Chapter 37 Moonlight Challenge
POV: LUNA
The full moon hung heavy in the sky. Larger than I'd ever seen it. Brighter. Like it was watching. Waiting.
Every student at Silverwood gathered at the Moon Circle. Faculty lined the perimeter. Watchful. Tense. Everyone knew what tomorrow brought. The challenge. Public. Unavoidable.
But tonight was something else. Something older.
The advanced Moon Circle ritual. Reserved for students who'd mastered their shifts. Who could handle the full power of the moon without losing themselves.
I wasn't ready. Everyone knew it. But I was being tested anyway.
Because tomorrow I'd face Darius. And if I couldn't handle a controlled ritual tonight, I had no chance in an actual fight.
"All students to your positions," Professor Thorne called. His voice carrying across the clearing. "Tonight we honor the goddess. We embrace our wolf nature fully. We prove our control."
Students moved into formation. A circle within the ancient stone ring. First years on the outer edge. Seniors near the center.
I found my spot between Nova and Marcus. Both of them shooting me worried looks.
"You okay?" Nova whispered.
"No. But I'll pretend."
"That's the spirit."
Professor Cael stepped into the center of the circle. She raised her arms. The moon seemed to pulse in response.
"Tonight, the veil is thin. The goddess watches. The moon calls to the wolf within each of you. You will shift. Fully. Completely. But you will maintain control. You will remember who you are. What you are. And you will prove you are worthy of the mark you bear."
My mark burned. Hot. Responding to her words. To the moon. To something ancient and powerful I didn't fully understand.
"When I give the signal, you will shift. You will hold the form until I release you. Anyone who loses control will be removed from the circle. Anyone who endangers others will face consequences. Are there questions?"
Silence. Just the sound of breathing. Heartbeats. Fear.
"Then we begin."
Cael's eyes glowed silver. The same color as the moon. She spoke words in a language I didn't recognize. Ancient. Primal. Magic that predated modern wolves.
The air pressure changed. Dropped. My ears popped. The mark on my wrist flared bright enough to see even in the moonlight.
"Shift," Cael commanded.
Around the circle, students began transforming. Controlled. Practiced. Most of them had done this dozens of times.
I'd done it once. By accident. In a panic.
This was different. This was deliberate. Intentional. And the moon was so much stronger than normal. Pulling at my wolf. Demanding release.
I closed my eyes. Let my wolf rise. Felt the familiar sensation of bones reshaping. Muscles reforming. Instincts sharpening.
The shift started smoothly. My senses exploding with information. Smells. Sounds. The heartbeat of every person in the circle.
Then the panic hit.
Too much sensation. Too much power. Too much wolf and not enough human control.
My wolf wanted to run. To hunt. To fight. It didn't care about rituals or control or proving anything. It just wanted freedom.
I felt my control slipping. The human part of my mind getting smaller. Quieter. Drowned out by wolf instinct.
No. Not now. Not in front of everyone.
I tried to pull back. To reassert control. But the moon was too strong. The ritual too powerful. My wolf too hungry for this freedom.
I was losing myself. Disappearing into the wolf. Just like they'd all feared.
"Luna."
A voice. Familiar. Cutting through the chaos.
Ryder. He'd moved closer. Standing just outside the circle. His eyes locked on mine.
"Look at me. Focus."
I did. His eyes were steady. Calm. Grounding.
"You're not just a wolf. You're Luna. Luna Eclipse. The girl who survived her first shift. Who fought off rogues. Who stood up to Darius. You're stronger than this. Stronger than the moon. Stronger than the instinct trying to drown you."
His voice was an anchor. Something solid in the chaos of sensation and instinct.
"Breathe. Find the center. The place where human and wolf meet. That's where you live. That's where your power comes from."
I focused on his voice. On the memory of training together. Of the almost-kiss. Of all the moments that made me human and not just wolf.
Slowly, painfully, I found the center he was talking about. The balance point. Where I could be both things at once.
The panic receded. The wolf settled. Still present. Still powerful. But under control. Under my control.
I opened my eyes. Met Ryder's gaze. He nodded. Approval. Pride. Relief.
Around the circle, other students held their shifts perfectly. Some struggled but maintained. A few had already been removed, unable to handle the pressure.
But I was still here. Still in the circle. Still in control.
Professor Cael continued the ritual. Speaking in that ancient language. Drawing symbols in the air that glowed and held their shape like solid things.
The moon pulsed above us. I felt its power coursing through every wolf in the circle. Connecting us. Making us pack in a way that transcended individual loyalty.
This was old magic. The kind that created the first shifters. That bound wolves to the moon and the goddess. That made us more than human but less than fully beast.
My mark burned brighter. The Eclipse sigil glowing silver. Several students glanced at me. Noticing. Recognizing that something was different about my mark. About me.
Darius was across the circle. Even in wolf form, I recognized him. Larger than most. Confident. His eyes finding mine. A challenge even now.
Tomorrow. The actual fight. Public. No ritual to hide behind.
I broke eye contact first. Focused on maintaining control. On proving I could do this.
Time stretched. The ritual lasting longer than any normal shift. Testing endurance. Testing will. Testing the bond between human and wolf.
My body ached. The shift taking energy. Concentration. But I held it. Refused to break.
Finally, Cael spoke again. "Release."
Around the circle, students shifted back. Gasping. Exhausted. Some collapsed immediately. Others managed to stay on their feet.
I reverted slowly. Carefully. Making sure I maintained control even in the reverse. The shift back was just as important as the shift forward.
When I was human again, my legs shook. My whole body trembling from exertion.
Nova grabbed my arm. Steadied me. "You did it. Holy crap, you actually did it."
"Barely."
"Doesn't matter. You held it. That's what counts."
Ryder approached. He looked tired but satisfied. "Good work. You found your center faster than I expected."
"You helped. If you hadn't—"
"You would have figured it out. I just gave you a shortcut." He glanced around. Making sure no one was listening. "But tonight proved something important. You can handle the full shift under pressure. Tomorrow, when you face Darius, that's going to make all the difference."
"If I don't panic again."
"You won't. Because now you know you can do it. That's half the battle."
Professor Cael began dismissing students. Praising those who'd done well. Offering guidance to those who'd struggled.
The moon was still bright. Still watching. But the ritual was over. The test complete.
I'd survived. Barely. But survived.
That's when I heard it. A low growl from the forest.
Not a student. Not faculty. Something else. Something that didn't belong here.
The growl came again. Closer. Louder. Too close for comfort.
Every student froze. Faculty moved into defensive positions. Wands raised. Spells ready.
The growl echoed through the trees. Circling. Hunting.
Then silence. Worse than the sound. Because silence meant waiting. Watching. Preparing to attack.
"Everyone back to campus," Thorne ordered. His voice sharp. Urgent. "Now. Move."
Students didn't need to be told twice. They ran. Controlled panic. Years of training kicking in.
I started to follow. But my mark burned. That familiar warning. The presence in the forest wasn't just any threat.
It was here for me. Specifically. Personally.
The shadow creature. The thing that had warned about the convergence. About the seal breaking.
Tonight. The full moon. Everything aligned just like it had said.
And whatever was circling in the darkness was just the beginning.
