Chapter 210 Rogue Faction Spotted
POV: Luna
Two days later, patrol detected them.
Rogue wolves. Multiple signatures. Gathering near Silverwood's eastern border.
Not attacking. Just watching. Waiting. Planning.
"We need to scout," I told the Headmaster. "Figure out what they want. How many. How dangerous."
"Agreed. But carefully. These aren't random rogues. They're organized. Coordinated. Potentially connected to the architects."
I assembled a team. Liam. Caleb. Aria. Sienna. Lyric. Nova.
Small enough to be stealthy. Large enough to handle threats.
We headed out at dusk. Using twilight as cover.
Found them two miles from campus. At least twenty rogues. Camp established. Organized. Military-style.
"They're not planning a random attack," Liam observed. "This is strategic. Long-term positioning."
"For what purpose?" I asked.
"Siege? Infiltration? Intelligence gathering? Could be anything."
We circled the camp. Staying hidden. Observing. Analyzing.
Sienna performed magical scans. "Strange energy patterns. Dark magic. But also something else. Familiar."
"Familiar how?"
"Like Cole's signature. His style. His techniques. But not quite him. Like someone copying. Or continuing his work."
"The architects. Still active. Still recruiting. Still planning."
"Exactly."
Caleb was scanning too. Using his own magical senses. "There. The tent on the north side. That's their command center. Whoever's leading this operation is there."
"How do you know?"
"Energy concentration. Magical density. Authority emanation. Leaders radiate power. That's the source."
"Should we investigate?" Aria asked.
"Too dangerous. If we're caught, we're outnumbered. Outpositioned. Dead."
"But if we don't investigate, we don't learn anything valuable."
She had a point.
"Caleb and I will go," I decided. "We're strongest magically. Best chance of escaping if caught. Everyone else, stay here. If we're not back in ten minutes, retreat. Report to the Headmaster."
"Luna—" Liam protested.
"I need you here. Coordinating. If we're caught, you lead the retreat. Get everyone safe. Warn Silverwood."
Through the mate bond, I felt his resistance. His fear. His desire to protect me.
"Trust me," I said.
"Always. Just come back."
"I will."
Caleb and I approached the command tent. Silently. Carefully. Using magic to mask our presence.
Got close enough to hear voices. Multiple wolves. Discussing. Planning.
"The architects want her alive," one said. "The Eclipse wolf. She's key to the next phase."
"What about the others? The pack? The princess?"
"Expendable. Kill them. Capture her. Deliver her to the architects. That's our mission."
"When?"
"Soon. Within days. We're waiting for the signal. The final piece. Then we attack."
"What's the final piece?"
"The artifact fragment. The one Cole hid before capture. Once we retrieve it, we have everything needed for the ritual. Everything needed to break the seal. Everything needed to reshape reality."
My blood ran cold. Cole had hidden an artifact fragment? Before his capture? And the architects were close to finding it?
"We need to leave," I whispered to Caleb. "Now. Warn the Headmaster. Find that fragment first."
We retreated. Carefully. Silently.
Almost made it clear when a twig snapped. Under Caleb's foot.
The rogues heard. Immediately alert. "Intruders!"
"Run!" I said.
We ran. Fast. Using magic to enhance speed. To create distractions. To cover our escape.
The rogues pursued. Organized. Coordinated. Dangerous.
Caleb fought beside me. Not behind. Not protecting. Beside. Equal. Coordinated.
His combat instincts were incredible. Uncanny. Perfect.
He anticipated rogue movements before they happened. Countered attacks before they landed. Created openings I exploited instantly.
"How do you know their patterns?" I asked while fighting.
"Training. Experience. Instinct. I've fought rogues before. Many times. I know how they move. Think. React."
But it was more than that. More than training.
It was like he'd fought beside me before. Knew my style. Anticipated my moves. Complemented my techniques perfectly.
Like Miguel used to.
We made it back to our team. The rogues pursuing.
"Defensive formation!" Liam ordered.
We formed up. Pack coordination. Perfect synchronization.
Fought together. Held the line. Drove the rogues back.
Eventually, they retreated. Not defeated. Just strategic withdrawal.
"They're not done," Aria observed.
"No. But they're cautious now. Know we're aware. Know we're watching."
We returned to Silverwood. Reported everything. The conversation. The mission. The artifact fragment.
"We need to find that fragment," the Headmaster said. "Before they do. Any ideas where Cole might have hidden it?"
"Somewhere on campus," Sienna said. "He wouldn't have risked hiding it off-site. Too unpredictable. Too vulnerable."
"Then we search. Systematically. Thoroughly. Every location Cole frequented. Every place he had access."
We organized search teams. Started immediately.
But Silverwood was massive. Hundreds of potential hiding spots. Limited time.
"We'll never find it before they do," Lyric said.
"We have to try."
That night, I returned to the rogue camp location. Found something we'd missed.
A sigil. Carved into a tree. Pulsing with dark magic.
Cole's signature. Definitely his work.
But also something else. A message. Encoded. Hidden.
"What is it?" Caleb asked, appearing beside me.
"A clue. Maybe. Cole left this. Recently. It's connected to the fragment. I can feel it."
"Can you decode it?"
"Maybe. With help."
We took rubbings. Photographs. Samples.
Brought them back to Sienna. She analyzed. Studied. Decoded.
"It's a location marker," she said. "Pointing to something specific. On campus. Somewhere significant."
"Where?"
She calculated. Cross-referenced. Analyzed.
"The old chapel. Where we found the convergence sigil. That's where Cole hid the artifact fragment."
We'd already searched the chapel. Multiple times. Found nothing.
"He must have hidden it better than we thought," I said. "Magically concealed. Warded. Protected."
"Then we search again. More carefully. More thoroughly. Until we find it."
Before we could leave, alarms sounded.
"Breach!" Security reported. "Eastern perimeter! Multiple hostiles! Rogue attack!"
The rogues were attacking. Now. While we were distracted. While we were searching.
"Defensive positions!" the Headmaster ordered.
We mobilized. Ready to fight. Ready to defend.
The war had officially begun.
