Chapter 172 Aftermath of Betrayal
POV: Luna
Sleep didn't come easy that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those photos. Those files. Years of surveillance.
Cole watching me. Documenting me. Studying me like a specimen.
"You're spiraling," Liam said through the mate bond.
"I'm processing."
"You're torturing yourself. There's a difference."
He was right. But I couldn't stop.
Around three a.m., I gave up trying to sleep. Went to the common room.
Found Liam already there. Waiting.
"I knew you'd come here," he said.
"Am I that predictable?"
"Only to me. Through the mate bond. Everyone else thinks you're mysterious and complicated."
Despite everything, I smiled. "I am mysterious and complicated."
"You really aren't. You're just traumatized and stubborn."
"That's not comforting."
"It's honest."
He patted the couch beside him. I sat.
"Talk to me," he said. "Real talk. Not the brave face you show everyone else."
"I'm furious," I admitted. "At Cole. At myself. At everything."
"That's valid."
"He watched me for years. Documented every aspect of my life. And I never noticed. How did I not notice?"
"Because you trusted him. Because manipulation works best on people who want to believe the best in others."
"That makes me weak."
"That makes you human. Or wolf. Whatever. Point is, it makes you normal. Not weak."
"I don't feel normal. I feel stupid."
"You're not stupid. Cole is a trained operative. Part of a century-old conspiracy. He fooled everyone. Not just you."
"But I was closest to him. I should have seen it."
"Why? Because you're Eclipse? Because you're powerful? Luna, having magic doesn't make you omniscient. You're allowed to be fooled. Allowed to be hurt. Allowed to be human."
Through the mate bond, I felt his absolute sincerity.
"I hate him," I whispered. "For what he did. For what he made me doubt. About myself. About my judgment. About everything."
"Good. Hate is healthy. Better than self-blame."
"Is it?"
"Absolutely. Hate is directed outward. At the person who actually did wrong. Self-blame is internal. Toxic. Destructive."
He pulled me close. "Be angry at Cole. Be furious. Hate him with everything you've got. But don't hate yourself. You did nothing wrong."
I wanted to believe him.
Through the mate bond, I felt his love. His certainty. His absolute refusal to let me drown in self-blame.
"Thank you," I said.
"For what?"
"For being here. For not letting me spiral. For being real."
"Always."
We sat together until dawn. Not talking much. Just being present.
It helped. More than I expected.
When morning came, my friends appeared.
"Couldn't sleep either?" Nova asked.
"Nope," I replied.
"Same," Aria said. "Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those files."
"Me too," Sienna added.
We gathered in the common room. Exhausted. Traumatized. Together.
"The Headmaster's analyzing everything we found," I said. "Should have results by this afternoon."
"What do you think he'll find?" Lyric asked.
"Evidence of more conspirators. More architects. More threats we don't know about yet."
"Cheerful."
"Realistic."
"Can we not do realistic right now?" Nova asked. "Can we just do denial? For like an hour?"
"What would denial look like?" Aria asked.
"Pretending we're normal students. With normal problems. Like homework and crushes and drama."
"That sounds nice," Selene said, appearing in the doorway. "Can I join the denial party?"
"Absolutely. Pull up a chair."
We spent the next hour being intentionally normal.
Talking about classes. Complaining about assignments. Gossiping about non-life-threatening drama.
It was wonderful.
Then the Headmaster appeared.
Reality came crashing back.
"I need to see Luna, Liam, and the princess," he said. "My office. Now."
We followed him silently.
In his office, he had the files spread across his desk. Notes. Analysis. Connections drawn between pieces.
"I've found something disturbing," he said.
"More disturbing than obsessive surveillance?" I asked.
"Yes. The surveillance wasn't random. It was targeted. Specific. Cole was looking for something."
"What?"
"A pattern. In your magic. Your Eclipse power. How it manifests. How it grows. How it responds to stress."
"Why would he need that?"
"Because the architects are trying to replicate Eclipse power. Create their own. If they can understand how it works, they can synthesize it."
My blood ran cold. "That's not possible."
"We thought it wasn't. But this research suggests otherwise. If they succeed, they'd have Eclipse-level power without the limitations. Without the bloodline. Without you."
"So I become obsolete. Unnecessary."
"Or more valuable. As the original. The template. The source they keep studying."
"That's worse."
"Yes. It is."
"What do we do?" Liam asked.
"We find Cole. He knows more than anyone about the architects' plans. If we can catch him, we can get answers."
"He's powerless. Alone. How far could he have gotten?"
"That's what concerns me. He should have been found by now. The fact that he hasn't suggests someone's helping him."
"Another conspirator."
"Exactly."
Selene spoke up. "I can help find him. My royal magic is designed for tracking. Especially people connected to me through recent magical exchanges."
"You fought Cole directly," I realized. "Your magic touched his."
"Exactly. I should be able to track his signature. It'll take some time to set up the ritual. But it's doable."
"How long?" the Headmaster asked.
"A few hours. Maybe less if I have help."
"Do it. Luna, Liam, assist her. Find Cole. Bring him back. We need answers."
We went to the ritual room. Private. Warded. Safe.
Selene began drawing symbols on the floor. Complex. Ancient. Royal magic.
"This is fascinating," I said, watching.
"It's painstaking," she corrected. "One wrong line and the whole thing fails."
"Can I help?"
"Hold the diagram steady. Channel your Eclipse power into it when I give the signal. That'll amplify my tracking ability."
We worked for two hours. Drawing. Channeling. Refining.
Finally, Selene said, "Ready. Luna, now."
I channeled Eclipse power through my mark. Into the ritual circle.
It flared to life. Silver and gold light swirling.
An image appeared. Hazy. Shifting. But recognizable.
Cole. Hiding in an abandoned building. About five miles from campus.
"Found him," Selene breathed.
But then the image shifted. Zoomed out.
And I saw who was with him.
Alpha Reed. The Council member. Providing supplies. Giving orders.
"The Council infiltration is deeper than we thought," Liam said.
"We need to tell the Headmaster," I said.
But as we turned to leave, the ritual circle pulsed.
Another magical signature appeared. Powerful. Hidden. Masked.
Someone else was there. With Cole and Alpha Reed.
Someone radiating dark magic. Otherworld energy.
One of the architects. Maybe the architect.
The leader we'd been searching for.
"We have to go now," I said. "Before they move. Before we lose them."
"That's exactly what they'd want," Liam protested. "They're probably setting a trap."
"Maybe. But it's our best lead. Maybe our only lead."
Through the Guardian Bond, I felt Selene's determination. "I'm coming with you."
"No. You're too valuable. If they capture you—"
"Then they capture me. But I'm not hiding anymore. I'm done being protected. I'm a protector now."
She was right. And I had no authority to stop her.
"Fine. We go together. But we go smart. No rushing in. No heroics."
"Agreed," Liam said.
We gathered our pack. Explained the situation.
"We're coming," Nova said immediately.
"All of us," Aria added.
"This could be a trap," I warned.
"Then we spring it together."
We prepared quickly. Weapons. Potions. Strategy.
Then we headed out.
Toward the abandoned building. Toward Cole. Toward answers.
Toward whatever trap was waiting.
Because even if it was a trap, we couldn't turn back.
We'd come too far. Lost too much. Survived too many battles.
This ended. One way or another. Today.
