Chapter 283: The Argument Overheard
POV: Luna
The princess found me in my dorm. Sitting by window. Staring at courtyard below. Watching Liam and Caleb face off again. Watching argument I'd caused. Watching mates fighting because I existed. Because divine design had blessed complications instead of simplicity. Because goddess wisdom created relationships that destroyed instead of enhanced despite supposedly being divinely intended.
"Don't intervene," the princess said quietly. Sitting beside me. Understanding that sometimes witnessing was necessary. That some processing required privacy even when conducted in public space. That males needed to fight through words before resorting to violence. "Let them process. Let them speak truths they can't say to you. Let them be honest when your presence makes honesty complicated through love making them protect instead of express."
Through the Guardian Bond, I felt her wisdom. Her understanding from watching Selene navigate comparable situations. Her awareness that some conversations required absence of person being discussed because presence changed dynamics. Changed honesty. Changed what could be expressed without causing additional damage.
Below, Liam's voice carried. Frustrated. Angry. Honest.
"You died. I was there for her when you weren't. I held her while she screamed. I stayed when staying was agony because leaving her alone was unthinkable. I chose her when choosing was hard. When being there meant watching her break. When love meant enduring instead of just enjoying."
Caleb's response was quieter. Miguel's wisdom making him careful instead of defensive.
"I didn't choose to die. Didn't choose to leave her. Didn't choose to make her suffer or make you step into void my death created. And I didn't choose to come back just to watch her suffer more. Just to create complications. Just to prove divine design is cruel instead of wise."
"Then why did you come back? Why did goddess return you? Why did divine design create dual bonds if single mate was sufficient? Why complicate what was working? Why destroy what love had built through adding more when more means chaos instead of enhancement?"
Through the mate bond, I felt Liam's pain. His awareness that questions weren't really about Caleb. Were about divine design. Were about goddess wisdom creating complications that exceeded human capacity. Were about prophecy demanding more than anyone should sustain.
"The goddess gave me choice," Caleb said. Voice breaking. "Return or peace. Existence or rest. Pain or oblivion. I chose pain over peace because I couldn't leave her. Because watching from afterlife while she suffered was worse than returning to suffer with her. Because love meant choosing hardest option when easy option was available."
Through our bond, I felt Caleb's absolute honesty. His awareness that returning meant complications. Meant creating strain. Meant making everything harder. But that loving her meant choosing difficulty over comfort. Choosing presence over peace. Choosing her over himself regardless of consequences.
Liam processed. Understanding. Relating to choosing difficulty because love demanded it. Because Luna mattered more than comfort. Because some people were worth suffering for regardless of whether suffering was fair or necessary or divinely designed.
"I'm terrified of being second choice," Liam admitted. Voice raw. "Of being foundation she needs instead of relationship she wants. Of being necessary instead of desired. Of being primary mate in hierarchy while being secondary mate in heart. Of structure mattering while love favors you."
"I'm terrified of being complication," Caleb countered. "Of being divine design's imposition instead of Luna's choice. Of being blessed by goddess but resented by mate who was chosen freely. Of enhancing her power while destroying her peace. Of being divinely favored while being humanly unwanted despite bonds insisting otherwise."
The honesty was devastating. Both mates expressing fears they couldn't voice to me. Vulnerabilities they couldn't show when my presence demanded strength. Truth that love prevented because expressing hurt would cause hurt when hurting each other was last thing either wanted.
"If she chooses you," Liam said slowly. "If divine design's wisdom exceeds chronology's claim. If magical compatibility matters more than original choice. I'll hate it. I'll struggle. I'll probably break. But I'll accept it. Because her happiness matters more than my preferences. Because love means choosing her wellbeing over my comfort. Because some sacrifices are necessary when alternatives are worse."
"And if she chooses you," Caleb said. "If foundation proves more important than enhancement. If original bond exceeds divinely favored addition. If being first matters more than being magically compatible. I'll do the same. I'll accept it. I'll support it. I'll prove that love means wanting her happy even when her happiness excludes me."
Silence fell. Both processing. Both understanding that fear of being unchosen exceeded fear of sharing. That losing her completely was worse than sharing her partially. That divine design's complications were preferable to absence's certainty.
"But what if she needs both of us?" Caleb asked. Voice quiet. Thoughtful. Miguel's wisdom recognizing pattern. "What if divine design isn't offering choice? What if prophecy demands both? What if synthesis requires foundation and enhancement working together instead of competing? What if hierarchy isn't about choosing but about structuring?"
Through both mate bonds, I felt shift. Felt them processing. Felt understanding developing that maybe divine design didn't demand selection. Demanded cooperation. Required both working together instead of one being chosen over other. Needed synthesis instead of decision.
"Then we stop fighting each other," Liam said. Decision crystallizing. "We focus on keeping her alive instead of competing for primacy. We deal with bond issue after Cole is defeated. After portal is closed. After cosmic threats are addressed. We prioritize survival over romance when survival demands tactical unity regardless of emotional complications."
"Agreed," Caleb said. "We cooperate tactically. We process emotionally later. We prove that love creates strength when approached correctly even when correctly means deferring some processing until circumstances allow luxury of addressing relationship complications without endangering everyone through distraction."
Through both bonds, I felt their determination. Their commitment. Their choice to prioritize my survival over their competition. Their maturity accepting that some processing could wait when immediate threats demanded unity.
Then my Eclipse mark burned. Sudden. Intense. Unexpected. Betraying that I'd been listening. That I'd heard everything. That witnessing had been discovered through magical response preventing privacy when privacy was intended.
Both mates looked up simultaneously. Seeing me in window. Understanding I'd heard their argument. Their vulnerabilities. Their agreement formed without my input because my presence would have complicated discussion requiring honesty that love prevented when object of discussion was watching.
Through both bonds, I felt their awareness. Their understanding that I knew. That privacy had been violated through accident instead of intention. That witnessing changed everything because knowing they'd agreed without consulting her meant understanding they'd made choices about her life without her participation.
No pressure. Just everything. Forever. With mates cooperating finally but without her consent and mark betraying presence when privacy was intended and agreement formed through honest conversation that wouldn't have happened with Luna present and everything proving that some truths required absence for expression and some processing happened better without person being discussed participating despite relationship suggesting all decisions should be mutual when mutuality sometimes prevented honest communication necessary for actual progress toward sustainable synthesis.
