Chapter 16 First Confrontation
"We need to talk," Darius said.
Luna's hand moved instinctively toward her mark. "About what?"
"About your future here. Or lack thereof." He stepped closer. Not threatening exactly. But imposing. "I'm issuing a formal challenge. Tomorrow. During advanced training. You and me. Hand-to-hand combat. In front of everyone."
"I can refuse."
"You can. But then everyone will know you're scared. That the Eclipse bloodline produces cowards along with unstable wolves."
Luna's temper flared. "I'm not scared of you."
"Then prove it. Accept the challenge. Show everyone you can actually control yourself. That yesterday's video was a fluke." His smile was cold. "Unless it wasn't. Unless you really are as dangerous and unstable as everyone's saying."
"This is about the video? About rumors?"
"This is about pack hierarchy. You don't get to skip ranks just because your last name is Eclipse. You don't get special treatment because you can shift fast. You earn your place here. Through challenges. Through proving yourself. So I'm giving you that chance."
"How generous."
"Tomorrow. Advanced training. Be there. Unless you want everyone to think you're too weak to face me."
He walked away before Luna could respond.
She stood outside her dorm. Hands shaking. Mark burning.
A challenge. A real one. Public. Formal.
If she refused, she'd look weak. Scared. Everything Darius wanted.
If she accepted, she'd have to fight a fourth-year Alpha in front of the entire advanced training class.
Either way, Darius won something.
Luna climbed to her room. Nova was studying but looked up immediately.
"What happened? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Darius challenged me. Formally. Tomorrow during training."
Nova's face went pale. "He can't. You're first year. Challenges are supposed to be between equal ranks."
"Apparently he got faculty approval. Thorne okayed it."
"Why would Thorne approve that? It's not fair. You've been here less than a month."
"Because Thorne wants to see what I can do under pressure. Or because Darius has more influence than we thought. Take your pick."
Luna collapsed onto her bed. Every muscle ached from today's combat class. Tomorrow she'd have to do it again. Against someone much stronger.
"You're going to refuse, right?" Nova asked quietly.
"Can't. If I refuse, I look weak. Everyone will think I'm scared."
"You should be scared. Darius is dangerous. He's been training for years. He knows every dirty trick. And he doesn't fight fair."
"Then I'll have to fight dirty too."
"Luna—"
"I don't have a choice, Nova. This was always coming. Darius was always going to force a confrontation. At least this way it's formal. Controlled. Faculty watching. He can't actually kill me."
"But he can hurt you. Humiliate you. Break bones. And no one will stop him because it's an official challenge."
Luna stared at the ceiling. "Then I'll heal. And I'll learn. And next time I'll be ready."
She didn't sleep that night. Couldn't. Her mind raced with scenarios. Strategies. Ways to survive what was coming.
By morning, she felt hollow. Exhausted. But grimly determined.
Advanced training started at ten. Luna arrived early. The field was already crowded. Word had spread. Students from all years gathered to watch.
This wasn't just training anymore. It was a spectacle.
Ryder found her at the equipment shed. "You don't have to do this."
"Yeah, I do."
"No. You can forfeit. Take the social hit. Rebuild your reputation later."
"And let Darius think he scared me off? No thanks."
"Luna, listen to me. Darius doesn't just want to beat you. He wants to break you. Make an example. Show everyone what happens when first years get too ambitious. If you go out there, he will hurt you."
"I know."
"And you're still doing it?"
"I'm still doing it."
Ryder's expression was unreadable. "Then at least be smart about it. Don't let him provoke you into shifting. Don't lose control. Fight technically. Use your training. And for god's sake, protect your head."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"I'm serious. Darius is brutal in challenges. I've seen him fight. He'll go for painful targets. Ribs. Joints. Anywhere that hurts but doesn't cause permanent damage."
"Noted."
Professor Thorne called everyone to the center field. Students formed a large circle. Luna and Darius stood opposite each other.
Thorne addressed the crowd. "This is a formal challenge. Eclipse versus Kane. Standard rules. No shifting. No claws. No teeth. Fight ends when one party submits or is incapacitated. Any questions?"
"Just one," Darius said loudly. "Does she get padding? Being a first year and all?"
Laughter rippled through the crowd.
