Chapter 206 Boys' Night Tension
POV: Liam
I needed to talk. To vent. To process.
Luna's reaction to Caleb. The wolf instinct flare. The certainty in her eyes.
Something was happening. Something I didn't understand. Something that threatened everything.
I gathered the guys. Informal. Casual. Just friends talking.
Aiden Cross showed up. My mate's second mate bond. This was already complicated without him.
But he understood. Better than anyone. What it felt like to watch Luna be pulled toward someone else.
Marcus came too. The senior who'd helped us before. Smart. Researched. Knowledgeable.
And Darius Kane. Alpha's son. He'd been watching Luna for years. Never acted on it. But the interest was there.
We sat in the common room. Late night. Private. Just us.
"Okay," I said. "We need to talk about Caleb Webber."
"The mysterious transfer?" Marcus asked.
"The one Luna can't stop thinking about," Aiden added. Bitter but understanding.
"He's suspicious," Darius said. "Too skilled. Too knowledgeable. Too perfectly timed."
"Exactly. And Luna's drawn to him. Like magnetically. Unavoidably. It's driving me crazy."
"Mate bond jealousy?" Marcus asked.
"More than that. It's watching her be confused. Conflicted. Pulled toward someone she doesn't even know. And being helpless to stop it."
Through my bond with Luna, I'd felt everything. The recognition. The certainty. The impossible familiarity.
"Could he be another mate bond?" Aiden asked. "Like me? Another fated connection?"
"Maybe. But it feels different. Luna says it's deeper. More primal. Soul-level instead of just fated mates."
"That's concerning."
"That's terrifying."
We sat in silence. Processing. Worrying.
"Mate bonds don't just disappear because someone new shows up," Marcus said. "You're still her mate. That's permanent. Unbreakable."
"But what if there's something more going on? Something beyond mate bonds? Something none of us understand?"
"Like what?" Darius asked.
"I don't know. But Caleb knows. He's hiding something. Something about who he is. Why he's here. What he wants with Luna."
Across the room, I saw him. Caleb. Sitting alone. Reading. But watching. Always watching.
"He's always there," Aiden observed. "Watching. Listening. Aware. Makes everyone uneasy."
"You feel it too?"
"Everyone feels it. He's not normal. Not just skilled or powerful. Different. Wrong. Right. Confusing."
Marcus pulled out his laptop. "I've been researching. Old texts. Ancient wolf lore. Trying to understand what could cause this kind of recognition. This soul-level certainty."
"Find anything?"
"Maybe. There are stories. Legends. About reincarnated wolves. Souls that return. In different bodies. Different forms. But carrying memories. Connections. Bonds from previous lives."
"That's impossible."
"Is it? We shift into wolves. Use magic. Fight otherworld creatures. What's impossible anymore?"
"Reincarnation is different. There's no proof. No evidence."
"There are stories. Documented cases. Wolves recognizing mates from previous lives. Souls finding each other across lifetimes."
"And you think Caleb is what? Luna's reincarnated ex-boyfriend? That's crazy."
"I'm just saying it's possible. That the legends exist. That there's precedent."
We all looked at Caleb. He was still watching. Like he knew we were discussing him.
"Even if it's true," I said. "Even if Caleb is someone Luna knew before. I'm her mate now. Her choice. Her bond. That doesn't change."
"Doesn't it?" Aiden asked quietly. "If he's someone she loved. Someone she lost. Someone returned. How do you compete with that?"
"I don't compete. I just love her. Support her. Be there for her. That's all I can do."
"That's all any of us can do," Darius added. "Luna's going to choose who she chooses. We just have to accept that."
"You're interested in her too?" I asked.
"I've been interested for years. Since first year. But she never looked at me that way. Chose Miguel. Then you. Now possibly Caleb. I'm used to being overlooked."
"That's depressing."
"That's reality."
Then Caleb stood. Walked toward our table. Deliberate. Purposeful.
"Here we go," Marcus muttered.
Caleb reached us. Looked at each of us. Assessing. Understanding.
"I know what you're discussing," he said. "And you're not wrong to be concerned."
"Excuse me?" I said.
"You're worried about Luna. About my connection to her. About what I represent. Those concerns are valid. Justified. Understandable."
"Then explain. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want with Luna?"
"I can't. Not yet. The timing isn't right. The revelation would cause more harm than good right now."
"That's not good enough."
"It has to be. For now. But I can promise you this. I'm not here to hurt Luna. Not here to steal her. Not here to destroy what you've built. I'm here to protect her. Help her. Stand beside her when she needs it most."
"Why should we believe you?"
"Because Luna's wolf already does. Her instincts trust me. Even when her mind doesn't. That should tell you something."
"It tells us you're manipulating her somehow. Using magic or tricks or something to make her trust you."
"I'm not manipulating anyone. I'm just existing. Being present. Waiting for the right moment to reveal the truth."
"What truth?" Aiden demanded.
"The truth about who I am. Who I was. Who I'll always be. To Luna. For Luna. With Luna."
"You're talking in riddles."
"I'm talking in necessities. Some truths require preparation. Timing. Support. This is one of them."
He turned to leave. Stopped. Looked back at me specifically.
"Liam Castellan. You're Luna's mate. Her choice. Her bond. I'm not here to change that. Not here to replace you. I'm here to be part of something larger. Something Luna will understand soon. When she's ready."
"Part of what?"
"Her destiny. Her purpose. Her future. And yes. Her heart. But not in the way you fear. In a way that complements. That enhances. That completes."
He left. Leaving us more confused than before.
"What the hell was that?" Marcus asked.
"That was Caleb being cryptic. Again. As usual."
"He's hiding something big," Darius said. "Something that changes everything. We need to figure out what before it explodes."
"Agreed. But how?"
"Research. Investigation. Surveillance. We find out who Caleb Webber really is. Where he came from. Why he's really here."
"And if we don't like what we find?"
"Then we protect Luna. From him. From herself. From whatever's coming."
Through my mate bond with Luna, I felt her distress. Her confusion. Her certainty and uncertainty warring.
She was struggling. Suffering. Conflicted.
And I hated it. Hated watching her hurt. Hated being unable to help. Hated Caleb for causing this chaos.
But I also understood. Some things couldn't be rushed. Some truths required timing.
I just hoped. When the truth finally came. When Caleb's identity was revealed.
Luna could handle it. We could handle it. Our bond could survive it.
Because if it couldn't. If this destroyed us.
I didn't know what I'd do.
Luna was everything. My mate. My anchor. My purpose.
Losing her. To anyone. For any reason.
That was unthinkable. Unbearable. Impossible.
So I'd fight. For her. For us. For our bond.
Against Caleb. Against destiny. Against fate itself if necessary.
Because that's what mates did.
They fought. For love. For connection. For each other.
Always.
