to be out of the medical wing?" she asks.
"I have to be. I can't just hide forever."
That night, I barely sleep. Partly from nerves about the training tomorrow. Partly because every time I close my eyes, I see those red eyes watching me.
And underneath it all, the constant worry about Miguel.
Where is he? Is he safe? Is he even still alive?
The dream-link hasn't activated since the night we tried to find him. It's like something is blocking it. Or maybe he's too far away now.
Or maybe I just don't want to think about the other option.
At five thirty AM, I drag myself out of bed and get dressed.
My shoulder is still sore, but the bandages came off yesterday. The wounds have healed to pink scars. In a few more weeks, they'll be barely visible.
Eclipse healing at work.
I make my way to the private training grounds. It takes longer than it should because I have to stop twice to catch my breath.
But I make it.
The training grounds are hidden behind the main Academy building, surrounded by tall hedges that block them from view. The space is larger than I expected, with various obstacles and weapons laid out.
Ryder is already there, stretching.
"You're early," he says when he sees me.
"You said not to be late."
"I like that about you. You take things seriously." He gestures to the center of the grounds. "Come. Let's start with basics. Show me your defensive stance."
I position myself the way he taught me weeks ago in regular training.
He circles me slowly, studying my form.
"Your balance is better. But you're still favoring your injured leg."
"It's stiff."
"Then we'll work through that. Pain is just information. Your body telling you what needs attention." He stops in front of me. "But first, we need to talk about what happened during the ambush."
My stomach tightens. "What about it?"
"You panicked. At the beginning. I could see it in your movements when I arrived. The panic almost got you killed."
"Five rogues attacked me. Panic seems like a reasonable response."
"For a normal wolf, yes. But you're not a normal wolf. You're Eclipse. And Eclipse wolves don't have the luxury of panic." His voice is firm but not unkind. "Next time someone tries to kill you, and there will be a next time, you need to be able to control your fear. Use it instead of letting it use you."
"How do I do that?"
"That's what I'm going to teach you." He smiles slightly. "Ready to learn what it really means to be Eclipse?"
I take a deep breath and nod.
"Ready."