Luna's mark heated. "I don't need padding. Let's get this over with."
Thorne stepped back. "Begin."
Darius didn't rush. He circled slowly. Assessing. Looking for weaknesses.
Luna matched his movement. Stayed guarded. Waited for him to make the first move.
"You know you can't win this, right?" Darius said conversationally. "I've been training since I was six. You've been here what, three weeks?"
"Four."
"Four weeks. Against fifteen years. The math doesn't work in your favor."
"Then why do you look worried?"
His smile vanished. He struck. Fast. Hard.
Luna blocked. Barely. The impact jarred her entire arm.
He pressed forward relentlessly. Combinations. Feints. Testing her defenses.
Luna gave ground. Focused on not getting hit. On staying upright.
But Darius was too fast. Too experienced. He landed a hit to her ribs. Pain exploded. She stumbled.
The crowd reacted. Some cheered. Others winced.
"Stay down," Darius said. "Save yourself the embarrassment."
Luna pushed to her feet. "Not a chance."
They engaged again. Luna tried different tactics. Tried to use speed instead of strength. Agility instead of power.
It worked. Slightly. She dodged more hits. Even landed a few of her own.
But not enough. Darius was overwhelming her. Every exchange left her more battered. More exhausted.
Her wolf stirred. Desperate. Protective. Wanting to even the odds.
Luna pushed it down. Maintained control.
Darius swept her legs. She hit the ground hard. Before she could recover, he was on her. Hand at her throat. Not choking. Just holding. Demonstrating dominance.
"Submit."
"No."
"Submit or I make this worse."
Luna's vision blurred. Her mark burned. Her wolf screamed for release.
She made a choice.
Let it out. Just a little. Just enough.
Her eyes flashed gold. Claws extended. Strength surged.
She broke Darius's grip. Threw him off. Rolled to her feet.
The crowd gasped.
Luna was partially shifted. More than she'd intended. Claws. Teeth. Eyes. But still mostly human.
"That's against the rules," someone shouted.
"She's shifting," another voice called.
But Thorne didn't stop the fight. Just watched. Curious.
Darius stood slowly. His expression had changed. No more smirking. No more confidence.
Caution. Maybe even fear.
"You really can't control it," he said.
"I'm controlling it fine. Come on. Let's finish this."
They clashed again. Luna fought differently now. Faster. Stronger. More aggressive.
Darius struggled to keep up. She was pushing him back. Landing hits. Drawing blood.
The crowd murmured. Impressed. Scared. Uncertain.
Luna felt her control slipping. The wolf wanted more. Wanted to fully shift. Wanted to win.
She pulled back. Hard. Forced the shift to reverse. Claws retracted. Eyes returned to normal.
But the damage was done. Everyone had seen it. Seen her partially shift mid-fight.
Darius used the moment of distraction. Struck her hard in the stomach. Luna doubled over. Gasping.
"Time," Thorne called. "That's enough. Challenge ends in draw."
"Draw?" Darius rounded on him. "I had her."
"You had someone who was partially shifted. Which means the fight was no longer fair by the rules. Draw. Both of you, step back."
Luna stumbled to the sidelines. Her ribs screamed. Her stomach cramped. But she was standing.
Students whispered. Pointed. Some looked impressed. Others looked terrified.
"Did you see her eyes?"
"She shifted mid-fight. That's not normal control."
"Eclipse wolves are always unstable. Told you."
"But she shifted back. That takes serious power."
Luna ignored them all. Found Ryder. He handed her water.
"That was reckless."
"That was survival."
"You shifted in front of everyone. Again."
"I shifted and then unshifted. On purpose. That's control."
Ryder's expression softened slightly. "Yeah. It is. Dangerous. Risky. But controlled. You're getting better."
Darius appeared beside them. Close enough for only Luna and Ryder to hear.
"This isn't over, Eclipse. Not by a long shot. You got lucky today. Drew instead of lost. But next time, there won't be a draw. There won't be faculty to stop it. Just you and me. And we'll see how much control you really have."
He walked away. Back to his group. But his threat lingered like smoke.
Luna's mark pulsed. Warning. Promise. Both.
This was just the beginning.
Whatever game Darius was playing, the stakes had just gone up.
And Luna had no idea how to win.
