Chapter 226 Night Ambush

Chapter 226 Night Ambush
POV: Luna
The full moon rose three nights later, painting Silverwood in silver light. Beautiful. Dangerous. Significant.
Full moons amplified everything. Wolf instincts. Magical power. Emotional intensity. Conflicts. Connections. Transformations.
I felt it building throughout the day. The tension. The anticipation. The certainty that something significant would happen tonight. The question wasn't if we'd be attacked. It was when and how severely.
"Everyone's on edge," Nova observed during dinner. "You can feel it. The whole campus holding its breath."
"Because they know," Aria said. "Full moon. Artifact activation. Cole's shadow growing stronger. Perfect conditions for attack. We're all just waiting for it to begin."
"Then we don't wait," I decided. "We patrol. We prepare. We position ourselves strategically. When the attack comes, we're ready. Not caught off guard."
My pack mobilized immediately. Liam coordinated defensive positions. Caleb analyzed likely attack vectors. Selene reinforced critical wards. Everyone contributing their specific expertise to unified defense.
By nightfall, we were as ready as we'd ever be. Students secured in dormitories. Faculty positioned at key locations. Strike team on standby. Defenses maximized.
Then the full moon reached its peak. And they attacked.
Rogue wolves from the north. Shadow Sisters from the south. Coordinated. Simultaneous. Overwhelming.
"Defensive positions!" I shouted. "Everyone! Now!"
The battle erupted instantly. Brutal. Chaotic. Devastating.
I fought in partial shift, Eclipse power flowing, purifying rogue corruption, destroying dark magic. Beside me, Liam fought in full Alpha form, his strength and protective instincts creating a wall that nothing could penetrate.
Caleb fought with Miguel's exact precision, his movements synchronized with mine in ways that only came from fighting together across lifetimes. Every attack he made created openings I exploited. Every defense I formed protected vulnerabilities he exposed.
Through the mate bond, I felt Liam's awareness of this coordination. Felt his acceptance mixed with pain. Felt his love overriding his jealousy even in the middle of battle.
"Luna!" Selene's voice through the Guardian Bond. "The wards! They're targeting the princess-reinforced sections! Trying to break through!"
"Hold them! Channel everything! We're coming!"
Liam, Caleb, and I fought our way toward Selene's position. Found her in hybrid form, channeling royal magic with devastating effectiveness. Around her, Shadow Sisters attacked relentlessly, trying to break her concentration, disrupt her power, create the breach they needed.
"Protect the princess!" I ordered.
My pack converged. Creating a defensive perimeter around Selene. Letting her focus purely on magical defense while we handled physical threats.
The Shadow Sisters were powerful. Coordinated. Better trained than before. Someone had been teaching them. Upgrading their skills. Preparing them for exactly this kind of assault.
"They've improved," Aria observed, fighting beside me.
"Cole's shadow has been training them. Or the architects sent instructors. Either way, they're more dangerous than before."
We fought desperately. The Shadow Sisters were relentless, their dark magic creating chaos, their physical attacks coordinated with military precision. But we held. Refused to break. Refused to let them through to Selene.
Then I felt it. Through my Eclipse mark. Through the wards. Through everything connecting me to Silverwood's magical infrastructure.
The artifact fragment. The one we'd disrupted. It was activating anyway. Cole's shadow had found a way around Caleb's interference. Had rebuilt the network. Had restored the communication.
And now all the fragments were pulsing together. Synchronized. Building toward something massive.
"The artifacts!" I gasped. "They're activating! All of them! At once!"
"When?" Liam demanded.
"Minutes. Maybe seconds. We need to—"
The explosion cut me off. Not physical. Magical. Pure otherworld energy erupting from every artifact fragment simultaneously.
The shockwave hit like a tidal wave. Knocking everyone down. Disrupting magic. Shattering concentration. Creating chaos.
In that moment of vulnerability, one rogue wolf broke through our lines. Headed straight for the nearest artifact fragment. Touched it deliberately. Absorbed its energy.
The transformation was immediate and horrifying. The rogue's body swelled with otherworld power. Its strength multiplied. Its magic amplified beyond natural limits. It became something more than wolf. Something less than natural. Something terrible and powerful and completely under Cole's shadow's control.
"Enhanced rogue!" Caleb shouted. "Artifact-empowered! We need to take it down before others follow!"
But more rogues were already moving. Heading for other fragments. Seeking the same enhancement. The same terrible power.
"Stop them!" I ordered. "Don't let them reach the artifacts!"
We fought with renewed desperation. Every rogue that reached a fragment became exponentially more dangerous. We couldn't let that happen. Couldn't allow Cole's forces to be amplified by artifact power.
I channeled Eclipse energy. Massive amounts. More than I'd ever used before. Purifying. Destroying. Protecting.
The enhanced rogue came at me directly. Fast. Powerful. Overwhelming.
Liam intercepted. Took the hit meant for me. Went down hard.
"Liam!" I screamed.
Through the mate bond, I felt his pain. His determination. His refusal to stay down.
He stood. Shaky but functional. "I'm okay. Focus on the rogue. I've got your back."
Caleb appeared on my other side. "Together. Like always. Like we were meant to."
The three of us attacked as one unit. Liam's strength. My Eclipse power. Caleb's precision. Combined. Devastating. Unstoppable.
We destroyed the enhanced rogue. Prevented others from reaching artifacts. Held the line.
But the damage was done. The artifact's energy was loose. Wild. Uncontrolled. Spreading across Silverwood like infection.
Students were getting sick. Faculty were struggling. Even the wards were destabilizing, unable to process the contamination.
"We need to contain this!" Sienna shouted. "Before the whole academy is poisoned!"
"How?" I demanded.
"I don't know! Artifact contamination at this scale. It's unprecedented. Theoretical. No documented solution!"
Through the chaos, through the battle, through the overwhelming threat, I felt something else. Something familiar. Something terrible.
Cole's shadow. Not just influencing. Not just coordinating. Manifesting. Taking partial form. Using the artifact energy as anchor. As substance. As means of materialization.
He was coming. Not fully. Not yet. But closer. More real. More dangerous.
And we had no idea how to stop him.
